Summary

Overview

Agatha Paris is a French costume-jewelry and accessories house founded in Paris in 1974 by Michel Quiniou [1]. Built to offer fashionable, affordable jewelry to women who wanted something more distinctive than department-store pieces but could not stretch to fine jewelry [4], it grew into a recognisable Parisian accessories label over five decades. The brand later added a fragrance line, which is how it appears in beauty catalogues alongside its core jewelry.

The company is no longer independent. After changing hands in 2006 and passing through receivership in 2020, it was acquired by the French jewelry group THOM and is today operated as part of THOM Group [3]. The business remains active, marketing its 50-year milestone as "50 years of history" and continuing to release new collections.

Origin and founders

Agatha was founded in 1974 by Michel Quiniou, who set out to challenge the conventions of fine jewelry with free-spirited, bold and accessible designs aimed at women with new aspirations [1]. According to the company, the house was conceived as a way for women to "express their own unique style" through chic, affordable pieces. The name is said to derive from the natural stone agate: by one account, Quiniou chose it while looking for a feminine name for the business [4].

THOM Group, the current owner, describes the founder's intent as an "innovative and accessible French jewellery brand," and the house has positioned itself around Parisian elegance paired with a deliberately bold, mix-and-layer approach to jewelry.

History and milestones

Through the 1980s the label expanded across France, opening more than a dozen shops, and in the early 1990s it introduced customizable jewelry built around interchangeable charms and beads. In 1988 it adopted a Scottish terrier as its mascot, reportedly in honour of Quiniou's own Scottie dog, named Leon; Scottie charms and brooches became a recurring motif in its designs [4].

Quiniou retired in 2006, and the brand was bought by the Hong Kong-based King Power group [4]. In 2014 Agatha launched its own fragrance line, developed with perfumers including Philippe Bousseton, with releases such as L'Amour à Paris and Un Matin à Paris [5].

The 2020 health crisis and shifting retail conditions pushed the Agatha companies into court-supervised reorganisation in late 2020. In February 2021 the brand was taken over out of receivership by THOM (the GOLDSTORY group) together with the manufacturer Altesse, backed by Renaissance Luxury Group, through the Bobigny Commercial Court [3]. THOM then bought out the remaining stake in December 2022, taking full control of the brand [4]. The two dates reflect a single transition — an initial joint acquisition followed by full consolidation — rather than competing accounts.

Ownership

Agatha Paris is owned by THOM Group, a French jewelry retailer whose portfolio also includes Histoire d'Or. THOM (via GOLDSTORY) and Altesse first acquired the brand jointly in 2021, and THOM took full control at the end of 2022 [3]. The earlier 2006–2020 ownership rested with King Power of Hong Kong.

Philosophy and positioning

The house presents itself as free-spirited, bold and accessible, offering what it calls chic, affordable creations. It was built for the mid-market — more stylish than generic department-store jewelry, but priced below fine jewelry. THOM Group frames the line as "elegant and easy to wear jewels for urban and contemporary women." The company says its pieces are designed in-house in Paris, hand-drawn and sculpted before being crafted, and it refreshes its range through monthly capsule releases.

Products and innovation

Agatha's core business is costume jewelry: necklaces, earrings, bracelets, rings, charms and brooches, with charm bracelets, chunky chains, wide-link bracelets and cuffs among its recognisable items. The Scottie-dog charm, tied to the mascot adopted in 1988, is the brand's enduring signature collectible. Recurring design elements named by the company include mirror-polished silver, a signature bar clasp and chain links. A navy-blue brand colour and a store concept of products pinned to the wall are described by THOM Group as part of the house's identity.

Since 2014 the brand has also sold fragrance under its own name, including L'Amour à Paris and the 2020 release Enjoy [5]. The fragrance line is the reason Agatha Paris is listed in beauty assortments rather than jewelry alone.

Recognition and press

In 2023, after launching e-commerce in the United Kingdom, the brand was reported to be planning new store openings in France, Madrid and Brussels under THOM Group ownership [6].

Current status

Agatha Paris is active but no longer independent; it operates as a brand within THOM Group following the 2021–2022 acquisition [3]. The company reports a retail footprint of 76 stores and corners across France, Spain and China, alongside 358 wholesale points of sale [3]. Its website remains maintained — carrying a 2026 copyright and ongoing campaign and capsule activity — and the brand markets its half-century as "50 years of history."
