Overview
Akileine (also styled Akileïne) is a foot-care brand from Monaco, owned by the family-run Laboratoires ASEPTA. Its story begins with an unusual request: in the late 1930s, croupiers at the Monte-Carlo casino, who spent long shifts on their feet, asked a local pharmacist for something to relieve their tired, swollen legs and feet. The pharmacist, Henri Adam, worked out a formula based on yarrow, a plant the brand describes as pain-relieving, and that formula became the starting point for the brand.
The brand dates its founding to 1947, when Adam, Paul Lacroix and Henri Mas launched the Akileine name; the parent company, however, also markets it as "the Foot Expert since 1943", the year its own laboratory was founded. Today Akileine is sold mainly through pharmacies and is organised around a simple idea: a separate line of care for each common foot complaint, from dry heels to sweaty or swollen feet.
Origin & founders
The founding account is told in broadly the same way by the brand, its parent company and an independent business profile, with differences in detail. According to the brand's German-language website, the casino croupiers approached Henri Adam toward the end of the 1930s. He had recently given up his pharmacy, the Pharmacie Anglaise, but still developed a yarrow-based formula for the problem. Together with Paul Lacroix and "his old youth friend" Henri Mas, he then founded the Akileine brand in 1947 [2].
The parent company's own history page frames the relationships slightly differently. It says Adam had just sold his pharmacy to Charles Campora and Paul Lacroix, and that Henri Mas joined the founding team as Paul Lacroix's childhood friend [5]. The founders' names are the same in every account; only the question of whose friend Mas was differs.
A 2023 profile by the Monaco Economic Board adds more context. It describes Lacroix as a graduate of the HEC business school and a natural salesman who took charge of the company's management, while Mas, described as a major financier, looked after the financial side. In that account, Laboratoires ASEPTA was set up in 1943 to market Adam's cream, and Akileine at first consisted of a single product: a cream for overheated feet. The same profile recalls that the brand's early marketing slogan was "toothpaste for feet" [8].
### Founding date
Two founding years circulate for the brand. The German brand site states plainly that the founders created the Akileine brand in 1947, and the parent company's history page agrees that "in 1947, the trademark Akileïne® was patented" [5]. On its Akileine product page, however, the parent describes the brand as "the Foot Expert since 1943" [6]. The 1943 date matches the year in which Laboratoires ASEPTA itself was founded, according to the Monaco Economic Board [8]. This article follows 1947 as the year of the brand, and 1943 as the year of the company behind it.
History & milestones
The early years were slow. Launching what the brand site calls a "luxury product" such as a foot cream so soon after the Second World War was difficult, because people had more pressing needs. Through persistence, Lacroix and Mas gradually won over pharmacies on the Côte d'Azur and later in Strasbourg and Paris. The Monaco Economic Board notes that this coincided with the professionalisation of foot care in France, where the state diploma for chiropodists was only recognised in 1947.
During the post-war economic boom, the company broadened its range under the Akileine name and, according to the brand, extended its offer from the 1950s onward to many further skin and hair care products. ASEPTA also began building a family of separate brands around Akileine: Vita Citral for hand care in 1952, Ecrinal for hair, lashes and nails some twenty years later, and Coup d'Éclat for facial care in 1978.
The 1980s were the decade of international expansion. The Monaco Economic Board describes the company setting up operations in Europe, the United States, Canada and North Africa, supported by more than 60 distributors abroad.
In 1993 the laboratory introduced Akildia, a foot-care line for people with diabetes. The parent company describes it as "the very first footcare product dedicated to diabetics" [5]; that claim comes from the company itself and has not been independently assessed.
Ownership
Akileine has remained with Laboratoires ASEPTA throughout its history, and no acquisitions involving the brand are documented. The parent company describes itself as always independent and managed by the founders' descendants, with production based in the Principality of Monaco [5]. The brand's own site makes the same point, saying the business has been family-led for more than 75 years and works entirely independently.
Management has passed down through the founding families. According to the Monaco Economic Board, Henri Mas's son Georges, who had been export manager since 1970, became managing director in 1990. Anne-Marie Noir, Paul Lacroix's daughter, became managing director in 1994 and took over her father's role after his death in 2002, with the two co-managing the company [8].
ASEPTA's other brands include Ecrinal, Coup d'Éclat, Vita Citral and the Sports Akileine sub-range. The group says it reaches more than 60 countries through local distributors and five subsidiaries, in Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, Tunisia and Canada. The German-language Akileine website is operated by Labosept, the group's German entity [3].
Philosophy & positioning
Akileine presents itself as a specialist in feet rather than a general body-care brand. Its German site sums up the approach in one line: because every foot is individual, it always needs an individual treatment. The current tagline, "Meine Füße, mon amour" ("My feet, my love"), mixes German and French.
The brand says it researches and develops all of its products in-house and has done so since its founding. It links this to a long-standing policy of quality and innovation, and "Quality and Innovation" is also the motto quoted on the parent company's history page. The company reports about 200 employees and says it exports around half of its production. The Monaco Economic Board's 2023 profile gave a lower figure of 165 employees.
On its parent's English-language site, the brand is introduced with the line "Happy feet for happy people!" and described as the number one foot-care brand in France [6]. That ranking is the company's own claim. Elsewhere, ASEPTA says more modestly that it has become a leader in French pharmacies for foot care with Akileine and for nail care with Ecrinal.
Products & innovation
The range is organised into colour-coded lines, each aimed at a particular foot problem:
- Akileine Blue (Blau in German) targets dry, cracked and callused skin. It includes the Hydra-Defense Balm, sold in Germany as Hydro-Schutz Balsam with a promise of 24-hour moisture, alongside a Nutri-Repair Cream and an Overnight Foot Mask. - Akileine Red (Rot) is for tired, heavy and swollen feet, with products such as effervescent foot-bath tablets meant to refresh the feet and ankles. - Akileine Green (Grün) addresses sweating and odour, with antiperspirant creams, gels, powders and sprays, and a 3-in-1 deodorant spray containing menthol. - Sports Akileine is aimed at active people and includes products such as an arnica massage oil.
Beyond these lines, the parent company lists foot-protection accessories such as insoles, toe separators and cushions under the Akileïne Podoprotection name, as well as the Akildia range for diabetic feet.
Yarrow, the plant behind Henri Adam's original formula, remains the ingredient most closely tied to the brand's origin story. The Latin name of the plant, achillea, is the one the parent company uses when it retells the founding.
On testing, ASEPTA states that all its products undergo safety and efficacy testing to comply with cosmetics legislation, and that clinical or dermatological studies are carried out and monitored by experts [7]. The group also says it monitors the origin and quality of its raw materials and keeps ingredients and finished products traceable. These are quality commitments rather than environmental ones; no third-party certifications are documented for the brand.
Recognition
ASEPTA lists a series of company-level awards on its history page, among them the Prix Norx (1988), a Best Brand Award (1989), the Monaco Business Award (2000), the Label Eurêka (2005) and the Trophée Femmes de l'Économie (2015) [5]. These honours went to the parent laboratory rather than to Akileine specifically, and they are reported by the company itself.
Current status
Akileine is an active brand. Its German website was live in 2026 with a current product range, including the Sports line and the 3-in-1 deodorant spray, and pointed buyers to online pharmacies [1]. The parent company continues to manufacture in Monaco, where it reports producing more than six million units a year across its brands, and it remains independent and in the hands of the founding families.
