Mirfulan is a German pharmacy brand for sore, irritated and damaged skin, best known for a zinc oxide ointment used on nappy rash and chafed skin. The brand belongs to Recordati Pharma GmbH, the Ulm-based German subsidiary of the Italian Recordati group [1]. Recordati acquired it in 2005 as part of a package of established medicines bought from the German drugmaker Merckle GmbH [7].

Mirfulan is therefore an acquired brand rather than an independent one, but it remains on sale. Its range is small: two pharmacy-only medicines built around zinc oxide and a cortisone-free cream sold as a medical device. Unlike most skincare brands, it organises itself around skin conditions rather than beauty routines.

## History & milestones

No founding year, founder or origin story for Mirfulan is publicly documented. The brand's recorded history begins with its time in the portfolio of Merckle GmbH, a German pharmaceutical manufacturer. There it sat in Merckle's division of original products, alongside over-the-counter names such as Dolobene, Osteoplus and Silibene and prescription drugs including Claversal, Lipotalon and Imbun.

In 2005 the Italian Recordati group bought that division, Mirfulan included [9]. The German business then traded as Merckle Recordati GmbH for several years. From January 2012 it took the name Recordati Pharma GmbH, which still owns the brand today [9].

By then Mirfulan carried real weight inside its new owner. A 2013 report in the German pharmacy trade publication APOTHEKE ADHOC, examining Recordati's plans to grow its non-prescription business in Germany, named the zinc oxide and urea ointment as the largest product in that segment. Mirfulan accounted for about 5.1 million euros of the roughly 12.9 million euros of over-the-counter revenue Recordati recorded in Germany in 2012 [8].

## Ownership

Mirfulan is a trademark of Recordati Pharma GmbH, whose registered address is in Ulm [6]. The company is part of the Italian Recordati group, to which it has belonged since the 2005 takeover of Merckle's original-products business [10]. Besides its over-the-counter brands, Recordati Pharma is active in prescription medicine, particularly in orthopaedics and sports medicine, gastroenterology and urology, and cardiovascular conditions.

The Mirfulan website lists the company's other brands alongside it, among them Laxbene, JHP Rödler, RhinoPRONT and Recosyn.

## Philosophy & positioning

Mirfulan presents itself as a treatment brand, not a cosmetics label. Its German tagline, "Wirksam bei wunder Haut", translates roughly as "effective on sore skin". The company says it knows how to treat skin "at every age", and its website is arranged by condition rather than by product type.

Those conditions span the whole life course. The site addresses nappy rash in babies and toddlers as well as in adults, intertrigo (the sore, inflamed skin that develops where skin rubs against skin), atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, grazes and cracked skin. Intertrigo is discussed separately for active people, for people who are overweight and for those receiving care at home.

The products are sold through pharmacies. The two zinc oxide products are classed in Germany as pharmacy-only medicines, which means they may be sold only in a pharmacy and carry the standard advice to read the package leaflet and consult a doctor or pharmacist [2].

## Products & innovation

The range consists of three products, each aimed at a different kind of skin problem.

**Mirfulan Wund- und Heilsalbe** (wound and healing ointment) is the brand's core product. Mirfulan calls it the proven zinc ointment from the pharmacy for sore, reddened and irritated skin. Its active ingredient is zinc oxide, and the formula also contains urea, cod liver oil and witch hazel bark. The company claims the ointment works more effectively and faster than a simple zinc ointment [2].

**Mirfulan Spray N** puts a zinc oxide ointment into a spray can. Its active ingredients are zinc oxide, cod liver oil and alpha-bisabolol, and it also contains vitamin A and colecalciferol. The brand's selling point is hygiene: the ointment is applied without touching the skin, can be sprayed upside down to reach awkward areas, and avoids the rubbing that can make application painful. Mirfulan says it also has a cooling effect. It is aimed at incontinence-associated dermatitis, intertrigo, sore skin folds and skin damaged by pressure and friction [3].

**Mirfulan Hydrolind Creme** works differently from the other two. It is classed as a medical device rather than a medicine [4]. The cream is intended for the early treatment of an atopic dermatitis flare-up and for mild symptoms of psoriasis. According to the company, it eases itching, redness and scaling, adds moisture and helps protect the skin from drying out further. Its key ingredient is the natural substance ectoin, at a concentration of 5 percent, which the brand presents as the heart of what it calls the "Hydrolind complex"; urea is also part of the formula. The cream contains no cortisone, fragrance or parabens.

No third-party certifications are documented for any of the three products.

## Recognition

Mirfulan has received coverage mainly in the German pharmacy trade press rather than in consumer beauty media. Beyond the 2013 report on its sales, a 2014 Recordati Pharma announcement published in APOTHEKE ADHOC's industry news section described the ointment as a "classic" and as the preparation most often recommended by paediatricians for nappy rash [10]. That statement came from the company itself, in a release reporting its 2013 results, rather than from an independent survey.

No awards are documented for the brand.

## Current status

Mirfulan is an acquired brand that continues to be marketed by its owner. As of 2026 the official website is live with all three products, each listed with a German pharmaceutical product code, and carries a 2026 copyright notice from Recordati Pharma GmbH [1]. The brand's official presence is limited to Germany, and no social media accounts are linked from its website.
