Summary

Overview

Affinessence is a French niche perfume house based in Paris, founded by perfumer Sophie Bruneau. Its defining idea is structural: where classical perfumery is built as a "pyramid" of top, heart and base notes that unfold in sequence, Affinessence composes fragrances around a single tier of notes so that the scent stays largely constant on the skin. The house describes itself as the only niche brand to build perfumes this way [2].

Bruneau launched the line after a long career creating fragrances for other companies. In 2013 she set up Affinessence as a perfume-creation consulting business offering strategy and finished products to other brands, and from that base she developed her own house, presenting its first fragrances under the name a couple of years later. The brand remains active: in 2025 and 2026 it has reported exhibition appearances in Shanghai and Saudi Arabia and a window display at the niche perfumery Les Senteurs in London's Mayfair [1].

Origin & founder

According to the company, Bruneau spent more than 30 years creating perfumes for numerous brands before starting her own. The retailer KAMS Paris, in a founder biography, frames her earlier career somewhat differently, describing more than 25 years in the perfume and cosmetics industry and a previous role as a marketing director; it does not name the brands she worked with. Both accounts agree she had a long industry background before going independent.

The house's name is glossed as "affinity with essence" [5]. Bruneau has said her method begins with raw materials rather than an abstract concept — an approach she compares to sculpture, working from natural matter toward a finished form.

There is a recorded discrepancy over when the perfume line actually began. The brand's own creator page repeatedly dates the debut Base Notes Collection to 2015 [2], and the fragrance database Fragrantica lists the release year of its first scent, Santal-Basmati, as 2015 [7]. The KAMS Paris founder biography instead says the line launched "three years later (2016)" [6]. The 2013 date refers specifically to the founding of the consulting company, not the perfume line.

Philosophy & positioning

Affinessence positions itself as a house built on a manifesto Bruneau calls "Break the Pyramid." The company argues that removing the classical note structure yields what it calls "permanent" perfumes that do not evolve through the day, which it frames as a way of guaranteeing consistency and concentrating each fragrance on the essence of a single ingredient family [2]. Bruneau summed up the idea in a phrase the brand uses as a tagline: "Let's break the pyramid."

The house describes its values as excellence in craftsmanship, creative boldness and sincerity, the last of which it links to what it calls "a responsible and committed luxury that makes sense" and a concern for eco-responsibility. Its fragrances are presented as high-concentration and unisex; the brand-history source describes the line as linear and genderless.

Products

Affinessence is organised into three collections, each named for the tier of notes it foregrounds: the Base Notes Collection (its debut), followed by the Top Notes Collection and the Heart Notes Collection. The Heart Notes range, including Rose-Liquorice and Saffron-Neroli, was introduced in October 2024.

The house's bestseller is Santal-Basmati (also styled Sandalwood-Basmati), a scent pairing Mysore sandalwood with a basmati-rice note and described by the brand as wrapped in patchouli, iris and cashmeran [7]. Other signature compositions include Patchouli-Agar Wood, built on Indonesian agarwood (oud) and patchouli; Cedar-Iris, combining iris absolute with three cedar essences; and Vanilla-Benzoin, a vanilla-and-balsamic blend. The collections draw on hero materials such as sandalwood, patchouli, iris, oud, cedar, benzoin, vanilla and rose de Grasse.

While Affinessence presents itself as the creative house, with Bruneau as its art director, individual fragrances are composed with outside perfumers. The brand names Nathalie Lorson and Fabrice Pellegrin among its collaborators [2], while Fragrantica credits Alexandra Carlin specifically with the composition of Santal-Basmati [7].

Recognition

Santal-Basmati was named Best Artistic Perfume at the 2023 MAPA awards in China, where the brand also reports a retail and exhibition presence [5]. In 2026 its Rose-Liquorice featured in the window of Les Senteurs in London, where Bruneau led a master class [1].

Sustainability & solidarity

The company states an eco-responsibility commitment and runs two named solidarity programmes [3]. Through the industry organisation CEW, Bruneau holds monthly "olfactory rehabilitation" workshops at Garches Hospital in France, using scent with stroke and head-injury patients; the brand notes that smell is the human sense most directly linked to the limbic system, which governs memory and emotion. Separately, Affinessence contributes financially to a Purpan Foundation project supporting an irrigation and agroforestry programme for a Quechua farming community of 80 families in El Terrado, Bolivia. No donation amounts are disclosed.

Current status

Affinessence is an active independent house. It states distribution across 52 countries on every continent, sold through niche perfumeries and department stores including stockists across France, the rest of Europe, the Nordics, the Americas, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East [4]. Its most recent reported activity, in spring 2026, was the London window display at Les Senteurs [1]. The house has no publicly recorded parent company and appears to remain founder-led.
