Summary

Overview

Anne Klein is an American fashion house founded in New York City in 1968 by the designer Anne Klein, born Hannah Golofsky (1923–1974), together with her business partner Gunther Oppenheim [4]. Built around tailored separates for the working woman, the label became a fixture of American sportswear and remains an active, globally distributed brand. Since 2019 it has been owned by the brand-management company WHP Global [5].

For Glowjakt's purposes, Anne Klein's beauty presence is a licensed designer-fragrance line that sits alongside a much larger apparel, footwear, watch and jewelry business. The company is not a cosmetics or skincare house; its perfumes are sold under the Anne Klein name as part of a broader lifestyle range.

Origin and founders

Anne Klein had already made her name before the company that carries it. After a 1948 marriage to Ben Klein, she launched Junior Sophisticates and became one of the first designers known for "separates" — individual pieces meant to be combined into a coordinated wardrobe rather than worn as single dresses [4]. In 1968 she established Anne Klein & Company on 39th Street in Manhattan with Gunther Oppenheim [4], turning that idea into a full label.

The brand describes Klein as a designer who "originated the concept of a fully coordinated closet" and brought an American point of view to global fashion. That framing runs through the company's own account of its history, in which clothing is presented as a practical tool for the modern professional woman.

History and milestones

Klein's reputation grew quickly through the late 1960s and 1970s. She was inducted into the Coty Fashion Hall of Fame in 1971 [4], and in 1973 she was the only woman among the American designers at the Battle of Versailles, the contest that paired five American names against five French houses; the Council of Fashion Designers of America credits her modern separates with helping clinch the American team's win [6].

Klein died in 1974, but the company continued under her name. The CFDA describes her as "a trailblazing designer that forever changed the way women dress" and notes that her founding aim — to empower and celebrate women — was, in its words, "as relevant today as it was trailblazing in 1968" [6].

Ownership

Over the following decades the label passed through several corporate owners before reaching its current parent. In July 2019, WHP Global acquired Anne Klein from Premier Brands Group, the company formerly known as Nine West Holdings, which had emerged from bankruptcy earlier that year [5]. The purchase was WHP Global's first; the firm had launched as a brand-management platform led by Yehuda R. Shmidman and backed by a $200 million equity commitment from funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management [5].

At the time of the deal, WWD reported that Anne Klein generated more than $700 million in global retail sales, with individual categories run by separate licensees — footwear and handbags through Steve Madden, women's sportswear through the Kasper Group, jewelry through The Jewelry Group, and watches through E. Gluck [5]. The brand has long operated on this licensing model rather than manufacturing every category in-house.

Philosophy and positioning

Anne Klein positions itself as an accessible, coordinated American label aimed at the working woman. The company says its goal is "to be the go-to resource for her wardrobe and lifestyle," with a collection "designed to be infinitely accessible," and frames its identity around women's empowerment, compassion and practical style. Its stated tagline is "Clothes won't change the world. The women who wear them will." The brand also runs a "Women Who Do" interview series, hosted on Instagram Live by Klein's granddaughter Jesse Gre Rubinstein, profiling women across different industries.

Products

The Anne Klein name spans clothing, shoes, handbags, watches, jewelry, accessories and home goods. Its beauty-relevant slice is fragrance: the company maintains an Anne Klein fragrance collection, currently centered on the Love Anne Eau de Parfum, with the brand presenting perfume as a way to "accentuate your style."

Current status

Anne Klein is an active, globally distributed fashion brand. It runs a live e-commerce site with current campaigns such as "The Invisible Thread" and "Dress with Intention," an ongoing "Women Who Do" Instagram series, and active social channels [2]. Its presence in beauty is confined to the licensed fragrance line; the rest of the business sits in apparel and accessories.
