Sulmona Essenza is an Italian niche perfume house based in Sulmona, a town in the Abruzzo region known for its long tradition of making confetti, sugar-coated almonds. The brand began in 2008 with a single perfume meant to capture the smell of those sweets, created by its founder, Barbara Traficante [2]. That first scent still anchors the line, which has since grown to a small family of sweet, dessert-like fragrances.

The company remains active. It runs its own Italian-language online shop and lists a network of official retailers, and in 2026 it was presenting a new extrait, Animarubra, as its latest release [1].

## Origin & founders

The brand's origin story is a childhood memory. Traficante has described leaving Sulmona's confetti shops as a girl and loving the brief moment of being wrapped in the smell of almond and vanilla. She says she spent years looking for a fragrance that would bring that feeling back, failed to find one, and decided that only she could reproduce it. In her account, she devoted her free time from 2008 onward to the project, with the stated aim of enclosing "the soul of my city" in a perfume [2].

The town itself is central to the brand's identity. The company's history page describes Sulmona as the birthplace of the Latin poet Ovid and as a historic centre of confetti production, and the fragrance was named after the town rather than after its maker. The name "Sulmona Essenza", together with the description "the original perfume of the confetti of Sulmona", is registered as a trademark, according to the company.

Fragrantica's 2023 profile of the house tells the same story in Traficante's own words and identifies her as the owner of Sulmona Essenza [6]. The business trades as Sulmona Essenza srls, a small Italian company registered in Sulmona. No parent company, outside investors or acquisitions are documented.

## History & milestones

For most of its history the brand was, in practice, a single-perfume house. The original eau de parfum, also called Sulmona Essenza and often referred to simply as the confetto perfume, was the only fragrance in the line for roughly fifteen years.

During that period the scent itself did not change, but its packaging did. The company says the bottle was restyled and graphically updated several times between 2008 and 2026, describing the changes as a way of following shifts in design taste and the brand's own growth while keeping the fragrance "faithful to its identity" [2]. Fragrantica made the same point independently in 2023, noting that the bottle had changed its shape while the smell had stayed the same.

The first expansion came in 2023. That year the house presented three new fragrances, Ciocomenta, Cubano and Gocce di Melit, all built in the gourmand style, the fragrance family based on edible, dessert-like notes such as vanilla, chocolate and honey [6]. Fragrantica framed the trio as a continuation of the founder's love of sweets and placed the launches within a wider gourmand trend that the writer described as especially strong in Italy.

A fifth perfume, Animarubra, followed later. As of October 2026 the brand's homepage showed it as its "new fragrance", under the line "il peccato che indossi" ("the sin you wear"). The company has not published a launch year for it.

## Philosophy & positioning

Sulmona Essenza presents itself as a maker of niche and artisanal fragrances, and in its own business description calls itself a house of haute parfumerie founded in 2008 [1]. Its homepage carries the tagline "i sogni possono diventare realtà" ("dreams can come true") and the line "since 2008 our signature is quality".

The flagship is positioned in strongly personal terms. According to the company, it is "the only and authentic" perfume of the Sulmona confetto. The brand says the scent follows no fashions or trends and is "discreet, never excessive", with what it calls a gently childlike soul. The same text describes it as evoking purity, elegance and sensuality, and as feminine. In the brand's words, the perfume lets itself be discovered only by those who can grasp its essence, and it calls the scent "naively provocative". Fragrantica's 2023 article reproduces much of this self-description in English.

Rather than covering a wide range of styles, the house has stayed close to one idea. Each of the later perfumes takes a sweet or edible theme, such as chocolate, rum or honey, and pairs it with a contrasting fresh, spicy or woody element. The fragrance review site ScentVerdict summarises the line as Italian niche gourmands inspired by Sulmona's confetti tradition and describes the scents as feminine-leaning and discreet rather than overpowering [8].

## Products

The range is small. The brand's online shop lists five full-size perfumes, travel sizes of four of them, a discovery kit of five 2 ml samples, and a few gift items such as a scented shopping bag with a pearl handle [3].

**Sulmona Essenza** (2008) is the original confetto perfume. Fragrantica lists its notes as almond, sweet orange and bergamot at the top; orange blossom, jasmine, ylang-ylang and rose at the heart; and Tahitian vanilla and musk at the base. The magazine likened it to candied almonds glazed with candied orange and lemon.

**Ciocomenta** (2023) combines spicy mint and cocoa with iris, chocolate and almond over a vetiver base. Fragrantica called it the woodiest, greenest and least sweet of the line, an aromatic chypre with a gourmand touch. The brand itself describes it as a perfume of contrasts, in which fresh, crunchy mint meets a dusting of cocoa before iris and the rougher notes of vetiver take over.

**Cubano** (2023) pairs white chocolate and cinnamon with rum, cocoa and liqueur notes, resting on tonka bean and musk. The Fragrantica reviewer compared it to pralines with a boozy filling and named it her favourite of the three 2023 releases. The company's own description speaks of chocolate melting into liqueur and rum, recreating an intimate, mysterious atmosphere, and calls the scent "a ritual for connoisseurs".

**Gocce di Melit** (2023) is a honey fragrance. According to Fragrantica, it sets chestnut honey against spicy ginger and a creamy chestnut note, with a dry-down shaded by turmeric. The brand presents it as "a concert of opposing notes", built on the meeting of lively ginger and the warm, soft character of chestnut honey.

**Animarubra** is the newest addition. The brand sells it as an Extrait de Parfum in a 50 ml bottle [1], a concentration usually stronger than eau de parfum. ScentVerdict, however, lists Animarubra as an eau de toilette [8]. The brand's own product page address also refers to it as an eau de parfum, so its concentration is not described consistently across sources; this article follows the label used on the brand's shop.

The company says it sells through its own e-shop and through official retailers and boutiques, and it offers marketing material to stockists on request [4]. ScentVerdict adds that the line is distributed mainly through specialist niche retailers and sample sites. No manufacturing location, certifications or sustainability commitments are documented.

## Recognition

Sulmona Essenza has received limited but specific press attention. The most detailed coverage is an October 2023 Niche Perfumery article on Fragrantica by Sandra Raičević Petrović, which reviewed the three 2023 launches alongside the original 2008 perfume and quoted Traficante at length [6].

In its home town, the confetto perfume featured at the Notte Blu della Cultura, a cultural evening held in Sulmona on 7 and 8 August 2026. There, the artistic-perfumery project Museolfattivo presented an olfactory journey linking Istanbul, Paris and Italy in the Cappella del Corpo di Cristo. The local broadcaster Onda Tv reported that the Sulmona Essenza confetto perfume drew particular success among the fragrances shown, and that visitors appreciated recognising a symbol of the town through scent [7]. No awards are documented.

## Current status

Sulmona Essenza is active. As of October 2026 its online shop listed twelve products, its homepage promoted Animarubra as a new fragrance, and its history page referred to bottle redesigns running up to 2026 [1]. The brand also maintains an Instagram account under the name sulmonaessenza. The most recent independent coverage is the Onda Tv report of August 2026. The company remains associated with its founder, Barbara Traficante, and with the town of Sulmona.
