Overview
Actinica is a sunscreen brand owned by the Swiss dermatology company Galderma. Its sole product, Actinica Lotion SPF 50+, is a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen classified as a medical device and aimed at people at elevated risk of skin cancer, including immunosuppressed and organ-transplant patients.
The brand began as "Daylong Actinica", part of the portfolio of Spirig Pharma A.G. of Egerkingen, Switzerland, a dermatology company that had been developing and marketing skin products for more than 60 years. Galderma acquired Spirig and its brands in a deal announced in December 2012 and expected to close in early 2013 [6]. Actinica has been marketed by Galderma ever since.
Origin & ownership
Actinica originated with Spirig Pharma, an Egerkingen-based dermatology firm whose range also included the Excipial skincare line and the wider Daylong sun-protection family [6]. When Galderma announced its purchase of Spirig in 2012, it described the company as having "over 60 years of experience in developing, producing, and marketing dermatological products" and named Daylong Actinica among the acquired brands, characterising it as a product that "prevents actinic keratosis, a non-melanoma skin cancer type" [6]. Spirig generated CHF 98.4 million in sales in 2011 and employed 390 staff, and Galderma planned to use the Egerkingen site as the base for its Swiss operations [6].
Galderma itself was established in 1981 as a joint venture between L'Oréal and Nestlé [5]. It later became a wholly owned Nestlé subsidiary, was sold in 2019 to an investor consortium led by EQT, and completed an initial public offering in March 2024 [5]. The company describes itself as focused solely on dermatology and reported net sales of about 5.2 billion US dollars in 2025 [4]. Within Galderma's wider portfolio, Actinica sits alongside consumer skincare brands such as Cetaphil [4].
Sources differ on which location to attach to the brand. Galderma's acquisition announcement places the brand's origin in Egerkingen, Switzerland, through Spirig [6]; the Swedish product site lists the current manufacturer as Galderma Laboratories (UK) Ltd. [1], while Galderma's corporate headquarters is in Zug, Switzerland [5]. All are within the Galderma group, and both the Spirig origin and the corporate parent are Swiss.
Products & positioning
The brand centres on a single product, Actinica Lotion SPF 50+, sold in an 80-gram pump bottle. According to the company, it is a broad-spectrum UVA/UVB sunscreen "developed both to protect the skin from sun damage and to prevent actinic keratoses from forming" — rough, scaly patches that the brand's educational material describes as a precursor to non-melanoma skin cancer. The lotion is fragrance-free, water-resistant, suitable for sensitive skin and formulated without PEG emulsifiers. Its UV filters include bis-ethylhexyloxyphenol methoxyphenyl triazine, ethylhexyl triazone, isoamyl p-methoxycinnamate and butyl methoxydibenzoylmethane.
Unlike a conventional cosmetic sunscreen, Actinica is positioned as a medical-device sunscreen for higher-risk groups. Its Swedish site notes that people whose doctors have identified an increased risk of actinic keratosis should use sunscreens classified as medical devices, and recommends generous daily application to achieve the labelled SPF. The brand is distributed through pharmacies.
Galderma states that the lotion is clinically tested and "scientifically proven to protect the skin from sun damage", and that it protects against UV radiation and helps prevent certain forms of skin cancer. The company cites a two-year study of 120 organ-transplant recipients in which use of the product reduced actinic keratosis by 53 percent in high-risk patients [1].
