The range grew out of a 1988 collaboration between pharmacist Dietmar Wolz and midwife Ingeborg Stadelmann, whose first product was a perineal massage oil for pregnant women. Their Original-Stadelmann® aroma blends, oils and balms built on plant and essential oils, have since grown to more than 300 products and remain the core of the brand. The range is made by hand in the pharmacy's own workshop in Kempten and is sold mainly through pharmacies. In 2026 it widened from aromatherapy-based care into two specialised skincare lines: one for atopic skin and one for skin under strain during cancer treatment. The pharmacy itself has grown into a company of around 400 staff, and in 2025 it won the pharmacy category of the Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis, the German Sustainability Award. ## Origin & founders The company tells its own story as beginning in 1985, when Dietmar Wolz, then 26, took over an existing pharmacy in an old building in Kempten's town centre. As a pharmacy student he had been drawn to complementary medicine, attending courses on homeopathy and herbal medicine, and he wanted to make his own preparations without technical additives. The pharmacy's own founding year, before Wolz took it over, is not stated. The product range dates from three years later. In 1988 Wolz, then an expectant father, met the midwife Ingeborg Stadelmann. According to the company, he wanted to make care products without paraffin for his child, while she wanted to support women through pregnancy and birth with teas and homeopathic remedies, and had begun using plant oils blended with essential oils in her midwifery work. That same year the two mixed their first blend, a perineal massage oil (Dammmassageöl) made without added preservatives or artificial stabilisers. The company calls this the birth of the Original-Stadelmann® aroma blends. The two starting points therefore mark different things: 1985 is when Wolz took over the pharmacy, and 1988 is when the own-label range began [2]. This article follows 1988 as the brand's founding year, the date also given on Stadelmann's own website [10]. The company says that at the time the founders never imagined the blends would become a classic of aroma care. More products followed for each stage of life, from birth to care in old age. ## History & milestones The first product was soon joined by a birth oil, a breastfeeding oil, a first baby oil and a nappy balm, the Windelbalsam. Step by step, the founders and the pharmacy team widened the range to more than 300 blends. In 2018 the trade paper Deutsche Apotheker Zeitung marked three decades of the Original-Stadelmann® aroma blends from the Kempten pharmacy [11]. Alongside the product range, the pharmacy grew into a small group of related businesses. In 2001 a natural-food shop, PurNatur, opened under the pharmacy's roof, an idea that began with organic lunches served to staff. In 2005 the company and its partners opened a scent and medicinal plant garden on the Burghalde, a historic hill site in Kempten, where many of the plants used in the aroma and tea blends can be seen growing. A second pharmacy followed in 2010, next to Kempten's hospital. In 2013 the company opened a natural cosmetics studio, started by an employee with extra training as a beautician, and a childcare centre for staff and local families. PurNatur moved to premises of more than 800 square metres opposite the pharmacy in 2015, and a PurNatur flower shop took over the old space. In 2016 the Deutsche Apotheker Zeitung ran a report on the company under the headline "Eine Brücke für das Unternehmen Apotheke" ("A bridge for the pharmacy business") [12]. The pharmacy also runs an academy for training and courses. Today the company describes the Bahnhof-Apotheke, with its hospital branch, as the heart of a business that also includes the cosmetics studio, the childcare centre, the academy, the plant garden, and the PurNatur food and flower shops. ## Ownership The brand is owned and made by the Bahnhof-Apotheke, which is run by Apotheker A. & D. Wolz OHG, a general partnership registered at the local court in Kempten [3]. The partners are the pharmacists Dietmar Wolz and his son Alexander Wolz, who, according to the company, now shares responsibility for the business with his father [2]. It is an independent family business rather than part of a larger group. No acquisitions or changes of ownership are recorded. ## Philosophy & positioning The company sums up its approach in the motto "Bewusst pflegen, bewusst leben" ("care consciously, live consciously"). Its stated aim is natural skin care free of added preservatives and artificial stabilisers. The company says it uses only undiluted essential oils and cold-pressed, unrefined plant oils as carriers, and that more than 80 percent of the plant ingredients in the aroma blends are organic. An unusual feature is that the brand deliberately does without natural-cosmetics certification. The company explains that most such certificates still permit certain synthetic preservatives, while its own recipes avoid added preservatives entirely. Doing so, it argues, keeps the products gentler on the skin, even at the cost of a shorter shelf life [6]. Handwork is one of four values the company names, alongside enjoyment of work, quality and sustainability. Many products, including the Original-Stadelmann® blends, are filled, labelled and packed by hand in small batches. The company links this to its environmental aims, saying manual filling lets it avoid the industrial cleaning agents that machine lines would need. Distribution centres on pharmacies. Besides its own two pharmacies and online shop, the company supplies other pharmacies and retailers. It says that around two thirds of all pharmacies in Germany either stock the brand or have ordered it for customers [2]. ## Products & innovation **Original-Stadelmann® aroma blends.** The founding line covers oils and balms for pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding and babies, including the Dammmassageöl, birth and breastfeeding oils, baby oil and the Windelbalsam. Later additions extend to care for older and ill people, products for the cold season, intimate care, sport, and products for children and teenagers. The only non-vegan raw materials the company lists in these blends are organic wool wax (lanolin) and beeswax from organic Bioland beekeepers. **Dermatologische Naturkosmetik (Derma).** This line is aimed at sensitive skin with a weakened barrier, including people with atopic dermatitis (eczema), and was presented in a company news post in March 2026. Its key ingredient is betulin, a plant substance taken from birch bark. The range includes Derma Betulin Creme Pur for face and body, a body oil, an ointment for very dry and reddened skin, and a mild shower wash. The company describes the line as fragrance-free and dermatologically tested. As of March 2026, it had announced an eyelid cream and a hydrolipid lotion for summer 2026 [5]. **Onkologische Naturkosmetik (Onko).** Promoted on the company's homepage as a new care line, this range was developed for skin under strain during chemotherapy, radiotherapy or immunotherapy. Products include the Onko Strahlen Gel, a protective gel for preparing skin before radiation or chemotherapy, a betulin gel, a soothing spray, a gel for skin changes during immunotherapy, a body cream and a shower gel. According to the company, the line leaves out harsh preservatives, organic UV filters, strong emulsifiers, mineral oils, fruit acids and vitamins A and C [7]. The company's manufacturing overview labels this line "for atopics", a description that matches the dermatology line; the line's own page describes it as care for skin during cancer therapy [4]. Both specialised lines were developed with Dr. David Hauck, whom the company describes as a skin-care expert and a pioneer of certified natural cosmetics. **Quality testing.** Production of the aroma blends takes place in a clean room, under conditions the company compares to those for pharmacy-made medicines. It says every essential and plant oil is first checked in its own analysis and microbiology labs, using methods such as capillary gas chromatography to identify each molecule present. The products are also notified under the EU Cosmetics Regulation. Outside cosmetics, the pharmacy's workshop also makes teas, homeopathic remedies, traditional compresses, Chinese herbal preparations and food supplements. ## Sustainability Sustainability runs through the company's history. In 1992 Dietmar Wolz became a founding member of Forum Essenzia, a network promoting pure essential oils. In 2008 the company was a founding member of the FairWild foundation, which sets environmental and social standards for plants collected from the wild, and joined the dwp fair-trade cooperative [8]. In 2016 it began measuring its greenhouse-gas emissions, working with a regional energy and environment centre. According to the company, its electricity comes entirely from regional hydropower, local deliveries go by bicycle or electric car, and parcels ship through DHL's GoGreen service. The products come in brown glass where possible, which can be recycled with household glass, and the company skips outer cartons and package inserts where the law allows. Dietmar Wolz frames the goal as using plant raw materials carefully so that they remain available for future generations. ## Recognition In 2025 the company won the Deutscher Nachhaltigkeitspreis in the pharmacy category, a result reported in the German pharmacy press [13]. Locally, it says it was named sector winner in the Kemptener Kundenspiegel customer survey for the tenth year in a row in 2025. ## Current status Bahnhof Apotheke is active. In 2026 the company presented its dermatology line, promoted its oncology line as new, and announced further Derma products. In June 2026 it said it was considering a new timber-hybrid building on the Heussring in Kempten, and in early September 2026 it published a statement on its Windelbalsam [9].
