Helago is a German oral-care company that specialises in products for people who wear dentures and braces. It traces its roots to Heinz & Laufer Dentalfabrik, a dental manufacturer founded in Bonn in 1932 [2], and today operates as Helago-Pharma GmbH & Co. KG from Parchim in Mecklenburg. Its best-known consumer line is dentipur, a range of denture-cleaning tablets, adhesive cream and cleaning gel, while some care products carry the Helago name itself.

Much of the company's business is invisible to shoppers. Helago describes itself as a maker of white-label and private-label denture-care products for partners in other countries, and since 2019 it has belonged to the German contract manufacturer BMP Production GmbH [2]. According to the company, the group now sells more than 250 million denture-cleaning tablets a year worldwide [3].

## Origin & founders

The business began in 1932 as Heinz & Laufer Dentalfabrik, a dental products maker in Bonn. The company still refers to itself as "Heinz & Laufer from Bad Godesberg", keeping the original firm's name alive in its own account of its history. Its published history does not name the individuals behind the firm, and it does not explain how the name Helago was formed.

Six years after the founding, in 1938, Helago was registered as the company's new name [2]. In 1942 it registered the trademark dentipur, which the company says has since been used internationally [2].

## History & milestones

Helago's early work centred on dental and denture hygiene. The step that shaped its later business came in 1967, when it introduced quick-cleaning tablets for dentures and braces. These tablets, dissolved in water to clean a removable appliance, remain at the centre of the company's output. A dentipur cleaning gel followed in 1970.

The adhesive-cream side of the business, which holds dentures in place in the mouth, was expanded in 2008. Five years later, in 2013, the company moved its headquarters from the Bonn area to Erftstadt, near Cologne.

The years from 2019 onwards brought a run of changes. That year the company was renamed Helago-Pharma GmbH & Co. KG and became part of BMP Production GmbH. In 2020 it moved again, this time to Parchim in Mecklenburg. In 2023 BMP Oral Care GmbH was set up as a contract manufacturer for the oral-care range; the company says this was done to meet growing demand [3].

## Ownership

Helago has been part of BMP Production GmbH since 2019. Its English-language company page puts it this way: since that year, Helago "has been part of BMP Production GmbH" and sells its tablets worldwide [3]. The parent's presence is visible on the company website itself, whose homepage carries the title "BMP Production – Lohnhersteller für Pharma und Lebensmittel", describing BMP as a contract manufacturer for pharmaceuticals and food.

Within the group, Helago describes its own role as developing products and supplying private-label goods for national and international markets, while BMP Oral Care GmbH, founded in 2023, acts as a contract manufacturer for the oral-care products. The company says the range is developed further together with other certified contract manufacturers, and that Helago and BMP Oral Care provide quality management and regulatory support to business customers.

## Philosophy & positioning

Helago presents itself as a long-established company standing for "tradition, innovation and the best oral hygiene" for more than 90 years. Its tagline asks customers to trust in experience and proven quality. The company frames denture care as part of everyday mouth hygiene, arguing on its website that cleaning dentures and braces should be thorough but gentle on the material, and that the balance between cleaning and disinfection matters. It notes that around 16 million people in Germany wear a full or partial denture.

Two audiences run through the company's positioning. For consumers there are its own brands: dentipur is the main one, alongside Helago and Audiozon, all of which the company says are sold worldwide. For businesses, Helago offers its formulas as ready-made white-label products. A partner can skip formula development entirely and move straight to designing its own packaging, putting its own brand name on Helago's recipes.

The company says these private-label products have been made for national and international partners in more than 40 countries for decades [6]. It offers a wide choice of packaging, from folding boxes, tubes and bottles to bulk goods, with blister packs available only for markets outside the European Union. Its tablets come in pack sizes ranging from 30 to 128 tablets per box.

Helago also positions itself as an adviser to these partners. On its service pages it says it helps clients with formulations and packaging, checks what is feasible, and looks for alternatives that take sustainability and cost efficiency into account [8]. It does not publish specific environmental targets.

## Products & innovation

The dentipur range covers the main steps of caring for a removable dental appliance. Its core product is the Schnellreinigungs-Tabs Aktiv Plus, a quick-cleaning tablet that the company recommends for full and partial dentures, braces and dental splints. On its website, Helago also lists cleaning of otoplastics, the custom-moulded ear pieces used with hearing aids, among the uses of its tablet formulas. The tablets work with active oxygen, which the company describes as antibacterial and disinfecting within ten minutes in 100 ml of water.

The company's own pages give two different figures for that effect. The consumer page for dentipur says the tablet eliminates "up to 99.9%" of bacteria and helps prevent tartar build-up [4]. The white-label page, describing what appears to be the same active-oxygen tablet for business customers, says it eliminates 99.99% of bacteria and removes tartar rather than preventing it [7]. The white-label page mentions two tablet formulas of the company's own without saying which figure belongs to which. Neither claim is presented as the result of a clinical study.

The second pillar of the range is the dentipur Premium Haftcreme, an adhesive cream with chamomile and sage. Helago says the cream gives a secure hold and, through those plant extracts, helps prevent pressure sores and inflammation, and soothes the skin and lining of the mouth. The company also points out a practical benefit of adhesive creams in general: by fixing the denture in place, they help stop food particles from collecting underneath it.

The dentipur Reinigungs-Gel, introduced in 1970, is a cleaning gel that the company says removes food residue and smoking stains and helps prevent plaque. Under the Helago name itself, the company sells a Pflege-Öl, a care oil with chamomile and sage meant to soothe the skin and mouth lining when new or worn dentures cause irritation.

According to the company, the whole dentipur range is free of preservatives, and all of its oral-care products are made exclusively in Germany. It describes its production as following GMP (good manufacturing practice) quality standards.

Helago is certified under ISO 13485, the international standard for quality management in medical-device manufacturing [6]. Its certificate page also lists a halal certificate from WHU and a kosher certificate [5].

## Recognition

The most detailed independent assessment of a Helago product came from the German consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST, which tested ten denture adhesive creams from drugstores and pharmacies for its issue 4/2014 [9]. The products were bought in December 2013, so the results reflect the formulas sold at that time.

The dentipur Premium Haftcreme received an overall rating of "befriedigend" (satisfactory) [9]. Test users rated it "good", which gave it a good mark in the practical test. The testers criticised its use of paraffins, which the magazine objected to because adhesive creams are partly swallowed and paraffins can then build up in the body. They also noted that the packaging did not advise users to consult a dentist before using an adhesive. Only one product in the test, from another brand, earned an overall "good"; the ratings across the ten creams ranged from "good" to "inadequate", and dentipur shared the second-best overall result.

No industry awards for Helago or dentipur are documented.

## Current status

Helago is an active company. Its website was updated during 2025 and 2026, with new certificate documents including a halal certificate dated 2025, and its homepage announces a stand at the Altenpflegemesse, a trade fair for the elderly-care sector held in Essen from 21 to 23 April. The company continues to present dentipur as its main consumer brand while placing much of its emphasis on supplying white-label denture-care products to business partners in many countries.
