Summary

Overview

Acca Kappa is an independent, family-owned Italian beauty house based in Treviso, in the Veneto region. It was founded in 1869 by Hermann Krüll and began as a maker of fine brushes and toothbrushes before expanding, more than a century later, into fragrance, body care and grooming [1]. The company name is a quiet play on its founder's initials: H and K, read aloud in Italian, become "Acca" and "Kappa" [5].

Still run by the Krüll family more than 150 years on, the brand has built its identity around the idea of artisan craftsmanship turned into everyday objects, marketed under the tagline "Vanities, Made in Veneto." It remains active, with boutiques and retailers across Europe, Asia and the Americas and an expanding product range under fourth-generation leadership.

Origin and founders

The business traces its start to 1869, when Hermann Krüll, described in editorial accounts as a young Prussian merchant, settled in Treviso and established what would become Acca Kappa [6]. (One trade feature instead calls him German; the two descriptions are consistent, as Prussia was a German state [7].) His early focus was the manufacture of fine toothbrushes and brushes, using materials imported from East Asia to raise quality.

In 1899, Krüll acquired all the shares of the local brush factory, the Premiata Fabbrica Spazzole Trevigiana, consolidating the operation under his own name; the legal entity is still recorded as H. Krüll & C. S.p.A. [5]. A first catalogue followed in 1905, listing 25 brush models.

History and milestones

For its first decades Acca Kappa was, above all, a brushmaker, and according to one heritage account it grew into Italy's most successful toothbrush manufacturer while also serving as a brush supplier to the British Royal Family [6]. The company says its collections passed through successive eras with their own materials and forms, from silver brushes in the early 1900s to an ebony collection in the 1940s and later wood-based ranges. The family history was also marked by the two world wars, in which, by the brand's own account, two of its members lost their lives.

The decisive shift beyond brushes came in 1997, when the house presented its first perfume and moved into fragrance and personal care [6]. That expansion eventually brought body and hair products, shaving foams, soaps and combs alongside the original brush lines. In 2019 the company marked its 150th anniversary and released a limited-edition version of its Infinito brush.

Ownership

Acca Kappa describes itself as an "independent family business devoted to quality, authenticity, and integrity," and no parent company is recorded; ownership has remained with the founding family throughout its history [1]. Leadership now sits with Elisa Gera-Krüll. The company's own about page describes her as representing the fourth generation of the family [1], while its US heritage site and a trade profile describe her instead as Hermann Krüll's great-granddaughter [5][7]; the precise degree of descent varies by source.

Philosophy and positioning

The house frames its work as turning craftsmanship into beauty, stating that "all our products are born from the combination of personality, craftsmanship, and passion" and setting itself the aim of "timeless elegance, faithful to the vision of Hermann Krüll." It summarises its purpose as a wish to "transform our passion into art" through "the pursuit of excellence."

Positioning is built almost entirely on its "Made in Italy" origins and its long brushmaking lineage. A trade spotlight described the brand as a luxury "Made in Italy" house combining "German precision with Italian artistry" — a framing that echoes its Prussian-born founder and Veneto home. Pricing is harder to pin to a single tier: one men's-grooming review noted products available from as little as £7 and called the brand accessible rather than ultra-luxury [6].

Products and innovation

Acca Kappa's catalogue spans fragrance, face and body care, beard and shaving products, toothpastes and toothbrushes, and the hair brushes that remain its signature. Its best-known scent is White Moss (Muschio Bianco), a unisex fragrance that has long served as the brand's most recognised perfume. The fragrance range, sold as eau de parfum and eau de cologne, includes scents such as Dolce Treviso and Sakura Tokyo, the latter inspired by cherry blossom.

On the brush side, the house promotes the Infinito, made with natural bristles and nylon monofilaments, among a line it says now runs to more than 100 hair brushes built with both traditional techniques and newer materials. The brand also points to sustainability in this category, saying it uses FSC-certified wood for its Nature collection so that timber comes from responsibly managed forests, and it has signalled a forthcoming "Bio" line described as fully biodegradable.

Recognition

Beyond its long-standing royal-supplier history, Acca Kappa has drawn heritage-focused press coverage. The men's-grooming title Ape to Gentleman profiled its brush- and toothbrush-making history and its royal supplier status, and the Daily Front Row's Fashion Week Daily ran a spotlight describing it as a luxury Italian beauty brand.

Current status

Acca Kappa remains an active, independent house operating from Treviso under fourth-generation family leadership. Recent activity includes the anniversary relaunch of the Infinito brush, a new smaller fragrance size, and the planned biodegradable Bio line, alongside continued expansion through boutiques in cities including Venice, Milan, Shanghai and Tokyo and retailers across several countries.
