Kadus Professional is a German professional haircare brand built around color, care, styling and texture products sold to salons rather than directly to the public. Its roots reach back to Ludwig Kegel, an independent German stylist who opened his first salon in Neustadt in 1906. The Kadus name itself came a little later, from a 1919 patent for an automatic disinfector and rinser for barber clippers and cutting blades — "Kegel's Automatischer Desinfektor und Spüler" [2].

Since 1974 the brand has not been independent: it became part of the Wella group that year and has operated ever since as a professional sub-brand within what is today the Wella Company [2]. It remains actively trading, with a live multi-country website and salon activity in several regions.

## Origin & founders

The brand's history is tied to one person, Ludwig Kegel, who is described as the founding father and an independent German stylist. Kegel opened his first salon in Neustadt in 1906, and the company presents him as a hairdresser who valued professional technique and equipment as much as the craft itself.

The founding date is recorded in more than one way. The company's own timeline separates the 1906 opening of Kegel's first salon from 1919, when the Kadus name first appeared through his patent [2]. Because the name originates in 1919, that year is treated here as the brand's founding, with 1906 kept as an earlier milestone in Kegel's career. A South African trade report gives a different figure, dating the founding to 1917 [6]; this does not match the company's own record and is not used here.

## Ownership

Kadus joined the Wella group in 1974, a step the company credits with opening the way to rapid international expansion [2]. It has remained within that corporate family since, and today sits alongside other professional and consumer names in the Wella Company portfolio, among them Londa Professional, Sassoon Professional, Sebastian Professional, System Professional and Nioxin [1].

By 1985 the brand reported operating in 35 countries while, in its own words, keeping its purpose unchanged: to serve hairdressers and help them refine their skills.

## Philosophy & positioning

Kadus positions itself squarely around independent, small salons. Its stated purpose is "to empower Independence," and the company says it has served small independent salons and stylists for more than half a century [2]. That outlook is set out in a short list of beliefs, including that "small is the future" and that "the best business is your own." In its own materials the brand frames itself as a supplier of reliable products and education for stylists building their own businesses, under the line "Everything you need for hair."

The range is sold through professional channels rather than to consumers directly. Trade coverage has described the products as less complex and more economically priced than some competitors while presenting them as comparable in quality [6].

## Products & innovation

The brand's assortment is organised into color, care, styling and texture. Named ranges surfaced when Wella introduced Kadus Professional to the North American market in 2016: a color line spanning 44 shades, care systems marketed as Color Vibrancy, Visible Repair, Deep Moisture and Impressive Volume, and a Velvet Oil styling product [5]. These names date from that launch and may reflect the range of that period rather than the current lineup.

The single piece of documented technical history is the origin of the name itself — Kegel's 1919 disinfector-and-rinser patent for barber tools, which gave the brand its identity.

## Recognition

In 2016 the trade title Estetica Magazine covered Wella's introduction of Kadus Professional to North America as a European "lifestyle salon brand" drawing on more than 90 years of international heritage [5]. For that launch the celebrity colorist Glenn Nutley was appointed as the brand's Color and Stylist Celebrity Ambassador.

More recently, in June 2025, a trade report documented a 15-year anniversary event for Kadus in Cape Town, South Africa, held alongside the brand's annual awards for salons and retailers [6].

## Current status

Kadus Professional is an acquired brand, part of the Wella Company since 1974, and there is no sign it operates as an independent company today [2]. It nonetheless remains active: it runs a live multi-country website, launched into the North American market in 2016, and held its South African anniversary event with annual salon and retailer awards in 2025 [6].
