Sensolar is a Swiss sun-protection brand made by Lifeforce GmbH, a family-owned company that develops and sells pharmacy-style personal-care products. The range centres on sunscreen sprays and creams formulated without emulsifiers, alcohol or nanoparticles, and it has grown to include an after-sun spray, a lip balm, an insect and tick repellent sold as ZeroBite, a magnesium spray for athletes and a seat cream for cyclists and riders.

The brand is aimed at families and at people who spend long hours outdoors, and its marketing leans heavily on sport. It is sold in Swiss pharmacies and drugstores and through the company's own webshop. No founding year for the Sensolar name itself has been published; the owning company was entered in the Swiss commercial register in January 2001.

## Origin & founders

The story Lifeforce tells about itself begins with a set of formulas rather than a founding date. Jürgen, who heads the company's management, writes that when he took over Lifeforce "more than 20 years ago" he built on recipes developed by Dr. Linherr, a biologist and pharmacist [2]. The company does not say who established Lifeforce before him, and Dr. Linherr is credited only with the original formulations, not with founding the firm.

The commercial register gives a firmer anchor. Lifeforce GmbH was registered on 9 January 2001 with the register office of the canton of Schwyz [3]. That date marks the current limited company, not necessarily the start of the business. The current CEO, Severin, describes the company as being carried forward "in the third generation", which suggests a longer family history that the company has not set out in detail.

Jürgen presents himself as a lifelong outdoorsman from central Switzerland: hiking, skiing, golfing and sailing on Lake Lucerne. That personal profile runs through the company's self-description and helps explain why a sunscreen maker puts so much weight on athletes.

## Ownership

Sensolar belongs to Lifeforce GmbH, which operates both the Sensolar website and the older lifeforce.ch webshop. The company calls itself an independent Swiss family business and says it intends to stay that way. In Severin's words, Lifeforce "remains a Swiss family company: independent, responsible" and focused on quality [2]. No outside investor, parent group or acquisition is documented.

Lifeforce describes its wider business as the development, production and distribution of parapharmaceutical products, a term for pharmacy-sold goods that are not medicines. Its stated fields are cosmetics, sun protection, food supplements and micronutrients. Sensolar is the company's main consumer brand, and ZeroBite repellent is marketed alongside it on the same site.

### Headquarters

Two locations appear for the company. Lifeforce's own team page and legal notice give its seat as Küssnacht am Rigi in the canton of Schwyz [3]. Two 2017 articles on marktindex.ch, a Swiss business-directory portal that profiles companies, placed Lifeforce in Rotkreuz in the canton of Zug and listed an address there [7]. The Rotkreuz address most likely reflects an earlier office. When or why the company moved has not been made public.

## Philosophy & positioning

Sensolar's central idea is what it leaves out. The company says it uses no emulsifiers in its sunscreens, no alcohol that further dries the skin, and no nanoparticles [1]. Emulsifiers are the ingredients that keep oil and water blended in a cream. Without them, the spray separates into two layers and has to be shaken before each use, which the brand presents as a feature: a "two-phase formulation" that it says balances protection with skin comfort.

The reasoning behind this, as Lifeforce explains it, is that alcohol and emulsifiers can increase irritation from sunscreen filters and may help carry those filters into the skin rather than leaving them on the surface. The company also says its products are pH neutral. The 2017 marktindex.ch coverage repeated these points and put the spray's pH at 7.0.

A second theme is a sceptical view of very high sun protection factors. Both the brand and the portal articles argue that the difference between mid-range and high SPF values is small. The brand's product site states that SPF 15 blocks about 93 percent of UV rays and SPF 50 about 98 percent, and stresses that most people apply too little sunscreen to reach the labelled protection at all. It repeats the common rule of 2 milligrams per square centimetre of skin, which it translates into roughly 16 to 18 millilitres for the arms and legs of an adult. A 2017 article on marktindex.ch made the same case, noting that higher factors can bring more skin reactions for some people [8].

In its own words, Lifeforce stands for "functional quality products for sport and family, free of problematic ingredients for people and the environment". A sales manager on the team page sums up the brand as Swiss quality, clear product properties and high practicality. The homepage opens with the headline "Kompromissloser Schutz" ("Uncompromising Protection") and describes the range as protection for the whole family.

## Products & innovation

### Sunscreens

The core of the range is Sensolar Sonnenschutz, a sunscreen spray now sold at SPF 50 in sizes from 20 to 400 millilitres, with SPF 15 and SPF 30 versions also offered. In 2017 the spray was described as SPF 25 in a pump bottle, with pharmacy codes listed for SPF 25 and SPF 15 bottles. The brand says the formula suits all skin types, including very sensitive skin, and can be used on the scalp and hair. It is described as water- and sweat-resistant, and the company says it has been tested by professionals under extreme conditions.

The spray contains glycerin, for moisture, and wheat germ oil with vitamin E. Lifeforce says it absorbs up to 98.3 percent of UVB rays using photostable filters, meaning filters that do not break down quickly in sunlight [1]. It also says the product helps to prevent "Mallorca acne", a popular name for a type of sun allergy that causes small bumps on the skin.

A newer line, Sensolar more than SPF, adds a face cream with SPF 30 marketed for anti-ageing. According to the company, it combines sun filters with niacinamide and vitamin C and protects against infrared and blue light as well as UV. The brand presents it as free of PEGs, silicones, nanotechnology, EDTA and parabens. Sport sets pair the sunscreens with other products at SPF 30 and SPF 50.

### After-sun and lip care

The Sensolar After-Sun spray is also a two-phase formula to be shaken before use. It contains aloe vera, provitamin B5, and avocado and macadamia oils, and the company suggests keeping it in the refrigerator. Its published ingredient list shows that it differs from the sunscreens on some points: it includes parfum (fragrance), cyclopentasiloxane, a silicone, and disodium EDTA [6]. The brand's "fragrance-free" and "emulsifier-free" claims are made for the sunscreen formulas rather than for every product in the range.

The Sensolar Lip Balm combines UVA and UVB filters with organic edelweiss extract from the Swiss mountains. It also contains tea tree and coconut oil, which the company says help soothe and prevent cold sores, and it has a honey flavour.

### Beyond sun care

ZeroBite is an insect and tick repellent based on icaridin, an active ingredient used in many repellents, at 20 grams per 100 grams. The company claims four hours of protection against ticks and eight hours against mosquitoes, and says independent comparison tests have confirmed this [1]. A children's version is sold separately. Lifeforce notes that the World Health Organization recommends icaridin for malaria prevention. It also says the formula can be used on animal fur as well as skin, and contains no essential oils.

The Sensolar Magnesium [Active] Oil Spray is sold for sport. Despite the name, it is not an oil; the brand explains that the liquid simply feels slightly oily, which makes it suited to massage before competition or during recovery. A Sensolar seat cream is aimed at cyclists, riders and rowers. It contains organic edelweiss and deer tallow and, according to the brand, no parabens or mineral oils.

## Recognition

The company lists a group of Swiss athletes as Sensolar ambassadors, among them the tennis player Dominic Stricker, the rower Roman Röösli, the beach volleyball player Zoé Vergé-Dépré and the mountain bikers Alessandra Keller and Aline Seitz [4]. These are the brand's own sponsorship arrangements. In February 2025 it announced a co-sponsorship with MS Sports covering cycling and outdoor activities [5]. No awards or third-party certifications for Sensolar are documented.

## Current status

Sensolar is active. Its webshop runs in German, French, Italian and English with prices in Swiss francs, and the team page lists current sales staff for the German- and French-speaking parts of Switzerland. The homepage social feed shows posts from 2024 through mid-2026, and the most recent blog post dates from February 2025.

Lifeforce says its products are made in Switzerland and the European Union and distributed worldwide, and speaks of a growing Swiss and cross-border customer base. Retail distribution outside Switzerland has not been independently confirmed.
