Holistic Silk is an independent British maker of silk and velvet textile accessories for sleep, relaxation and beauty, best known for its lavender-filled silk eye masks. It was started by textile designer Joanna Weakley in North West London at the turn of the millennium and has been run from Boscastle, on the north coast of Cornwall, since 2015. The company sells no cosmetic formulas; its range is made up of sleep masks, eye pillows, pillowcases, scrunchies, hair wraps and other wellness pieces, most of them built around mulberry silk and dried lavender.

The brand is still trading. The operating company, Holistic Silk Limited, is listed as active on the UK companies register, which shows a confirmation statement filed in June 2026 [15]. The brand's own pages give two slightly different founding dates, 1999 and 2000, a small discrepancy covered below.

## Origin & founders

Joanna Weakley studied textile design at Chelsea School of Art and began her career as a freelance textile designer and trend spotter. She grew up as the youngest of four siblings, moving between the UK, Portugal and Hong Kong as a child, and has said that this restless upbringing is perhaps where the travel element of the brand comes from.

In the mid-1990s she took a buying job with a Shiatsu massage and wellbeing business. The company's founder feature describes it as London's first "Walk In Back Rub" Shiatsu space. Speaking to the lifestyle blogger Natalie Glaze in 2016, Weakley recalled that years of buying products for other companies showed her "there was a gap in the market" [11]. On the brand's founder page she puts it more simply: "I couldn't find what I was looking for so created it myself."

According to Holistic Silk, Weakley set up the business in 1999 from a flat share in North West London, working at her kitchen table and funded by a loan from the Prince's Trust, the British charity that supports young entrepreneurs [5]. The first product was a Lavender Eye Pillow, which the company says is still a cornerstone of the collection.

The founding year is not given consistently on the company's own website. The founder page and a founder feature both date the start to 1999 [3], while the brand's provenance page says that "Holistic Silk launched in 2000" [2]. A related wobble runs through the brand's anniversary messaging: the founder page treats 2024 as the 25th anniversary year, whereas the brand's mantra page speaks of "Celebrating 25 years in 2025". One plausible reading is that 1999 marks the first product and 2000 the commercial launch, but the company does not explain the difference. This article follows 1999, the year tied on two pages to the first product and the Prince's Trust loan. Weakley's 2016 remark that the eye mask was still the best seller "after 15 years" fits either date.

## History & milestones

From its London beginnings the business grew into a supplier to high-end department stores and hospitality. The founder page names Harrods, Selfridges and Harvey Nichols in London among its past stockists, alongside spas and hotels such as the Mandarin Oriental and Four Seasons [3].

The Lavender Eye Mask, part of the original collection, became the company's long-running bestseller. In the 2016 interview Weakley said it was still the top seller and was by then made in a range of different fabrics [11]. Independent bloggers reviewed the masks in the same period. A 2015 review on the UK beauty blog Really Ree described the Anti Ageing Silk Eye Mask as made from satin silk, available scented with lavender or unscented, and designed to block out light completely; the reviewer said the satin silk "helps prevent facial creasing" and called the mask a welcome addition to her skincare routine [12].

In 2015 Weakley moved her family and the business from London to Boscastle in North Cornwall. She told Natalie Glaze that after 25 years in London the move "has been filled with challenges", but that waking up in a new landscape gave her "a totally new perspective". In Cornwall she runs the company with a small team, describing the change as part of a search for a more balanced way of life.

The years since have been shaped by design rather than expansion. In 2024, according to the company, Weakley spent more time on her studio practice, creating original designs for a printed sleep mask collection released to mark the brand's 25th anniversary year. The latest masks carry her own watercolour artwork, and the online shop also sells botanical watercolour prints by Weakley.

## Ownership

Holistic Silk describes itself as "a purpose driven independent business with an innovative and humanistic mindset" [4], and no parent group or outside owner is documented. The trading company is Holistic Silk Ltd, registered in England and Wales under company number 05468160. Its registered office is in Bodmin, Cornwall, while the operating base and returns address are in Boscastle [15]. No acquisitions or sister brands are recorded.

The company's location is described inconsistently online. Its sleep-mask collection page still refers to the brand as being based in London, which reflects its first decade and a half. The founder page, the returns address and the 2015 relocation all place the business in Cornwall today.

## Philosophy & positioning

Weakley presents Holistic Silk as a response to modern stress. "I created Holistic Silk as an antidote to the fast pace and stress of modern life," she says in the company's founder feature, a line that also appears in regional press coverage of the brand's product launches. The stated mission is to "bring joy, peace, serenity and a touch of luxury into every day and night", and the company's tagline reads "Enhancing sleep, wellness & beauty for 25 years".

The design rules she sets out are practical. Everything the brand makes, according to the founder feature, must be "beautiful, functional, easy to use with no preparation, grounded in time-honoured therapies and made to last." In the 2016 interview she described her aim as marrying technical function with attractive textiles, so that products help people unwind while also looking good. She also claimed the company was "one of the first brands with this kind of concept", before holistic wellness became mainstream.

Holistic Silk lists creativity, empathy and positivity as its core values and says that a small team designs, makes, checks and packs each piece by hand. The company frames its products as long-lasting "investment pieces" and says it wants to build a community around "considered, responsible, long lasting products". The online shop groups items by concern as well as by product type, with tags such as insomnia, anxiety, menopause, acupressure, reflexology and aromatherapy.

The brand has traditionally sat at the upper end of the market, given its past department-store and luxury-hotel stockists. It sells mainly through its own online shop, which ships internationally with duties prepaid for much of Europe and the United States, and it also runs a wholesale channel for trade customers.

## Products & innovation

The range splits into three broad groups. Sleep masks form the core, in several styles: the Classic Silk Lavender Eye Mask, a Deluxe version, a Silk Velvet Sleep Mask, an Unscented mask, a One Strap mask and the Limited Edition printed designs. On its mantra page the company describes its flagship mask as "Possibly the world's best Eye Mask – oversized, truly light blocking". Most masks are made of pure mulberry silk with a dried lavender filling.

A beauty line covers silk pillowcases, face pillows, scrunchies, hair wraps, hairbands, wash bags and make-up bags, along with a wide-tooth detangling comb and a gemstone facial roller. The wellness range includes lavender eye pillows, a silk velvet hot water bottle, yoga rug mats and massaging slippers.

Materials are central to how the company describes its products. Its FAQ says the brand uses mulberry silk at a weight of 22 momme, a measure of silk density, woven from longer fibres to give a "friction-free mirror smooth finish". It also works with dupion silk, a more textured and lustrous weave. Lavender is used throughout the sleep products; the company says it helps people relax and sleep. The company says many items are vegan-friendly, including all the yoga mats and some velvet-lined eye masks, although the silk products themselves are not.

No third-party product certifications, such as textile-safety labels, are documented.

## Sustainability

Ethical production is a recurring theme in the brand's self-description. Holistic Silk says its products are made in short runs following Fair Trade principles, mainly in partnership with The Help Foundation, an Indian NGO [8]. The company's provenance page names Delhi and London as its production locations and describes the Indian unit as staffed by skilled craftspeople. According to the brand, the Help Foundation partnership has lasted more than 20 years and the NGO offers skills training, mentoring for female entrepreneurs, health drives, education and food distribution. These are self-reported practices; no formal fair-trade certification is cited.

On materials and packaging, the company says it sources fabric through waste-reduction channels, often buying archive pieces. It also says only one product uses single-use packaging, with the rest shipped in reusable organza bags, and that its printed materials are fully recyclable.

The brand also runs a take-back scheme. It accepts any original Holistic Silk product, whatever its age or wherever it was bought, and offers a discount on the next purchase in return. The company states that "all items returned to us under this scheme will be responsibly recycled" [7].

## Recognition

All of the brand's awards are reported by the company itself, mostly without a category or awarding body. For 2023 its website lists a "Best Ethically Sourced Luxury Wellness Brand" title in the UK and a win at the Attracta Beauty Awards, plus wins at the LUXlife Health Beauty and Wellness Awards and the Global Green Beauty Awards [6]. The LUXlife award and the "Best Ethically Sourced" title may be the same honour listed twice. The company also lists wins at the Health & Wellbeing Awards and a Hot 100 award, linked on its collection page to Harper's Bazaar's Beauty Hot 100, but gives no year for either.

On press coverage, Holistic Silk says it has been featured in Vogue and Elle. It quotes Elle describing its masks as "A total mind and body overhaul in just eight hours", but the original articles and their dates are not identified. Independent coverage includes product reviews on beauty blogs, a 2016 founder interview, and a regional wedding magazine news item on new silk products from the Boscastle-based brand, framed as pre-wedding pampering.

## Current status

Holistic Silk is active. Holistic Silk Limited is listed as an active private limited company, with accounts made up to 31 March 2025 and a confirmation statement dated 11 June 2026 [15]. The company's website carries a 2026 copyright notice and a current online shop. Joanna Weakley continues to lead the business and to design its products from Boscastle with a small team.
