Megadent is a family-run German dental-care company based in Düsseldorf. Founded in 1994, it began with specialist toothbrush and oral-care shops, and today it works as a wholesaler, an online retailer and, according to some of its own pages, a small chain of stores that once reached as far as Tokyo [2]. Most of what it sells comes from other manufacturers, but it also markets a range of dental accessories and tools under its own name.

The company is active. Its own website gives two different accounts of whether its shops still exist: one page says five stores remain today, another refers to them as former shops. Both descriptions are set out below.

## Origin & founders

According to the company, Megadent was founded in 1994 with the aim of making dental care simpler and easier to reach for ordinary people. It describes itself as an owner-managed family business, and the phrase "family business since 1994" appears prominently on its homepage.

The founders are not named in public. The company's About page is written by the founders' daughter, who says she grew up around dental care and now leads the brand with a young team, more than 30 years after the founding.

## History & milestones

The first Megadent dental-care shop opened in 1997 on Schadowstraße, one of Düsseldorf's main shopping streets [3]. Over the following years further specialist shops were added. Their purpose, as the company tells it, was less about selling products than about advising customers in person on how to look after their teeth.

At some point Megadent opened a branch in Tokyo, in the Ginza district. The company does not give a year for this. The store appears in a Japanese magazine's shop listing in June 2019 [7], and again in June 2022, when the same magazine interviewed its manager [6].

As shopping habits changed, Megadent says it moved its business online step by step. Its history page describes the online shop as the way it now serves customers across Germany and beyond. No year is given for this shift.

### The question of the stores

The company's own pages disagree on the state of its shop network. The About page says that five Megadent stores still exist today, one of them in Tokyo [3]. A second company page makes the same claim, describing five of its own retail shops including a branch in Tokyo [4]. An earlier version of that page had specified four stores in Germany and one in Tokyo.

The history page tells a different story. It speaks of "our former specialist shops" and presents the online shop as the company's channel today [2]. None of these pages carries a date, so it is not clear which account is the more recent. Meanwhile the homepage still invites customers to visit in central Düsseldorf, at Am Wehrhahn 39, from Monday to Saturday. The most recent independent sign that the Tokyo store was trading is the 2022 magazine interview.

## Ownership

Megadent has no known parent company. The legal notice on its website names the operator as Megadent-Deflogrip Gerhard Reeg GmbH, registered in Düsseldorf, with Gerhard Reeg as managing director [5]. The homepage uses the shorter form "Megadent GmbH" at the same address.

A Taiwanese-language travel feature about the Ginza store described it as a directly operated branch of a German company called "megadental GmbH" [8]. That name does not match the company's own legal notice, and the article's attribution appears to be an error.

## Philosophy & positioning

Personal advice sits at the centre of how Megadent presents itself. The company says expert guidance was part of its philosophy from the start, on the view that dental care is individual and deserves sound knowledge. Its stated mission is to help people of all ages improve their oral health and smile with confidence.

Megadent names quality, reliability and efficient logistics as the values that shape the business. The company says it works closely with its suppliers, runs regular quality checks and plans its purchasing ahead so that products stay available without long delivery times. An earlier version of its company page also referred to an in-house quality management system used to keep refining its processes. On its homepage it also argues that good dental care should not depend on the size of a person's wallet, and frames its regular offers in that light.

Its business has two sides. As a wholesaler, Megadent supplies pharmacies, pharmaceutical wholesalers and dentists across Germany [4]. As a retailer, it sells directly to consumers through its online shop and, by its own account, its stores. The About page describes the range as oral-care, medical and cosmetic products.

## Products & innovation

Much of the range consists of other companies' brands. In early 2025 the shop's list of manufacturers ran to more than thirty names, among them Curaprox, elmex, Oral-B, Philips, paro SWISS, Sunstar GUM and TePe, with Megadent's own label listed among them. In October 2026 the homepage was promoting PerioTrap toothpaste for pre-order, and products credited to the Ginza store in the 2022 magazine feature included items from TePe, Lion and GC [6].

Goods sold under the Megadent name are mostly practical dental accessories and tools. They include the Jony toothbrush, which the shop marks as a personal recommendation, and the Dentobox, a small storage box flagged as top rated. Alongside these sit a stainless-steel tongue scraper, orthodontic wax, a brace-care starter kit and a brushing timer sold as the Zahnputzuhr Deflogrip. The list also reaches into professional territory, with dental mirrors, a tartar scaler and dental probes, and into everyday health goods such as pill boxes, a blackhead remover and a gel eye mask.

One product links the company to Japan's snack industry. The Taiwanese-language feature on the Ginza store describes LS1, a dental candy said to be co-developed by the chip maker Koikeya and Megadent [8]. According to that feature, the candy is taken after brushing to raise levels of the lactic-acid bacterium LS1 in saliva.

## Recognition

Megadent's press coverage centres on its Tokyo store. In 2022 the Japanese women's magazine FRaU, published by Kodansha, ran an article on choosing toothbrushes and dental goods to suit particular concerns, such as crooked teeth or sensitivity. It was based on an interview with Jun Sakomukai, manager of Megadent Ginza. The magazine's store profile said the shop advises customers on the basis of Germany's "intensive care" approach to oral hygiene and stocks many toothbrushes and toothpastes from makers not found in drugstores [6].

An undated Taiwanese-language feature on the Japanese travel site MATCHA, written with the shop's cooperation, described Megadent Ginza as Tokyo's only toothbrush specialty store and the brand's only branch in Asia. It noted that the manager held a German toothbrush-sales qualification and could advise customers in English, Japanese and German.

No industry awards are documented.

## Current status

Megadent is active. Its homepage carries a regularly updated series of dental-care articles, the most recent dated 27 May 2026 and dealing with xylitol in toothpaste and other products [1]. In October 2026 the online shop was taking pre-orders for a new toothpaste. Whether the company still runs five shops, including the one in Tokyo, remains unresolved on its own website.
