R&H, the Rösch & Handel brand, is an Austrian pharmacy brand whose history begins in 1890 at the Apotheke zur Mutter Gottes, a pharmacy in Vienna [3]. Its range is mostly made up of over-the-counter medicines and medical devices for the household medicine cabinet, such as a wart treatment, remedies for digestive complaints and glycerin suppositories. A smaller group of skin products, including a deer-tallow cream, a deer-tallow stick and a plain petroleum-jelly ointment, gives the brand its place in skin and body care.

R&H is no longer an independent company. The brand and its product range were acquired in 2014 by BANO Healthcare GmbH, an Austrian family business that had handled its distribution since 2012 [4]. It continues today as one of the two brands of that company, alongside BANO Naturprodukte, and is sold mainly through pharmacies.

## Origin & founders

The business that became Rösch & Handel started life under a different name. According to the brand's own history, it operated in 1890 as Gimborn & Zifferer, based at the Apotheke zur Mutter Gottes in Vienna [3]. Several products that the company still sells are said to have been developed there, among them Warzin, a treatment for warts; Helopanflat; silver nitrate caustic sticks; and glycerin suppositories. The company's account also places the compress product EST Essigsaure Tonerde in this early period.

The founders of the 1890 business are not named in the company's history. The present name dates from the early 1950s, when a Dr. Handel joined Gimborn & Zifferer and renamed it Rösch und Handel [3]. His first name is not given, and the person behind the "Rösch" in the name is not identified.

## History & milestones

The company describes the decades after the renaming as its rise to a pharmaceutical business that doctors and pharmacists relied on well beyond Vienna. It names the conditions its products were used for at the time: a lack of stomach acid, enzyme deficiency, warts and other everyday complaints. No further dated milestones are documented for the period between the 1950s and the 2010s.

The modern chapter of the brand is tied to another Austrian pharmacy family. BANO's own history traces its roots to a drugstore that Erzsébet and József Bánó ran in Mezőtúr, Hungary, in the 1930s. It was there that Josef Bano discovered an interest in chemistry; after his studies he opened his own pharmacy in St. Anton am Arlberg in the late 1970s and began selling his own preparations, among them Murmelin sports and joint ointment and an arnica gel. After his death in 2008, Eva Bano took over the brand rights and products in 2009, converted a former wine tavern in Hartberg into a production site in 2010 and hired the first employees in 2011.

From 2012 the Bano business distributed Rösch und Handel products, and in 2014 it bought the brand outright [4]. The combined company was renamed BANO Healthcare GmbH in 2015. Since the takeover, the owner says, its work on Rösch & Handel has focused on bringing the products up to current standards, modernising the brand's look, building its own sales network and introducing quality assurance under ISO 13485:2016 [3]. That standard applies to medical devices, and BANO obtained the certification in 2017. The company redesigned its overall market presence in 2021.

## Ownership

R&H belongs to BANO Healthcare GmbH, which holds the brand rights since the 2014 acquisition [4]. Independent pharmacy listings name BANO Healthcare as the manufacturer and supplier of products sold under the "Rösch & Handel" brand [8]. BANO Healthcare is registered in St. Anton am Arlberg and runs its office in Baden, near Vienna [1].

The company presents itself as "two brands under one roof" [2]. Its sister brand, BANO Naturprodukte, covers natural remedies for complaints such as muscle tension and sunburn. Beyond its own brands, BANO distributes Dallmann's and Wick cough drops and Labisan cold-sore ointment in Austria. It has also developed a plant-based food-supplement line, ApoCare, together with Austrian pharmacists; the line is presented on the Rösch & Handel page, while the company's "About us" page describes it as a BANO initiative.

## Philosophy & positioning

Rösch & Handel uses the tagline "Wirkt aus Tradition", which translates roughly as "works from tradition". The company says its philosophy is to offer traditionally proven pharmaceutical knowledge to a modern standard, and that products are continuously developed further in line with current research and legal requirements. It frames the brand as a one-stop source for the home medicine cabinet, aimed at doctors, pharmacists and consumers alike.

Distribution follows that pharmacy positioning. According to the company, the products are sold in pharmacies in Austria, Germany and Italy and in selected specialist shops, and everything except the licensed medicines can also be ordered through the owner's online shop [3]. At the parent-company level, BANO states that it exports to more than 30 countries.

## Products & innovation

Most of the range sits on the medical side of the pharmacy shelf. Products associated with the brand include Warzin and Schälkur Eidechse intensiv for warts, Rapid for corns, Silverin silver nitrate sticks, EST Essigsaure Tonerde compresses, Helopanflat dragées and glycerin suppositories.

The skin-care items carry the Rösch name on the pack. Hirschtalg Creme Rösch and Hirschtalg Stick Rösch are based on deer tallow. Vaseline Rösch is described by one pharmacy retailer as a protective cream for all skin types and areas, suited to lip care [9]. The same listing names white petroleum jelly as its ingredient and suggests uses such as protecting skin from chafing during cycling or running, shielding the face from wind and cold, and caring for dogs' paws in winter.

Production for BANO Healthcare takes place in Hartberg, Austria, under ISO 13485:2016 certification with annual audits [2]. The parent company also says its formulations are free from parabens and silicone oils, a claim made for its portfolio as a whole rather than for Rösch & Handel specifically.

## Current status

R&H is an acquired brand that remains on the market under BANO Healthcare. Its products, including the deer-tallow cream and stick, the petroleum-jelly ointment and the glycerin suppositories, were listed in the owner's online shop and at Austrian and German online pharmacies as of October 2026. On its news page, BANO has announced that Helopanflat was available again in Austrian pharmacies after a long supply gap [7].
