Lengling Munich, which presents itself as the Maison LENGLING, is a German perfume house based in Munich. It was created by the married couple Christian and Ursula Lengling, who still run it as an owner-managed family business. The company dates its founding to 2014 [1], while a 2017 magazine interview with the founders gives 2015 as the year the brand was established and its first collection reached the market [6]. The two dates describe different steps rather than a true contradiction: the setting-up of the house, and the launch of its first perfumes in July 2015.

The house is known for a single organising idea. Every Lengling perfume is built around two contrasting accords, called LENG and LING after the family name, which are meant to balance each other on the skin. Its range centres on perfume extracts, alongside a body-care line called Namui and a small selection of hair perfumes. The brand is active, with a flagship boutique beside Munich's cathedral and an online shop.

## Origin & founders

Both founders came to perfume through family and personal history rather than formal training in the industry. Christian Lengling was born in Tokyo and grew up in Munich. In the 2017 interview he said his father had worked in the perfume and beauty business throughout his career and had been responsible for large brands such as YSL and Versace, so that he grew up surrounded by fragrance [6]. Ursula Lengling grew up in Bavaria. The couple met at university and married four years later; they have three children.

Their route to a brand of their own was gradual. According to Christian Lengling, the couple started a company in 2007 to distribute and sell niche fragrances made by others [6]. Five years later, in 2012, they decided the time was right to create a brand. Ursula Lengling has described the first collection as a long project that took three years to develop. In the same interview, Christian Lengling called the company the first perfume manufacturer in Munich, and the brand's own website describes it as the city's first perfume house. Both statements come from the company itself.

The couple divide the work between them. Ursula Lengling is the creative head and develops the perfumes, while both founders are listed as managing directors of the operating company.

## History & milestones

Lengling launched in July 2015 with seven unisex perfume extracts, sold first in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. By January 2017 the brand had expanded to Russia, Azerbaijan and Dubai, where it was sold exclusively through Paris Gallery [6]. Christian Lengling acknowledged at the time that standing out in the Middle East was difficult, given the number of perfume brands already present in the region.

Recognition from the German fragrance industry followed in 2018. In April of that year, wunderwind – No 9 won the DUFTSTARS German perfume prize in the "Artistic Independent Perfume" category, awarded by the Fragrance Foundation Deutschland at a gala held in the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin [8]. Other winners that evening included fragrances from Chanel, Bottega Veneta and Karl Lagerfeld.

The next major step was retail. In summer 2021 the house opened its first flagship store, the Parfum Boutique am Dom, in central Munich [1]. The shop stands directly by the Frauenkirche, Munich's cathedral, and the company's white-walled offices sit on the floors above it. Until then, the founders had sold their perfumes mainly through selected perfumeries in Germany and abroad.

In 2022, according to the company, its Namui body cream won the Swiss Prix de Beauté [2].

## Ownership

Lengling Munich is a family business without any documented corporate parent or outside investor. The brand is operated by LENGLING LUXURY GmbH & Co. KG, a limited partnership registered at the Munich district court. Its general partner is LENCOS Consulting GmbH, and Christian and Ursula Lengling are named as its managing directors.

The company's registered address is in Gräfelfing, a suburb just outside Munich [4]. The brand itself identifies as a Munich house, and its public face, the boutique and the creative offices, is in the city centre. Neither location is disputed; they reflect the difference between a legal seat and the place where the brand operates day to day. No acquisitions, by or of the company, are documented.

## Philosophy & positioning

The LENG and LING principle sits at the centre of how the house describes itself. The founders say it grew out of the contrasts in their own lives, and the brand illustrates it with pairings such as dark leather against sweet candyfloss, or smoky tones against watery freshness. In the 2017 interview Ursula Lengling contrasted this with the usual model of top, heart and base notes that change as a perfume wears. In her description, the two opposing accords are present from the moment the perfume is applied until it fades.

Her own example was the first fragrance, No 1. In it, a cool, bright note she called "brilliant diamond" plays the LENG role, while magnolia and vanilla form the warmer LING side. Christian Lengling added that, because the company had no long tradition behind it, it was free to find a different way of building perfumes.

A second recurring theme is the pairing of Bavaria and Japan. Christian Lengling's birthplace and the family's regular trips to Tokyo are cited by the founders as a lasting influence,. The company says it aims to create "Gesamtkunstwerke", or complete works of art, rather than simply fine fragrances. Its tagline is "Masterpieces of Modern Perfume Art".

The brand positions itself at the top end of the market. Ursula Lengling said in 2017 that the founders wanted the brand to be "special and different", and the company stresses craftsmanship and attention to detail. According to the house, each new creation takes Ursula Lengling two to three years to develop, drawing on personal memories, moments and encounters.

## Products & innovation

The core of the range is a numbered series of perfume extracts. Among those the company presents as bestsellers are el pasajero – No 1, a fresh, floral fragrance; sekushi – No 7, described as sensual, woody-leathery and fruity-sweet; and wunderwind – No 9, the 2018 award winner. Other perfumes include à la carte – No 6, apéro – No 8, Glorya Day, Figolo and WHAT ABOUT ME?, and a more concentrated sekushi – No 7 SUPREME. The brand also sells hair perfumes, a discovery set of small samples, and limited editions.

The house sells pure perfume rather than eau de parfum or eau de toilette. In an interview with Munich's official tourism portal, the company's perfumes were described as containing up to 30 percent fragrance oils, compared with at most eight percent in an eau de toilette [5].

One perfume is tied directly to the city. Eisbach, which Ursula Lengling calls her Munich fragrance, takes its name from the Eisbach, the stream at the edge of the English Garden known for its standing wave, the Eisbachwelle. She has described it as a portrait of two opposites close to each other there: the rushing water of the wave, and the stillness of the nearby Japanese teahouse, which Japan gave to the city for the 1972 Olympic Games [5]. Citrus notes, including Italian bergamot, lime and grapefruit, carry the energetic side, joined by blackcurrant and mimosa.

The company says it uses natural raw materials from around the world where they are grown in an environmentally sound way. It cites vanilla from Madagascar and Arabian jasmine from Egypt as examples.

Packaging is part of the same design idea. Each 50 ml bottle is handmade, with a satin label placed on a corner, so that the bottle has no obvious front or back. The metal cap reproduces a pebble the founders found while walking by the Isar river in Munich; it is reproduced in metal, and each one is polished by hand. The boxes are handmade from special paper by a small company near Munich. According to the founders, everything is produced in Bavaria except the glass bottles, which are made in France [6].

Alongside the perfumes, the house sells the Namui body-care line: a body cream, shower cream, hand cream and hand wash. Namui is also the name of one of the perfumes.

## Sustainability

The company presents its environmental approach under the heading "Made in Bavaria". It says it limits its impact through local production and by working with regional suppliers by preference. It also states that all of its formulations are vegan [3].

The Namui body-care line is described as "clean". According to the company, it is made without microplastics, silicones, parabens, mineral oils, essential perfume oils, artificial colourings or PEGs. The brand also says its office building is climate-neutral. Its own summary is modest: the company writes that it is not yet perfect but is working to improve. No third-party certifications are documented.

## Recognition

The brand's best-documented honour is the 2018 DUFTSTARS award. wunderwind – No 9 won in the "Artistic Independent Perfume" category, presented by the Fragrance Foundation Deutschland, an industry body of perfume makers, suppliers, retailers and media [8]. DUFTSTARS has been awarded in Germany since 1993.

The company also reports that its Namui body cream won the Swiss Prix de Beauté in 2022.

The founders have been interviewed by A&E Magazine in the United Arab Emirates, in a 2017 feature on the brand's origins and design. They also appeared on Munich's official tourism portal, which profiled Ursula Lengling and the Eisbach perfume as part of a series on local businesses.

## Current status

Lengling Munich is active. The company operates its Munich boutique, with offices above it, and runs an online shop; its website carried a 2026 copyright notice in October 2026. The founders continue to manage the business, and the house sells its perfumes both through its own channels and through perfumeries in Germany and abroad.
