Overview
Amouage is a luxury fragrance house based in Muscat, Oman. It was founded in 1983 at the request of Sultan Qaboos bin Said, who wanted to revive Oman's ancient perfumery tradition [1]. The house frames itself as a meeting of East and West, drawing on the country's long history as a trading centre for frankincense and myrrh.
The company remains active and global. Its fragrances are sold in more than 80 countries through around a thousand retail points and a small network of standalone boutiques, with creative direction led by Renaud Salmon. Amouage is owned by Oman Perfumery LLC, a subsidiary of the SABCO Group [3].
Origin & founders
The house was established in Muscat in 1983. Wikipedia records Prince Sayyid Hamad bin Hamoud Al Busaidi as its founder [3], working at the behest of Sultan Qaboos bin Said; the company itself describes Amouage as a family business rooted in the Albusaidi family, and notes a succession of chairmen, with Sayyid Khalid taking over from founding chairman Sayyid Badr in 2003. The original mission was summed up in the phrase "The Gift of Kings."
The name itself blends two languages. According to editorial coverage, "Amouage" joins the French word amour, meaning love, with the Arabic word amwaj, meaning wave, so that it reads roughly as a wave of emotions [4].
History & milestones
Amouage's first fragrance, Gold, was created in 1983 by the Grasse perfumer Guy Robert and presented in golden crystal bottles made by Asprey [5]. The company says its portfolio has since grown to more than fifty perfumes.
Leadership has changed hands several times. David Crickmore was appointed chief executive in 2006 and stepped down in 2019 after a 13-year tenure. Christopher Chong, who had shaped the house's creative output for about twelve years, also left in 2019 [3]. Renaud Salmon has held the role of creative director since then [4]. In July 2025 the company joined the Aura Blockchain Consortium and introduced a Digital Product Passport, using blockchain technology to authenticate its products [3].
Ownership
Amouage is owned by Oman Perfumery LLC, which is a subsidiary of the SABCO Group, an Omani conglomerate [3]. The brand has remained within this structure rather than passing through the chain of acquisitions common among fragrance houses.
Philosophy & positioning
Amouage positions itself as "High Perfumery from the Sultanate of Oman." It describes its identity as "a unique fusion of East meets West" and points to "the contemporary majesty of Oman" and the country's heritage as a centre for incense and myrrh. The company organises its philosophy around themes it calls legacy, love, responsible production, innovation, loyalty and craftsmanship, and describes its approach as an obsessive attention to detail paired with a commitment to fine ingredients.
The house frames itself around local, "human-size" manufacturing and says it acknowledges its impact on the world around it. Its stated audience is a well-travelled clientele looking for something it describes as precious, extraordinary and personal.
Products & innovation
Frankincense is central to the house. It draws on Omani materials including frankincense from the islands, rock rose from the mountains and ambergris from the coast, alongside myrrh, rose and oud. The Perfume Society notes that the frankincense Amouage uses comes from the Boswellia sacra tree and is sometimes called "liquid gold" [2].
Among the house's signature fragrances are Gold, Jubilation, Epic, Honour and Interlude, which The Perfume Society describes as having become modern classics [2]. Gold, the 1983 debut, is built around frankincense, myrrh and rose and is treated as the starting point of the house's story.
Manufacturing is concentrated in Muscat, where the Amouage Perfume Manufacture and Visitor's Centre both produces most of the company's perfumes and serves as a museum space tracing the history of the house.
Recognition
Amouage has drawn coverage from fragrance and design press. Lampoon Magazine profiled the house in 2024, focusing on its Escape collection, its Omani frankincense sourcing and the work of Givaudan perfumer Quentin Bisch under Renaud Salmon's creative direction [6]. The Perfume Society's house profile describes Amouage as a luxury Omani fragrance house and highlights frankincense as its signature material [2].
Current status
Amouage is an active, globally distributed fragrance house. Its products are available in more than 80 countries, supported by twelve standalone boutiques and roughly a thousand selective retail locations including department stores, perfumeries and airports. Recent activity includes collection launches across 2024 and the July 2025 blockchain authentication initiative.
