Summary

Overview

Acqua di Genova is an Italian fragrance house founded in Genoa in 1853 [1]. Its founding product, an eau de cologne built on a Mediterranean citrus-and-floral structure, has been made along broadly the same lines since the mid-nineteenth century and remains the brand's defining work. The house traces its origins to the Genoese distiller and perfumer Stefano Frecceri, who created the cologne for the Royal House of Savoy.

Today the brand is produced and managed by Intercosma West S.A.S., a Genoa-based cosmetics and perfume company that lists Acqua di Genova among the historic names in its portfolio [4]. The cologne is still in production and was described by Italian press in October 2024 as readily available in quality perfumeries [12].

Origin and founders

According to the company, Acqua di Genova was established in 1853 by Stefano Frecceri, a Genoese distiller and perfumer, who developed it for the Savoy royal household. Editorial sources repeat the same attribution: a 2021 fragrance review and a 2024 Italian cultural article both date the cologne to 1853 and credit Frecceri as its creator.

The brand frames the original formula as a product of nineteenth-century Italy that it has tried to keep close to its first composition. Intercosma West describes Acqua di Genova as "an ancient jewel with nineteenth-century character," intended for those who appreciate older formulations and high-quality work. A fragrance critic writing in 2021 noted that the company has "always tried to remain as close to the original formula as possible," which he linked to the scent's timeless feel on the skin [10].

History and milestones

In its early decades the cologne accumulated awards at the international exhibitions that were then a central marketplace for European manufacturers. A gold medal at the 1862 London International Exhibition was followed by further gold medals in Vienna (1873), Paris (1878) and Melbourne (1888), and later a Gold Plaque awarded in New York in 1974. An Italian account published in 2024 states that the cologne earned 24 gold medals at major exhibitions between the mid-1850s and 1974, alongside honours including a "Diploma d'Onore" and a designation it renders as "Royal Jewel" [12].

A second strand of the brand's history is political rather than commercial. Acqua di Genova is associated with figures of the Italian Risorgimento, the nineteenth-century movement toward Italian unification. The company records King Vittorio Emanuele II as the cologne's chief patron and names the statesman Camillo Benso di Cavour and the diplomat Costantino Nigra among its users. According to a German fragrance retailer's brand history, King Vittorio Emanuele II granted Frecceri an official royal warrant by decree of 28 March 1866, appointing him supplier to the royal household [11]. The same period brought the cologne to wider European attention through Virginia Oldoini, Countess of Castiglione, who the company says wore the fragrance and drew the interest of the French emperor Napoleon III.

In 2003 the house marked the 150th anniversary of the original cologne, launching the Linea 1853 and the Gold & Silver collections to commemorate the date.

Ownership

Acqua di Genova has no independent brand website; all of its brand-facing material is published within the domain of Intercosma West S.A.S., a Genoa company that describes itself as having been founded more than 40 years ago and as working chiefly in the production and trade of cosmetics and perfumes [4]. Its facilities — head office, offices and a production plant of more than 15,000 square metres — are in Genoa, where the company also manages other historic Italian lines such as Zasmin and Sergio Soldano.

The exact nature of the relationship is reported two ways. Intercosma West's own company page lists Acqua di Genova among the historic brands it owns and manages, which the packet treats as the primary statement of the relationship [4]. Some external descriptions instead characterise Intercosma West as the brand's licence owner and authorised retailer rather than its proprietor; this framing appears in secondary fragrance-database material [14]. The discrepancy concerns the legal form of control, not the fact that the brand operates under the Intercosma West umbrella.

Philosophy and positioning

The brand positions itself on heritage and continuity, emphasising authenticity, Italian craftsmanship and a classical, restrained style. Its stated appeal is to buyers who value formulations from the past and the refinement of what it calls a highest-quality product. Marketing copy for the brand uses the line "Acqua di Genova since 1853," foregrounding the founding date as the central claim.

Within fragrance retail the cologne is presented at the upper end of the market, carried by niche perfume retailers in the United Kingdom, Germany and elsewhere rather than through mass distribution.

Products and innovation

The range is organised into several lines. The Linea Classica centres on the original 1853 eau de cologne, offered as a cologne for both men and women; the brand says it has kept its characteristics unchanged across 150 years. The Linea 1853, introduced for the 2003 anniversary, adds gendered eau de toilette and aftershave products, while the Gold & Silver collection of the same year presents the house in a more contemporary register. The later La Superba line is a six-fragrance set the company describes as a tribute to the natural landscape of Liguria, named after Genoa's historic epithet "la Superba." A Linea Bagno extends the brand into bath and body products such as bath foam, body lotion and a citrus body spray.

The signature cologne is built on Mediterranean citrus and floral materials. A fragrance database lists top notes of lemon, bergamot, sweet orange, rosemary, lavender and neroli; heart notes of jasmine, rose and orange blossom; and base notes of patchouli, sandalwood, amber and musk [13]. A 2021 review characterised the result as a unisex citrus cologne that needs regular reapplication to keep its brightness.

Recognition

Beyond the nineteenth- and twentieth-century exhibition medals, the brand has drawn modern editorial attention framed around its heritage. A fragrance critic reviewed the cologne in 2021 under the heading "An Italian Masterpiece," and in October 2024 the Italian outlet Civico20 News published a long-form article presenting Acqua di Genova as a cultural artifact of the Risorgimento.

Current status

The brand is active. It remains in production at the Intercosma West facility in Genoa and is distributed through niche fragrance retailers in several European markets, including Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Spain and Italy. The most recent confirmation in the packet is the October 2024 Italian article, which reports the cologne as still readily available in quality perfumeries [12]. No official Acqua di Genova social media presence was identified, and the brand has no Wikipedia entry; its public footprint runs through Intercosma West and the retailers that carry it.
