From 2009 until 2025 the name was carried by its own company, Pharmamedico GmbH, which was run by Knut Schmees [7]. The range mixes products for people, such as a horse-chestnut and arnica "horse balm", with sprays intended for animal care. Pharmamedico is no longer an independent company. In June 2025, Pharmamedico GmbH was merged into Schmees GmbH and removed from the commercial register [7]. The name lives on as a product line of Schmees GmbH, which now issues the Pharmamedico safety data sheets [5]. ## History & milestones When the first Pharmamedico products reached the market has not been documented, and two different dates mark the start of the name. The company Pharmamedico GmbH was registered on 28 December 2009 at the local court in Walsrode, with share capital of €25,000 and Knut Schmees as managing director [7]. Its stated business was the distribution of chemical products, cosmetics and medical devices. The word mark "Pharmamedico" carries a later date, 22 September 2015, and the variant spelling "PHARMA MEDICO" also appears with a 2017 date [7]. The two dates describe different things, a company and a trademark, rather than rival founding stories; this article follows the 2009 registration as the earliest documented use of the name. The company held more than its own name. Its register entry lists several other trademarks, among them CEKAPUR, RUKIS, Panthevera, Violetta and ReAm. The last of these matches the Ream family of brands, such as Ream Med and Ream Clean, that Schmees sells today. In 2020, Linda Schmees was granted power of attorney (Prokura) for the company. The most recent new product under the name came in May 2024, when Schmees Kosmetik presented Pharmamedico Bärenbalsam ("bear balm") in a 200 ml size as new to its range. Just over a year later, a register entry dated 20 June 2025 recorded the merger of Pharmamedico GmbH into Schmees GmbH, after which the smaller company was listed as dissolved [7]. ## Ownership Pharmamedico sits within the Schmees Firmengruppe, the umbrella under which the family's companies are grouped and managed. According to Schmees, the group's foundations were laid in 1954 by Knut Schmees Sr. [2]. The company says it brought the "Chemie- und Kosmetikfabrik Schmees GmbH & Co." into the group in 1971 and "HIT Products GmbH & Co." in 1989. The two were merged in 2001, and the combined business was renamed Schmees GmbH in 2016 [2]. Schmees describes itself as a developer and manufacturer of body-care and hygiene products, and also of car-care products and fertilisers. It makes private-label goods for large retail customers alongside its own brands, which it groups under the headings Body, Home and Garden [1]. The company says it is DEKRA- and IFS HPC-certified and belongs to the German cosmetics and detergents industry association, IKW. Its own brands include Herbamedicus, whose latest product is a foot balm, as well as Ream Med, Klaro Car and Floraline. The wider group also includes Kraftfutter-Meyer, an animal-feed supplier, and Düngemittelwerk Coswig, a fertiliser plant. Because Pharmamedico GmbH and Schmees GmbH were both part of the same group, the 2025 merger was an internal reorganisation rather than a sale to an outside buyer. The change shows in product paperwork. A retailer listing still names Pharmamedico GmbH, Am Bahnhof 76, Twistringen, as the manufacturer of its horse balm [8]. The current safety data sheets name Schmees GmbH at Am Bahnhof 74 in the same town as the supplier [5]. ## Products The best-documented product is Pharmamedico Pferdebalsam zur Hautpflege, a 500 ml "horse balm" for the skin. The retail description presents it as a refreshing, invigorating balm for use after physical effort at work, in sport and at play, to be massaged in with gentle circular movements. Its listed ingredients include menthol, horse chestnut seed extract, camphor, eucalyptus leaf oil and arnica flower extract [8]. Pharmamedico Bärenbalsam, launched in 2024, sits alongside it in a 200 ml size. A third balm, Alpenkräuter Balsam ("alpine herb balm"), is sold in 200 ml tubes. A product-comparison listing describes it as a medicinal product for relaxation that uses alpine herbs to ease muscle tension and the feeling of a cold. It names camphor, peppermint, rosemary oil and eucalyptus oil among the ingredients [9]. That classification comes from the listing's own text and has not been confirmed against the product label. The name also covers animal-care products. The safety data sheet for Pharmamedico Aluminium-Spray identifies it as a spray for veterinary purposes. It is an aerosol based on butane, propane and isopropanol and is classed as extremely flammable [5]. A second sheet covers Pharmamedico Zinkoxid-Salben-Spray, a zinc oxide ointment spray. No third-party certifications are documented for Pharmamedico products themselves. ## Current status Pharmamedico continues as a brand name owned and supplied by Schmees GmbH, but the company that once carried it no longer exists. Schmees Kosmetik's company history does not mention Pharmamedico, and the brand is missing from the brand overview on its products page, although the Pharmamedico safety data sheets remain among its downloads.
