Azur is a Dutch natural body-care and skincare brand based in Groningen, in the north of the Netherlands. It was founded by Eline, a trained molecular biologist, and grew out of a small artisanal soap-making business before expanding into face oils, balms, body oils, bath salts and scented candles [2]. The company makes its products by hand in its own workshop in Groningen and trades as Azur Natural Bodycare B.V.

The brand takes its name and much of its imagery from the Côte d'Azur, the Mediterranean coastline of south-eastern France. Its positioning rests on three ideas it repeats throughout its own material: fully natural, plant-based formulas; suitability for sensitive skin; and packaging without plastic. Azur is active, with a running webshop in Dutch, German and English and a wholesale programme for independent shops and salons.

## Origin & founders

According to the company's own account, Eline came to cosmetics through science rather than the beauty trade. She was trained as a molecular biologist and describes a long-standing interest in both skin and the environment [2]. The brand says she noticed how many unnecessary chemicals ordinary care products contained, and that almost everything on the shelf came wrapped in plastic, with some cosmetics also containing microplastics. Azur's own telling links this directly to plastic pollution in the oceans.

Her response was to make her own soap, which the company describes as completely different from a supermarket bar. The soaps were at first only for her own use. They soon became popular with family and friends, and Eline decided to start selling them [1]. Independent retailer descriptions give the same picture: Azur began as an artisanal soap works, a *zeepziederij* in Dutch [8].

The Côte d'Azur theme comes from Eline's childhood. The brand recalls how, as a young girl, she was drawn to the deep-purple lavender fields of the region, the blue Mediterranean, the sunflower fields and the traditional French soap-makers known as *savonneries*. A German natural-cosmetics retailer notes that this landscape shapes the brand's scents, colours and product names [6]. Several of Azur's scent lines, such as Lavender Fields and Sunset Dreams, follow that thread.

No founding year is given in any public account of the company, and Eline's surname is not published. All recipes, the company says, are formulated by Eline herself, drawing on her scientific training and years of experience.

The business is based in Groningen. Its website lists the address of Azur Natural Bodycare B.V. as Zeewinde 3-8, while a Dutch wedding-supplier directory gives a different address, Kerklaan 30,, also in Groningen [7]. Both place the company in the same city.

## Philosophy & positioning

Azur describes its products as 100% natural and plant-based. It says scents come only from pure essential oils and that colours are taken from plants or clay. The company's stated aim is for its products, ingredients and packaging to be gentle to both skin and the earth, and it says its formulas are designed to care for even the most sensitive skin.

The brand groups its values under four headings on its website: "100% Natural", "Skinloving", "Sustainable", and "Vegan & Cruelty-Free". In its mission statement, Azur says it wants not only to create responsible cosmetics but also to contribute actively to the conservation and sustainable management of the planet. It frames this partly as a matter of small daily choices, and partly as a shared goal of a plastic-free bathroom.

Another heading on the company's "Our story" page, "Where science and art meet", sums up how Azur presents itself: a scientist's approach to formulation combined with hand-made, small-batch production.

The company sells directly to consumers through its webshop. It also runs a wholesale programme aimed at concept stores, gift shops, clothing boutiques, skin and hair salons, cosmetics shops and larger retail chains. For trade customers it offers retail-ready packaging, seasonal and limited editions, and private-label or white-label production.

## Products & innovation

Soap remains at the centre of the range. Azur sells hand-made bars in a set of named scent collections: Wild Flower, Sunset Dreams, Sauna Feels, Lavender Fields, Spicy Spirit and Morning Muse. Its bestsellers include the Wild Flower natural soap bar and the Sauna Feels scrub soap. It also makes facial cleansing bars, including one intended for very sensitive skin, and sells a plastic-free soap bag.

Over time the company has added leave-on skincare. The Body Oil Wild Flower is described by the brand as a body oil without unnecessary additives, built on squalane and apricot kernel oil. The Face Oil Blueberry & Squalane and the Balm Beauté, a multi-purpose balm, complete the core face and body offer. Lip balms, hair-care products and magnesium bath salts round out the care categories.

A Dutch beauty blog reviewed the face oil and the balm [5]. Its writer, described as a cosmetics advisor, listed the face oil's ingredients as squalane, rosehip seed oil, jojoba oil, bilberry seed oil, sunflower seed oil, pineapple fruit extract and vitamin E (tocopherol). The review noted that the oil contains no preservatives or added fragrance and should be used within twelve months of opening. The balm's ingredients were given as sea buckthorn oil, candelilla wax, mango butter, olive-derived squalane and strawberry seed oil. The reviewer praised both products for their short ingredient lists.

Beyond skincare, Azur makes scented candles from soy wax and essential oils, which it says are free of paraffin and synthetic fragrance. It also sells facial tools such as a konjac sponge and a white-jade gua sha stone, gift sets, and personalised soaps. Soaps with stamped initials or custom labels are offered as wedding favours and corporate gifts.

## Sustainability

Azur makes broad environmental claims about its whole range. The company states that all its products are fully biodegradable, plastic-free, palm-oil-free, vegan, sustainably packaged and produced locally in the Netherlands. It says it never uses animal-derived ingredients and tests its products only on the team itself.

On certification, Azur states that it is certified cruelty-free by PETA [2]. Its homepage also describes the range as "certified vegan", though it does not name the certifying body. For its wholesale customers, the company says its production follows ISO 22716, the international good manufacturing practice standard for cosmetics [4].

## Current status

Azur is an active business. Its webshop was operating in 2026, with customer reviews dated May 2026 displayed on its homepage [1]. The site is available in Dutch, German and English, and the company's wholesale page offers shipping within the European Union. Its products are carried by natural-cosmetics retailers outside the Netherlands as well as by independent shops at home [6].
