Synomed is a German manufacturer of dietary supplements based in Elmshorn, a town in Schleswig-Holstein near Hamburg. Founded in 1983, the company describes itself as a specialist in orthomolecular products and nutritional supplements, meaning preparations built around vitamins, minerals, amino acids and other micronutrients taken by mouth [2]. It is not a cosmetics brand in the conventional sense. Its place in the beauty field comes from ingestible products aimed at hair, skin and nails, which sit alongside a much wider range covering digestion, the immune system, energy metabolism and other areas of general health.

The company develops and produces its supplements in-house in northern Germany and sells them under the Synomed name and several product brands, including Blutello®, Enterobact®, Pankreazym® and Basis CELL aktiv® plus. It holds a food-safety management certification and promotes recyclable and certified packaging. In 2021 it recalled a range of tablet products after an ingredient supplied to it was found to be contaminated [11]. The company remains active.

## Origin & history

Synomed GmbH was founded in 1983. According to the company's own account, it has specialised in making orthomolecular products and dietary supplements, produced in line with current scientific findings and legal requirements [2]. A German business directory gives the same founding year [12]. The founders are not named in public company information.

The company's history is otherwise thinly documented. Its homepage refers to more than 40 years of experience, which is consistent with the 1983 founding date. Beyond that anniversary framing and the 2021 product recall, few dated milestones are publicly recorded.

## Ownership

Synomed operates as a limited-liability company (GmbH) registered in the commercial register of the district court in Pinneberg. Its legal notice names Hans-Joachim Petereit as managing director; he is not described as a founder [6]. No parent company or group affiliation is documented, and there is no public record of acquisitions.

The company's address is given slightly differently depending on the source. Synomed's own legal notice lists its headquarters as Flamweg 134, 25335 Elmshorn [6]. A German business directory and the 2021 recall notice published by a pharmacy trade outlet give the address as Flamweg 132–134 in the same town [12]. The difference concerns only the street-number range; both place the company in Elmshorn.

## Philosophy & positioning

Synomed frames its work around long-term wellbeing. "Our goal is that you stay vital," the company writes on its About page, adding that it aims to combine traditional knowledge with modern technology and current scientific findings. Its tagline, "Weil wir natürlich sind" ("Because we are natural"), appears on the page explaining its orthomolecular approach [4].

On its homepage the brand sums up its values in three points: scientific product development, high-quality ingredients and production in Germany. It also states that all of its products and ingredients are developed without animal testing and without genetic engineering [1]. These are the company's own statements; no third-party cruelty-free certification is documented.

Quality control is a recurring theme in how Synomed presents itself. The company says all of its products are checked regularly by an independent, certified laboratory, and that it has been audited and certified to the DIN EN ISO 22000:2018 standard for food-safety management by an independent service provider [2]. Its About page also refers to a TÜV certification of its food-safety management system.

## Products & innovation

The Synomed range is organised by area of use. Its website groups products under headings such as digestion, women's health, pregnancy, thyroid, eyes, liver, the immune system, muscles, bones and the acid–base balance. Three of these areas are directly relevant to beauty: hair, skin and fingernails.

On its hair page, the company presents hair as both a protective and an aesthetic feature, and says that dry or flaky hair and hair loss can reflect a one-sided diet or a weakened immune system. Its skin page makes a similar case, saying that a lack of important micronutrients can become visible in the complexion. The products listed in these areas include selenium capsules sold as Basis-Selen, probiotic capsules under the Enterobact® name and hair capsules, which the homepage promotes "for beautiful, strong and shiny hair".

Probiotics are a substantial part of the catalogue, which draws on bacterial cultures such as Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium and Enterococcus strains. The Enterobact® line includes variants such as Enterobact® HIS capsules and a children's version, Enterobact® Kind plus. Other featured products include Basis-aktiv 28, a pairing of Enterobact metabolic with apple pectin that the company calls an energy-metabolism duo, and a B-complex capsule containing all eight B vitamins plus betaine, choline and inositol. For that capsule, the company notes that its vitamin B6 dose exceeds the upper intake levels set for children and adolescents by the European Food Safety Authority, and it labels the product as unsuitable for anyone under 18.

Blutello® is one of the named brands within the range. According to Synomed, its Blutello® plus kombucha tea extract formula contains soy flour, soy lecithin, malt extract and kombucha powder, together with iron, which the company highlights for its role in forming haemoglobin [10].

Several products carry label notes stating that they are free of lactose, yeast or colourings, are gluten-free and contain no preservatives as defined by law, and some are marked vegan. These statements apply to individual products rather than the whole range, which also includes gelatine tablets.

## Sustainability

Synomed's sustainability statements centre on packaging. The company says its packaging is FSC-certified and that it uses cartons made from grass paper, compostable packing fill made from corn starch, and PET containers that it describes as 100 per cent recyclable [3]. According to the company, an empty PET tub is not waste but can be put to other uses after the product is finished.

## Controversies

In August 2021 Synomed recalled various batches and pack sizes of its supplements. According to a report in the German pharmacy trade publication APOTHEKE ADHOC, the company's European supplier had warned that the calcium carbonate used in a number of preparations could be contaminated with ethylene oxide, and testing confirmed the contamination in some batches [11].

The recall covered products including Acibucha, AlkaDirekt, Alkamed, Alkamed plus, Anis-Fenchel, Antiox, Biotin, Chrom + Vit. C, Colovit, Folsäure, Gelatine, Grünlipp tablets, a multivitamin and mineral product, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. Pharmacies were asked to return affected stock through their wholesalers, while those supplied directly by Synomed were to be contacted by the company and could send products back for a refund [11].

## Current status

Synomed is active. It runs a German-language online shop with a current product catalogue, offers a separate registration area for healthcare professionals and supplies pharmacies both through wholesalers and directly. Its website carried a 2026 copyright notice.
