ærlig is a Danish independent perfume house based in Kolding, founded by Lis Hansen. Its name is the Danish word for "honest," and that idea runs through the brand's central premise: fragrances formulated to leave out the substances on the European Union's declarable-allergen list, rather than including them at the legal thresholds that allow them to go undeclared. ærlig was created by Lis Hansen, a trained laboratory technician and environmental technician who had spent years developing hair- and skincare products before turning to fragrance. She has said it was that product-development work that gave her insight into how often declarable allergens in perfume are overlooked. The perfumes use a base of organic, undenatured alcohol derived from organic wheat, and the scents were developed in collaboration with Swiss perfumers.
