Overview
Alqvimia is a Spanish natural cosmetics company based in Tortellà, in the La Garrotxa district of Girona, Catalonia. It was founded in the mid-1980s by Idili Lizcano, a philosopher and perfumer, who built the business around essential oils and aromatherapy. The company makes body oils, facial care, natural perfumes and aromatherapy products, and it describes itself as a maker of "high-end natural and holistic cosmetics".
Much of Alqvimia's business runs through the professional channel rather than shops. Spas and upper-mid to high-end hotels have been its main customers, and the brand's spa rituals form a large part of what it sells. After the founder's death in 2024, the company remains in the hands of his family, led by his daughter Drolma Lizcano, who has been chief executive since 2013.
Origin & founders
Idili Lizcano grew up in Paris and trained as a philosopher before turning to perfumery. The company's own account of its beginnings is a spiritual one. According to Alqvimia, Lizcano had travelled widely and was meeting his spiritual teacher in India when he decided to create a cosmetics company that would, in the brand's words, "transform the world, from the individual transformation of each one" [4].
The business started in Can Duran, a 14th-century farmhouse at the foot of the Pyrenees. There Lizcano selected essential oils and blended them with vegetable oils by hand. The company says it has never left: forty years on, it still describes the same farmhouse in Tortellà as its home.
The founding date is given two ways. The brand's history page states that Lizcano "founded ALQVIMIA in 1984", but the same page also says that "in 1985, ALQVIMIA was born in La Garrotxa", settling at Can Duran [3]. Independent coverage follows the earlier date: a 2024 trade-press obituary places the brand's birth in 1984 [7], as does a 2011 report by the Spanish beauty magazine Trendencias [9]. The 1985 date may refer to the move into the farmhouse rather than the start of the company. This article follows 1984.
Lizcano's name is also spelled two ways in print. The company uses "Idili", while at least one trade publication has written it as "Idilli" [8].
History & milestones
Alqvimia grew slowly from its farmhouse base. In 1991 it began selling outside Spain, with the Netherlands, Belgium and Italy among its first foreign markets [7]. By 2003 it had opened its own Alqvimia Store & Spa concept; trade press lists locations in Barcelona, Madrid, Girona and Hong Kong, without separate opening dates for each city. In 2004, according to the same trade report, the brand received a Greenpeace Green Label for the quality and authenticity of its products [7].
A visit to the headquarters by Trendencias in 2011 gives a picture of the company at that time. Administration, the factory and quality control were all in Tortellà, and production ran on a single small line. The magazine noted that Alqvimia did not distil its own essential oils but bought them from suppliers around the world.
The second generation arrived in 2013, when Drolma Lizcano joined the business and became chief executive. Under her leadership the company adopted Holacracy, a system of self-management that replaces a traditional management hierarchy with defined roles and teams. Alqvimia says it was the first Spanish company to apply the system across its entire organisation [3].
A 2020 profile in the Spanish business magazine Emprendedores put figures to the company. In 2019 Alqvimia had revenue of 4.1 million euros, around 50 employees and about 250 products in its range. Some 66% of sales came through the professional channel, about 60% of sales were in Spain, and the brand exported to more than 20 countries. The magazine also reported that the company carried no bank debt [10]. The same article described a move of production to a new factory in Olot, also in La Garrotxa; the brand itself today refers to modern facilities of more than 2,000 square metres near Can Duran, where its formulas are made, stored and shipped.
In October 2023 the brand entered Ireland through the distributor Beauty & Skincare Essentials, which presented it to salons, spas and hotels as well as to consumers. The distributor's portfolio also includes Phytomer, Australian Bodycare and Phytocéane [8].
Idili Lizcano died in 2024. The company gives his dates as 1956 to 2024, and Next in Beauty Magazine reported his death on 3 June 2024, noting that he had been ill for three years and that he left the business in the hands of his children [7].
Ownership
Alqvimia is a family-run company. No parent company or outside owner is known, and no acquisitions are documented. Since the founder's death, the business has continued under his children, with Drolma Lizcano as chief executive.
Philosophy & positioning
Alqvimia frames its work through the language of alchemy, which also gives the company its name. It says its founder "merged alchemical knowledge with a spiritual vision of well-being" to create formulas meant to act on the skin, the emotions and general well-being at the same time. The brand's stated mission is "to offer products with soul that provide integral well-being through the transformative power of plants and aromatherapy". Its marketing presents beauty as "a journey" and skincare as a ritual.
The company describes its ingredient approach in detail. It says it favours essential and vegetable oils, waxes and esters, and that its main active ingredients are plant extracts, oils, hydrolates (the fragrant water left after distilling plants) and macerates (oils in which plant material has been steeped). One process claim stands out: according to Alqvimia, its oils are macerated for 15 days in darkness before going into a formula, following what it calls ancestral techniques.
Alqvimia also presents itself as a company with an unusual internal culture. Beyond Holacracy, it says it has practised what it calls a "humanized economy", based on ethical and moral values, for 20 years. Emprendedores described it as a pioneer of high-end natural cosmetics in Spain's luxury segment [10].
Products & innovation
The range covers three broad areas: body care, facial care and aromatherapy. Body oils are central to the catalogue. Emprendedores singled out its Body Sculpture oil (Body Sculptor Body Oil) as one of the stars of the range. Other body products include Queen of Egypt Body Oil and Bust Firming Oil, which in late 2026 also appeared as a limited edition, Brianda × ALQVIMIA. The body line also takes in elixirs, emulsions, tonics, scrubs, natural perfumes and colognes, and nutricosmetics (supplements taken by mouth).
On the face side, the Rejuvenate Wellaging Facial Cream is among the products the brand features. Its facial range highlights ingredients such as bio-retinol, retinal, hyaluronic acid and vitamin C. The company describes bio-retinol as a plant-based active that helps keep skin looking firm, smooth and radiant; no study is cited for the claim.
The aromatherapy line centres on essential oils, the material the company was built on. The site also groups products under themes such as hair wellness, menopause and perimenopause, and spagyria.
Sustainability
Alqvimia lists several environmental certifications. It holds ISO 22716, the international standard for good manufacturing practice in cosmetics, and says it is certified as a Green Corporate Sustainable Company by OCA Global [2]. It also reports a carbon footprint certification from Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition [6].
According to the company, its production plant runs on its own solar power, which it says saves 31.62 tonnes of CO2 a year. It reports that its boxes are 43% lighter than before and made with 39% recycled cardboard, that some bottles use recycled RPET plastic, and that it works with local, "KM 0" suppliers. The company also keeps its own biodynamic garden. No organic, vegan or cruelty-free certification is documented.
Recognition
The main recognition on record is the Greenpeace Green Label, which trade press reports the brand received in 2004. The company has also been the subject of features in Spanish business and beauty media, including Emprendedores and Trendencias.
Current status
Alqvimia is active. Its online shop was running dated promotions in November 2026, alongside a Christmas gift guide and the new limited-edition Bust Firming oil. The company operates from La Garrotxa under family leadership and sells through spas, hotels, its own stores and online, with a presence reported in about 20 countries in Europe and Asia.
