Summary

Overview

Abercrombie & Fitch is an American apparel and lifestyle retailer founded in 1892 [1], traded on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker ANF. Within beauty, the company is known almost entirely for its fragrance line, built around the men's cologne Fierce, which it has marketed since 2002. The brand is active: it reported record annual sales of $5.3 billion in 2025 [1] and continues to expand its retail strategy.

The company began in New York as an outfitter for outdoor enthusiasts and only became a fragrance and lifestyle name generations later. Its scent business is closely tied to the wider story of the brand, from its presence in American shopping malls in the 2000s to the turnaround that reshaped it in the late 2010s.

Origin and founders

David T. Abercrombie established the original outdoor specialty retailer in Manhattan in 1892, with Ezra Fitch later joining as a partner and giving the company its lasting name [3]. In its early decades the firm outfitted outdoor pursuits, and its histories note a clientele that included Theodore Roosevelt and Ernest Hemingway. The company was incorporated in New York in 1904 and opened a Madison Avenue flagship in 1917.

History and milestones

Abercrombie & Fitch passed through several owners during the twentieth century. After filing for bankruptcy in 1976, it was acquired by Oshman's Sporting Goods in 1978 [1], and then by The Limited, later known as L Brands, in 1988 [3]. It was spun off as a publicly traded company in 1996.

The brand expanded its house of labels around the turn of the century, launching abercrombie kids in 1998 and the Hollister brand in 2000. Its best-known beauty product arrived in 2002 with Fierce, which went on to record more than $200 million in sales [4] and became, in the company's own framing, the signature scent of the Abercrombie & Fitch brand.

In 2017 Fran Horowitz was appointed chief executive, beginning a turnaround during a low point for the business. A major rebrand followed in 2019, the year the company says it surpassed $2 billion in sales; the same year it relaunched Fierce through a campaign called #FaceYourFierce [4].

Ownership

Abercrombie & Fitch is an independent public company listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Its corporate parent, Abercrombie & Fitch Co., operates several labels, including the namesake brand, abercrombie kids and Hollister. Earlier in its history it was owned by Oshman's Sporting Goods from 1978 and by The Limited, later L Brands, from 1988, before the 1996 spin-off.

Philosophy and positioning

The company frames itself around self-acceptance and personal identity. Its stated corporate purpose is, in its own words, "We are here for you on the journey to being and becoming who you are," and it describes its products as part of a customer's path of becoming. Business press has tied this repositioning to a shift in audience: under Horowitz, Marketing Week reported, the brand moved from one "that targeted a small number of teenagers to one that appeals to working millennials" [6].

Products and innovation

The brand's beauty presence centres on fragrance. Fierce, a woody aromatic men's cologne, was created by perfumers Christophe Laudamiel and Bruno Jovanovic and built on notes including fir, sage, oakmoss and sandalwood [4]. The wider catalogue also includes a women's fragrance, "8," which is described alongside Fierce as a signature scent of the brand.

Fierce is as notable for how it was sold as for the scent itself. The company diffused the cologne throughout its stores and onto its clothing, investing more than $3 million in automated scent-spraying machines for its flagships. In a 2019 interview, Laudamiel described the cologne's reach in the 2000s: "between 2003 and 2008, if you found yourself in a mall anywhere in the world, you probably got a whiff," and added, "Like the taste of Coca-Cola, Fierce is iconic" [5]. When the company relaunched the scent in 2019, its president called it "this iconic fragrance."

Sustainability

The company's environmental and labour commitments are set at the corporate, apparel-business level rather than for its fragrance line specifically. It announced a set of "2025 Sustainability Targets" in 2019, has been a member of the UN Global Compact since 2019, and adopted Science Based Targets initiative commitments in 2024 [2]. Its corporate disclosures list no cosmetics-specific certifications.

Controversies

Abercrombie & Fitch has been the subject of several legal cases and public disputes. In 2004 it agreed to a class-action settlement in González v. Abercrombie & Fitch, paying $40 million over alleged racial and gender discrimination in hiring. In 2015 the United States Supreme Court ruled 8–1 against the company in EEOC v. Abercrombie & Fitch, a case over the rejection of a Muslim job applicant, Samantha Elauf, who wore a hijab.

The brand also faced an exclusionary-marketing backlash in 2013, after remarks attributed to then-CEO Mike Jeffries about targeting "the good-looking, cool kids" resurfaced; he later apologised. In 2023, Jeffries faced allegations of orchestrating a sex trafficking operation during the years 2008 to 2015; the company said it was "horrified and disgusted" and stated it had no knowledge of the alleged conduct during his tenure [3].

Current status

The brand is active and operating globally. Abercrombie & Fitch Co. reported its eleventh consecutive quarter of growth in 2026, and in June of that year began selling third-party shoe brands, including Sperry, Hunter and Puma, as part of its growth strategy [9]. Its fragrance line, led by Fierce, remains in production.

The packet records a minor discrepancy over the company's headquarters. Wikipedia gives the current campus as New Albany, Ohio [3], while the company's own corporate pages describe a 1988 relocation to Columbus, Ohio, and list Columbus among its home offices [1]; New Albany is a Columbus suburb, so both refer to the same metropolitan area.
