Akademikliniken

Akademikliniken is a Swedish aesthetic-medicine group founded in Stockholm in 1991, the same year its first clinic opened on Riddargatan [3]. It began as a private clinic specialised in plastic surgery and grew into what the company describes as the Nordic region's largest provider of aesthetic plastic surgery and advanced skin treatments, operating across Sweden, Norway and Denmark. Its relevance to beauty lies less in surgery than in skincare: for years Akademikliniken sold its own-brand line, AK Skincare, alongside professional ranges from other companies.

That own line is now being wound down. While the clinic group remains active, the AK Skincare webshop announced it would close on 1 June 2026, discontinuing the in-house range in favour of carefully selected products from other brands [4]. As a company Akademikliniken continues to operate; as a packaged-skincare label specifically, it is stepping back.

The clinic was established in 1991 by experienced plastic surgeons from Karolinska University Hospital, who shared what the company recounts as a vision of building a large, high-technology private clinic devoted to plastic surgery [3]. The first location opened on Riddargatan in central Stockholm, and the group later expanded to additional cities including Gothenburg, Malmö, Helsingborg, Norrköping, Uppsala and Västerås, as well as clinics in Norway and Denmark.

Akademikliniken has passed through two private-equity owners. Valedo Partners Fund I AB took a majority shareholding in 2011, and in 2016 Polaris Private Equity IV acquired the majority holding from Valedo, with key employees and founders retaining significant stakes [6]. According to the announcement of the 2016 transaction, the business had grown its sales from SEK 225 million in 2011 to SEK 363 million in 2015 [6].

The group states its vision as creating "the world's most satisfied customers — with themselves," with safety and quality described as the foundation of its work [2]. Its personnel are presented as licensed, certified and authorised, and the clinics offer a "Trygghetsgaranti," or safety guarantee [2].

For its own skincare line, Akademikliniken set out a deliberately pared-back approach. The company said it did not believe in long and complicated routines, favouring multifunctional products built around what it called science-backed ingredients in relevant concentrations, with results prioritised over volume [4]. The AK Skincare range was, by the company's account, developed jointly by plastic surgeons, dermatologists and cosmetic chemists, and intended for both professional treatment at the clinic and home care [4].

Akademikliniken's beauty offering has two parts. The first was its own AK Skincare line, sold through a dedicated webshop. The second is a professional retail selection carried at the clinics: ZO Skin Health, an advanced skincare system the company attributes to dermatologist Zein Obagi, and Alumier MD, which the group lists as available exclusively at Akademikliniken [5]. With the in-house line discontinued, these third-party professional ranges form the basis of the skincare it offers.

The Akademikliniken clinic group remains active. The company reports more than 60,000 aesthetic treatments a year and over 300 employees, of whom 176 are specialists including 17 surgeons [2]. Earlier figures from the period around the 2016 ownership change were lower — that announcement cited more than 50,000 procedures annually, and older portfolio material put the number nearer 30,000 to 50,000 — reflecting growth over time rather than a contradiction [6].

The beauty-specific change is the closing of the AK Skincare webshop on 1 June 2026 and the discontinuation of the own-brand line, after which the clinics intend to retail selected products from other companies instead [4].
