Cutimed is a medical wound-care brand owned by Essity, the Swedish hygiene and health company [2]. Its range centres on dressings for chronic and non-healing wounds, from bacteria-binding contact layers and superabsorbent pads to silicone foams and collagen dressings. A small skin-care line, built around a protective cream and a urea cream foam, sits alongside the dressings and is the brand's main point of contact with everyday skin care.

The brand joined the group through the acquisition of BSN medical, a specialist in compression therapy, wound care and orthopaedics, which SCA announced in December 2016 [10]. It is run from Hamburg, Germany, through BSN medical GmbH, and its best-known technology, Sorbact, traces back to a company in Gothenburg, Sweden, that Essity bought outright in 2021 [11]. Cutimed remains active and is sold under its own name through country websites on several continents.

## History & milestones

The early history of Cutimed is not well documented. Neither the brand's websites nor its parent company give a launch year, a founding story or the names of the people behind the first products. What is on record begins with the brand's place inside a larger medical company.

In December 2016, SCA announced that it would acquire BSN medical, a company active in compression therapy, wound care and orthopaedics. The purchase price was €2,740 million, and the brands that changed hands included Jobst, Leukoplast, Cutimed, Delta Cast and Actimove [10]. Essity, whose founding date is given as 15 June 2017, now lists Cutimed and Leukoplast among its brands.

The second turning point concerned the technology rather than the brand name. In February 2020 Essity bought 75 percent of ABIGO Medical AB, a medical-solutions company based in Gothenburg with about 170 employees. ABIGO developed and marketed Sorbact, which Essity's announcement describes as a clinically established technology for advanced wound care. In July 2021 Essity completed the purchase of the remaining 25 percent, making ABIGO a wholly owned subsidiary; as part of that deal, ABIGO's pharmaceutical business was sold to its founder, Jan G. Smith [11]. The Essity announcement does not mention Cutimed by name. The link between the two comes from Cutimed's own material, which presents Sorbact as one of its two core technologies and sells it under the Cutimed Sorbact name [3].

Cutimed's evidence page gives a sense of how long these products have been in clinical use. It lists published studies from 2006 to 2022, and one 2022 paper in the list describes fifteen years of experience with the coating behind Sorbact.

## Ownership

Cutimed is a brand of Essity. The parent company is headquartered in Stockholm and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. According to Cutimed's German site, Essity employs about 36,000 people, sells its products in roughly 150 countries and had revenue of about 13 billion euros in 2025. Within the group, Cutimed sits beside TENA and Demak'Up, and it shares its BSN medical background with Leukoplast, Jobst, Delta Cast and Actimove.

Where Cutimed "comes from" can be read in two ways. The German site gives the brand's address as BSN medical GmbH at Schützenstraße in Hamburg [1], and the same company appears as the labeler on Cutimed device records in the United States' public medical-device database [12]. On that reading, Cutimed is a German brand. The same German site also stresses that Essity is based in Stockholm [2], and the Sorbact technology was developed in Gothenburg. On that reading, the brand has Swedish roots. Both statements are accurate; they describe different levels of the company. This article treats Germany as the brand's operating base and Sweden as the home of its parent and of its Sorbact technology.

## Philosophy & positioning

Cutimed presents itself first and foremost as a specialist brand. In its own words, its products were developed specifically for the treatment of chronic and non-healing wounds, and the range is organised to cover each phase of wound healing. Its tagline is "Healing for every body"; the Swedish country site carries the title "Your Power to Heal" and describes the line as one that combines advanced technology with ease of use.

The brand frames much of its message around infection. The German "about" page describes the Sorbact approach as safe and effective management of wound infections without the risk of antimicrobial resistance. Rather than stressing agents that kill bacteria, Cutimed emphasises dressings that bind microbes and carry them away when the dressing is changed.

A broader goal statement on the same page, worded at the level of the parent company, speaks of overcoming barriers to the well-being of consumers and patients.

The German site is aimed largely at healthcare professionals. It offers free samples, guidance on reimbursement for Cutimed Sorbact, treatment guides for conditions such as diabetic foot ulcers, pressure ulcers and venous leg ulcers, and a smartphone tool called the Cutimed Wound Navigator. Training is a further part of the offer. Through an Essity-run online campus, the brand runs courses and webinars and says it regularly holds recertification courses for the ICW wound-care qualification, either online or in person [8].

## Products & innovation

The Cutimed range is arranged by clinical task rather than by product type.

- **Cleansing and debridement:** Cutimed Gel, a hydrogel used to clean wounds and loosen dead tissue.
- **Managing infection:** Cutimed Sorbact dressings in several formats, including Siltec Sorbact foam, Sorbion Sorbact superabsorbent pads and Sorbact Hydroactive B hydrogel dressings.
- **Managing fluid (exudate):** the Siltec silicone foam family, which includes heel-shaped versions, Sorbion superabsorbent dressings such as Sachet, Sana, Border and Carbon, and Gelling Fiber, Alginate and Hydro dressings.
- **Supporting tissue growth:** Cutimed Epiona, a collagen dressing.
- **Complementary products:** contact layers such as Cuticell Contact and Sorbion Plus, ointment-impregnated gauze sold as Cuticell, and the skin-care lines PROTECT and ACUTE.

### Sorbact

Sorbact is the technology most closely tied to the Cutimed name. The dressings carry a coating called DACC, short for dialkylcarbamoyl chloride, which makes the surface water-repellent. According to Cutimed, bacteria, fungi and the toxins they release bind irreversibly to this surface and are removed with the dressing [3]. The company says the approach reduces the number of germs in a wound. It cites a 2015 study for its statement that the coating binds large numbers of bacteria within 30 seconds. Based on laboratory data, it also says that no toxins are released from the bound bacteria. Because the dressing works by physically holding microbes rather than by chemical action, the brand states that no bacterial or fungal resistance is to be expected.

### Sorbion

Sorbion is Cutimed's second named technology and is offered only in Cutimed Sorbion dressings. The brand says it was previously known as Hydration Response Technology, or HRT [4]. The dressings use superabsorbent polymers that take up wound fluid and turn into a soft gel with a moist outer layer. A matrix of cellulose fibres and gel-forming polymers is meant to keep the wound moist while drawing excess fluid away. Cutimed says this design helps avoid softening of the surrounding skin and removes inflammatory factors such as bacteria and certain enzymes. An expanding edge lets the pad swell evenly so that it stays flat against the wound. Cutimed states that the dressings retain fluid and bacteria well even under compression bandaging, citing a 53-patient clinical evaluation from 2009 and a 2013 laboratory study.

### Skin care

The skin-care products are a small part of the catalogue but the ones closest to everyday personal care. Cutimed PROTECT comes as a cream, described as medical skin protection for large areas of at-risk skin, and as a spray for the skin around a wound. Cutimed ACUTE is a urea cream foam in two strengths, 5 and 10 percent. The brand's category page says these products help restore the skin's moisture balance and shield it from damage and irritation caused by body fluids, including digestive and wound fluids [6].

### Clinical evidence

Cutimed states that its range has been shown to improve wound management, and it backs the claim with a list of published studies on its website [5]. Most concern Sorbact and appeared in titles such as the Journal of Wound Care, Wounds UK and the British Journal of Nursing. Smaller groups of papers cover Siltec, Sorbion, Epiona and Cuticell Contact. Among them is a 2015 report on 150 patient experiences with a soft silicone foam dressing and a 2018 evaluation of a new absorbent silicone foam in 20 patients. The list is a selection chosen by the brand rather than an independent review.

## Current status

Cutimed is active and continues to trade under its own name inside Essity rather than being folded into another brand. Its German site carries a current product range, an evidence library and an ongoing training programme. The brand's country selector links to 16 national Cutimed sites in Europe, Africa, Australia and the Americas, including the United Kingdom, the United States, South Africa, Australia, Chile and Mexico. No founding year, awards or controversies are documented for the brand.
