Midsona AB
2 brands · founded 1892 · SwedenMidsona AB is a Swedish publicly listed consumer-goods group, headquartered in Malmö, that develops, manufactures and markets organic, plant-based and health-food products. It traces its origin to 1892 [6] and today operates across the Nordic region and continental Europe, selling chiefly through a portfolio of proprietary brands complemented by a smaller set of licensed ones.
Most of the group's brands sit in organic food and consumer health, but the portfolio also reaches into beauty and personal care through Urtekram, whose Urtekram Nordic Beauty line covers organic skin- and hair-care. The company is listed on Nasdaq Stockholm and reports operations spanning Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, France, Spain and Germany.
History & milestones
The business dates back to 1892, when its earliest predecessor, the Sonesson trading house, was founded [6]. For much of its modern history it traded under names carrying the Sonesson family name, including AB Wilh. Sonesson and later Midelfart Sonesson AB after a merger with the Norwegian Midelfart group.
The current identity was adopted in 2010: shareholders voted on 7 December 2010 to rename the company Midsona [2], a contraction of the Midelfart and Sonesson names. Under that name the group narrowed its focus toward organic and health-oriented consumer goods and, over the following decade, expanded well beyond its Nordic base into continental Europe.
Portfolio & brands
Midsona holds a range of proprietary brands weighted toward organic and plant-based food. Among the best known are the Nordic organic labels Urtekram and Kung Markatta, the Norwegian brand Helios, and Friggs, alongside Davert in Germany and the French and Spanish brands Celnat, Vegetalia and Happy Bio. The group describes its offer as "a portfolio of proprietary brands complemented by licensed brands, with an emphasis on plant-based and organic foods." [3]
The portfolio's main link to beauty runs through Urtekram, acquired with its parent company in 2015. Under the Urtekram Nordic Beauty name, the brand markets certified-organic personal-care products such as skin and hair care, extending the group's organic positioning from food into cosmetics.
Acquisitions & strategy
Acquisitions have been central to Midsona's growth since it adopted its current name. In July 2015 it bought the Danish organic-food company Urtekram International A/S, a move that established the group in Denmark and brought the Urtekram brand into its portfolio [2]. In 2018 it acquired Davert GmbH of Germany, beginning an expansion into the rest of Europe [2]. The following year, in 2019, Midsona acquired Alimentation Santé SAS, establishing a presence in France and Spain and adding the Celnat, Vegetalia and Happy Bio brands [2].
Taken together, these deals extended the group from a Nordic organic-foods company into a pan-European one, consistently built around the organic and plant-based theme.
