Whiskey River Soap Co. is an American maker of handmade bar soap and soy candles based in Newark, Ohio. The company is known less for its scents than for its labels: products are named after types of people, moods and everyday irritations, from "Soap for Introverts" to "Soap for Grammar Police", and many of the names use profanity or adult jokes. Alongside soap and candles, it sells room sprays, air fresheners, lip balm tins, matchbooks, greeting cards and other novelty goods.

The brand is active. Its online shop carried new seasonal collections and products in 2026, and production and the wholesale office are both in Newark.

## Origin and founders

The company does not give a founding year or name its founders in any public account of its history. Its homepage, as of 2026, refers to more than ten years of making soaps and candles by hand in Newark, Ohio [1]. That gives a rough sense of the brand's age but no exact date.

The brand's own origin story is a joke. Its "About Us" page claims the company was founded "more than fourteen million years ago" near Ancient Rome by gladiators, stray dogs and out-of-work magicians, bonded by a half-used tube of superglue, before abandoning the tale with "Okay, maybe not" [2]. The staff page, titled "Meet the Idiots", continues in the same vein. It says only that "The Great Leader founded Whiskey River for the lunch breaks" and that the remaining staff work there because of a legal settlement [3]. Neither page is meant as history, and neither identifies a founder by name.

Where the products are made has shifted in published accounts. The company's current homepage places production in Newark. A 2017 post on the men's lifestyle blog Mensgear described the soap, candles, bath bombs and journals as made in Granville, Ohio, just east of Columbus [10]. The two towns are in the same part of the state, and the accounts are about nine years apart, so the brand may simply have moved.

## Philosophy and positioning

Whiskey River Soap Co. presents itself as a maker first and a joke shop second. The company says it creates its own products locally because it is "not just selling you a funny label wrapped around something mass-produced in China", and that it believes quality and humour can sit together [2]. My Modern Met picked up the same line in 2017, describing the mix of humour and quality products as the driving force behind the brand.

The labels are the main draw. Each product carries a name and a short tagline that pokes fun at a type of person or situation. In a 2017 gift feature, Bustle listed soaps for introverts, writers with writer's block, stoners, "Debbie Downers", frenemies, online daters, hoarders and middle children. The magazine noted that the company also targets foodies, coffee addicts, musicians, "crazy exes" and Canadians [8]. Bustle summed up the likely customer as someone who can take a joke and likes to poke fun at others and themselves. It also stressed that the company makes its soap by hand and pours its own soy candles, rather than selling cheap novelty gifts.

The humour runs through the company's own pages, too. The usage directions in its FAQ advise customers to "rinse, lather, repeat" and not to eat the soap, before switching to standard safety advice about rashes and irritation.

## Products

### Soap

Bar soap is the company's core line. According to its FAQ, the basic formula, which is printed on every label, is made from coconut oil, palm oil, safflower oil, glycerine, purified water, sodium hydroxide, sorbitol, sorbitan oleate, soy bean protein, colouring and fragrance. Some soaps contain extras such as glitter [4]. Because each bar is handmade, the company says no two look exactly alike.

The shop now lists classic bar soap, a triple-milled boxed bar, a "WTF" soap line, astrology soaps, fruit slice soap bars in flavours such as Key Lime and Tangerine, and a "Do Not Eat" soap range. Titles such as Soap for The Middle Child, Soap for Grammar Police and Soap for Stoners were already on sale in 2017 and are still listed. Soap for Zero Fucks appears among the top sellers on the homepage, and newer titles include Soap for Teacher of the Year.

My Modern Met wrote in 2017 that the bars avoid conventional scent names such as jasmine or eucalyptus. Instead they offer "scents" such as Hipsters, said to smell of "coffee, bacon, and craft beer", along with Writer's Block, Geeks, Bombshells and Dad Bods [9].

### Candles and home goods

Candles have become as prominent as the soap. The company says its candles are 100% soy wax with added colour and fragrance. Several of the homepage's top-selling items are candles with profane names, including Fuck This Candle, A Candle for Fucking Meetings and What The Actual Fuck Candle. Several soap titles also have a matching candle, such as A Candle for The Middle Child.

The candle range is split into lines including classic and "WTF" candles, astrology and "Sexy Zodiac" candles, "Coming Up Roses" candles, paint-can-style candles, emergency candle tins and candles with hidden fortunes. Around these sit room sprays, air fresheners, matchbooks, lip balm tins, coloured pencils, pens, stickers, puzzles, awareness bands and greeting cards. Bath bombs and small journals were part of the range in 2017.

### Ethics

The company says all of its soaps and candles are handmade, vegan and cruelty-free [4]. These are the company's own statements. No third-party certification, such as Leaping Bunny, is documented.

## Distribution

Whiskey River Soap Co. sells directly through its own online shop and to independent retailers through wholesale. Shops that want to stock the products are directed to a regional sales representative or a wholesale enquiry form, handled from the company's office on West Main Street in Newark [5]. The website also has a "Where to Buy" page. The company warns online customers that orders do not ship immediately because the products are made by hand.

## Recognition

The brand drew a burst of online press in September 2017. Bustle ran a gift feature built around Soap for Introverts [8]. My Modern Met published a design piece on the joke "scent" names [9], and Mensgear posted a short item on what it called "Whiskey River Sarcastic Soaps". All three are general-interest or lifestyle outlets rather than beauty trade titles. No awards are documented.

## Current status

Whiskey River Soap Co. is active as of 2026. Its homepage featured a summer 2026 collection and a June 2026 menu, and new products continued to appear in the shop, including a "Wild Caught Sardines Lip Balm Tin" added in June 2026 [7]. Production and the wholesale office remain in Newark, Ohio. Sales are run mainly in the United States, through the webshop and through retail stores served by sales representatives.
