Summary

Overview

Adidas is a German sportswear company founded by Adolf "Adi" Dassler on 18 August 1949 in Herzogenaurach, Bavaria [1]. While the company is known worldwide for footwear and apparel, its presence in beauty is a separate strand: a range of fragrances and personal-care products made and marketed under licence by Coty. The licensed line spans deodorants, body sprays, eaux de toilette and shower products for both men and women.

The brand remains active. Coty's adidas fragrance and personal-care business is produced and sold globally, and the two companies renewed their long-term licence in August 2023 [2].

Origin and founders

Adidas grew out of a family shoe business. The Dassler brothers, Adolf and Rudolf, had run Gebrüder Dassler Schuhfabrik in Herzogenaurach since 1924. After the brothers fell out, the partnership dissolved, and in 1949 Adi Dassler registered the company as Adidas AG; Rudolf went on to found the rival sportswear firm Puma in the same town [1].

One of the more unusual episodes in the company's early history concerns its visual trademark. According to Wikipedia, in 1952 Adidas acquired its three-stripe mark from the Finnish athletic-footwear brand Karhu Sports for two bottles of whisky and a sum equivalent to about €1,600 [1]. The trefoil logo followed in 1972.

Ownership

Adidas is a publicly traded company, listed on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange and a component of the DAX index [1]. Its beauty and fragrance products, however, are not made by Adidas itself. Coty holds the licence to manufacture, distribute and market the personal-care, wellness and fragrance lines, an arrangement the licensor describes as focused on "the intersection of personal care, wellness, sports and sports lifestyle" [2].

Products and innovation

The beauty line began with fragrance. Coty introduced "Adidas Moves for Him" in the United States in 1999, with a women's version following in 2000 [3]. Trade coverage notes that some Coty-aligned sources date the adidas personal-care partnership to 1985, which conflicts with the documented 1999 first-fragrance date; the earlier date appears to refer to an original personal-care licence under a previous licensee rather than to Coty, and is treated as uncertain [6].

The most recent expansion is Active Skin & Mind, a body-care range of deodorants and shower products positioned around athletic performance and recovery, launched in September 2022 [3]. Personal Care Insights reports that the products use a complex of glycerol and hyaluronic acid intended to aid rapid skin-moisture recovery [4]. The range is also described as a clean-formulation line: sulfate-free and vegan shower gels said to be 98% biodegradable, packed in recycled and refillable materials, with plastic-free options such as shower bars and paper-based packaging [4].

Philosophy and positioning

The licensed beauty arm is presented as sitting where personal care, wellness and sports lifestyle meet, extending the parent brand's athletic identity into grooming and body care [2]. With the Active Skin & Mind launch, Coty said it aimed to position adidas "as a leading premium body care line." The line leans on contemporary clean-beauty and sports-wellness themes rather than on the heritage of the footwear business.

Current status

Adidas is an active, global company, and its Coty-licensed beauty and fragrance line is actively produced and sold worldwide. The most recent notable development was the August 2023 renewal of the long-term licence between the two firms, alongside the continued rollout of Active Skin & Mind, which gained traction in Europe before expanding into China [2][3].
