Fisiocrem is a Spanish range of topical products for muscles and joints, built on plant extracts such as arnica and St John's wort. It began as a small business in the Osona district of Catalonia, started in 2003 by the New Zealand-born entrepreneur Paul Jeffrey [9]. The cream was first sold to physiotherapists, which gave the brand its name, and later moved into pharmacies.

The brand has been owned by the Barcelona pharmaceutical group Uriach since 2015, when Uriach bought the rights to sell it in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin America [9]. It continues as an active brand within Uriach's consumer health business, and a new product, Fisiocrem Gel Forte, was launched with an international advertising campaign in November 2025 [13].

## Origin & founders

The story of Fisiocrem starts in New Zealand. According to a 2012 profile in the Catalan regional newspaper El 9 Nou, Paul Jeffrey had created an anti-inflammatory formula about 25 years earlier, and it had sold well in New Zealand as an ointment in a pot [10]. After he moved to Catalonia, he reworked the formula and turned it into a cream in a tube.

Jeffrey arrived in Osona in 2003 and began producing the cream at the Molí de la Calvaria, an old mill in the village of Calldetenes. The early customers were physiotherapists, and that is where the product's name comes from. The company behind the product traded as Casa Pronat, SL.

The founding date is not stated the same way everywhere. Catalan press dates the business to Jeffrey's arrival in Osona in 2003, and the 2012 profile likewise says the company was born nine years earlier [10]. A separate Fisiocrem-branded company in Australia, Pronat Group Australia Pty Ltd, says it has been active since 2009 [15]. That later date describes the start of the Australian operation rather than the brand's beginnings in Spain, and Uriach's own websites give no founding year.

## History & milestones

For its first years Fisiocrem was sold mainly through physiotherapy practices. The move into pharmacies came in 2011, and it changed the shape of the business. Trade press later reported that the product had grown by an average of 75 percent a year after reaching pharmacy shelves [11].

By the end of 2012 the company had outgrown the mill. Casa Pronat moved to a 400-square-metre unit on the La Quintana industrial estate in Sant Julià de Vilatorta, a site chosen, the newspaper noted, to feel similar in character to the old mill, with a wood-lined interior. The new base held management, the sales team and the packing and shipping warehouse; raw materials and manufacturing came from elsewhere.

At that time the company had a turnover of about 1.5 million euros and eight employees in Sant Julià. It sold mainly in Spain and Portugal. Fanny Swierczek, a manager at the firm, told El 9 Nou that pharmacy sales were the fastest-growing channel, while sales to physiotherapists had fallen during the economic crisis. Exports to England began in 2013, and in December 2012 the company named France and Germany as planned new markets.

Growth in Spain continued. Sales in the Spanish market reached 6.7 million euros in 2014, according to both El 9 Nou and the pharmacy trade title IM Farmacias [12].

## Ownership

In May 2015 Uriach, a pharmaceutical group based in the Barcelona area, closed the purchase of the Fisiocrem brand [11]. The deal gave Uriach the right to sell the cream in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin America, as reported by El 9 Nou, El Farmacéutico and IM Farmacias. The Spanish-language Wikipedia article on Grupo Uriach describes the territories slightly differently, as Spain, Latin America and Italy, without Portugal [8].

The seller appears under two names in the coverage. El 9 Nou's report names the company as Casa Pronat, SL of Sant Julià de Vilatorta, while its headline and the two trade titles call it FC Resources. The precise legal link between the two names is not explained in those reports. According to El 9 Nou, the original company planned to keep selling Fisiocrem in other countries, such as the United Kingdom and Australia, from its base in Sant Julià.

El Farmacéutico placed the acquisition within Uriach's 2013–2017 strategic plan, which aimed to grow the group through acquisitions. Uriach's chief executive, Oriol Segarra, described the purchase as a strategic and long-term opportunity. Fisiocrem joined the group's Consumer Health division alongside brands such as Aquilea, Biodramina, Filvit, Fave de Fuca and Utabon. Uriach began selling Fisiocrem in Spain in November 2015, in 60 ml and 250 ml sizes.

Since then the Uriach version of the brand has spread further. The German-language site fisiocrem.ch is operated by Uriach Germany GmbH, based in Bad Ems [4], and lists Uriach Consumer Healthcare, S.L. as the manufacturer. Its language options cover Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal, and an international site, fisiocrem.eu, is offered in English and Romanian. When and how Uriach's markets grew beyond the 2015 territories has not been documented.

The Fisiocrem name is also used by Pronat Group Australia Pty Ltd, based in Molendinar, Queensland, which runs Australian and New Zealand websites with a range of its own, including products called Solugel, Joint Ease and fisiospray [14]. Whether that company is connected to the original Catalan business has not been publicly confirmed.

## Philosophy & positioning

Fisiocrem presents itself as a muscle-and-joint specialist. Its international site calls the brand an "expert in muscles, joints and ligaments" and says the range is meant to help prevent injuries and relieve muscle and joint pain [5]. The Swiss site takes a softer, cosmetic line, describing the products as skin care for the area around stressed muscles and joints, with ingredients of natural origin and suitable for the whole family.

How the products are classed has varied with the source. When Uriach bought the brand in 2015, El Farmacéutico described Fisiocrem as a medicine that relieves muscle and ligament problems with natural extracts [11]. The current Swiss product pages, by contrast, describe the core cream as a massage cream for skin care.

The brand's taglines follow the same active, everyday theme. The German-language line "fisiocrem, damit dich nichts aufhalten kann" translates roughly as "so that nothing can stop you", while the Spanish site uses "Fisiocrem lo da todo para que tú también lo hagas" ("Fisiocrem gives its all so you can too").

Physiotherapists remain part of the brand's identity. The Spanish and international sites feature named physiotherapists as associated experts and carry testimonials from practitioners, and Uriach runs a separate registration area for physiotherapists.

## Products & innovation

The core of the range is a blend Uriach calls the FisioActive formula, which the company says is based on ingredients of natural origin such as arnica and St John's wort. Across the range, the brand lists six plant ingredients: arnica, hypericum (St John's wort), calendula, melaleuca (tea tree), harpagophytum (devil's claw) and ginkgo. The 2015 trade coverage described the original composition as arnica, calendula, hypericum and melaleuca.

The product that built the brand is the massage cream, sold today as Fisiocrem Cream Active (Active Cream in some markets). The company describes it as a cream that, applied with massage, has a soothing and refreshing effect after activity. According to its FAQ, it can be used from the age of three, typically two or three times a day.

Around that cream, the range has grown in several directions:

- **Fisiocrem Gel Active** and **Fisiocrem Gel Forte**, gel versions of the formula. Gel Forte, the newest addition, is described as formulated for acute pain in muscles, joints and ligaments.
- **Fisiocrem Spray Active Ice**, a cooling spray that the company says gives an immediate cold effect for minor aches.
- **Fisiocrem Roll-On Golpix**, a cooling roll-on based on natural extracts.
- **Fisiocrem Patch Active**, a patch that the brand says uses microcurrent technology, meaning very small electrical currents, to relieve muscle and joint pain.
- **Fisiocrem Cream CBD** and a **Cannabidiol Patch**, which uses cannabidiol (CBD), a compound from the cannabis plant; the patch is described as releasing it gradually over ten hours.
- **Fisiocrem Professional**, a more fluid version for physiotherapists and other manual therapists, which the company says also cares for the therapist's hands.

Not every product is offered everywhere. The Swiss site, for example, lists only Cream Active, Spray Active Ice and Gel Forte, while the Spanish and international sites carry the wider range.

A 2015 report placed manufacturing of the finished product at a laboratory in Sant Celoni, Catalonia. Uriach's current websites do not state where the products are made.

## Recognition

Press coverage of Fisiocrem has come largely from Catalan regional newspapers and Spanish trade titles. El 9 Nou followed the company's growth in Osona in 2012 and its sale in 2015. The Spanish pharmacy trade titles El Farmacéutico and IM Farmacias reported on the Uriach acquisition and the Spanish relaunch. In 2025 the advertising trade publication Periódico Publicidad covered the campaign for Gel Forte. No awards for the brand are documented.

## Current status

Fisiocrem is an acquired brand that remains active under Uriach. Its most recent visible milestone came in November 2025, when it launched Fisiocrem Gel Forte together with new packaging and an international campaign across television, connected TV, social media and points of sale.

The campaign was created by Microbio, part of the communications group ATREVIA. Its advert shows a mother who, free of pain, can dance with her daughter again. The campaign also reworked a long-running visual element of the brand: the mesh pattern that had appeared throughout its past communications, now redrawn as a wrapping mesh meant to suggest the product's effect.

Under Uriach, the brand is sold mainly through pharmacies and parapharmacies, supported by its own websites for several European countries. Separately, the Australian company continues to sell its own Fisiocrem range in Australia and New Zealand.
