Summary

Overview

Annemarie Börlind is a German natural-cosmetics brand based in Calw, in the Black Forest, where all its products are developed and manufactured. It was founded in 1959 by cosmetologist Annemarie Lindner, her husband Walter Lindner, and over-the-counter-medicine maker Hermann Börner, who together established the parent company Börlind GmbH and introduced the skincare line under the Annemarie Börlind name [1][3]. The company name is a contraction of two of the founders' surnames, Börner and Lindner [3].

Still owned by the founding family and run by its third generation, the company remains active in 2026, with skincare, makeup, body care, hair care and sun protection sold across Germany and several international markets.

Origin and founders

The brand grew out of its founder's own search for a remedy. Annemarie Lindner, born in Berlin in 1920, trained as a cosmetologist in 1947 after an herbal mask treatment improved her problem skin. Out of that experience came a principle she repeated for the rest of her life: "If I can't eat it, I won't put it on my skin." She opened a small beauty salon in Eilenburg and treated clients with herbal extracts, but her practice was caught up in East Germany's discouragement of private enterprise — the salon was expropriated in 1951. She later worked as a sales representative for a Dresden cosmetics company, and her own "Kräuter-Präparate" herbal preparations earned the GDR authorities' "S" mark for premium quality. By the late 1950s a further threatened seizure pushed her and Walter Lindner to flee west to the Black Forest.

There they met Hermann Börner, a manufacturer of over-the-counter medicines who was looking for a cosmetics producer. The partnership formed Börlind GmbH in 1959 and, through Börner's connections, opened distribution into Germany's Reformhaus health-food stores. Annemarie Lindner led the company until 1985, when her son Michael took over as chief executive while she continued to advise on product development [9]. She died in 2016 at the age of 95 [9]; in her later years she had been recognised repeatedly for her work, and in 2010 a vocational school in Nagold was renamed the Annemarie-Lindner-Schule in her honour.

History and milestones

In 1965 the company received the neuform seal of the German health-store association and registered its lime-tree-leaf logo as a trademark, positioning itself as the first cosmetics maker to offer systematic skincare. The Calw headquarters was begun in 1972, the same year the firm opened its own deep spring at 80 metres; a second, deeper source was later tapped at 166 metres, and this soft Black Forest water became the base of its formulas. The site was extended in 1983 with what the company describes as ecologically designed, light-filled buildings.

The brand's international breakthrough came in 1974 with LL REGENERATION, described by the company as its first systematic skincare series and the product of four years of development and testing. Walter Lindner, who had been central to building the firm, died in 1978; Hermann Börner retired in the early 1980s and handed management to his son-in-law. A dermatological offshoot, DADO-cosmed GmbH, was founded by Michael Lindner in 1987 to make skincare for sensitive and problem skin, and today trades as DADO SENS Dermacosmetics. Börlind reports that it became exclusively owned by the Lindner family in 2003, and that it gained CSE (Certified Sustainable Economics) certification covering the whole company in 2012. The third generation arrived over the same decade: Nicolas Lindner joined in 2013 and took on marketing, and his sister Alicia joined in 2015 with responsibility for national and international sales. The company marked its 60th anniversary in 2019, and in 2020 the two siblings took over its leadership as Michael Lindner stepped back from daily operations [3].

Ownership

Annemarie Börlind is the principal brand of Börlind GmbH, a family-owned business that the company says passed into exclusive Lindner-family ownership in 2003 [3]. Leadership now sits with the third generation, Alicia and Nicolas Lindner, who assumed control in 2020. The group also owns the dermatological line DADO SENS, established as a subsidiary in 1987.

Philosophy and positioning

The company frames its work around three stated pillars: a scientific pioneering spirit, social and ecological commitment, and the responsible use of nature. Its mission statement describes Annemarie Börlind as standing for "natural cosmetics with proven efficacy," developed "from singular raw materials through innovative sustainable action," and it uses the tagline "Good for your skin, good for the planet." The brand traces all of this back to the founder's original maxim about not applying to the skin what one could not eat, and presents itself as a pioneer in complete care systems since 1959.

That positioning extends to how the company describes its supply chain and workforce: it points to fair-trade sourcing projects such as aloe vera from Guatemala, jojoba from Namibia and Himalayan wild cherry oil from Nepal, and says women make up about 80 per cent of its staff. Sold through perfumeries, pharmacies, organic shops, department stores and premium drugstores after distribution widened beyond health-food channels, the line sits at the premium end of the natural-cosmetics market.

Products and innovation

The range spans face-care systems, makeup, body and hair care, and sun protection, organised into named skincare lines such as SYSTEM ABSOLUTE, LL REGENERATION, AQUANATURE and ROSE NATURE. The makeup side covers eyes, lips and complexion, and the sun range runs from SPF 20 to SPF 50 alongside self-tanning and after-sun products. Recurring ingredients include the brand's own Black Forest deep spring water, drawn from more than 160 metres underground, alongside ceramides, hyaluronic acid and botanical extracts such as papyrus cells; according to the company it was the first to develop natural cosmetics using ceramides similar to the skin's own composition. Individual products draw on further actives — its 2-Phase Elastin Shake, for instance, features samphira oil. The water itself is described as exceptionally soft and free of chlorine and other chemicals, and is used exclusively in production.

On the research side, Börlind says its team partnered with the Italian institute Akott Group Italia in 2016 to develop two exclusive active ingredients from Black Forest rose stem cells — a lipo extract and a hydro extract used across a handful of products. The company states that the efficacy and skin-compatibility of its products are confirmed by independent test institutes [5], and its formulas exclude parabens, silicones, mineral-oil derivatives and microplastics.

Sustainability

Sustainability is presented as part of the brand's origins rather than a recent addition, traced back to the founder's eat-it-or-don't maxim. The company holds COSMOS Natural certification, which it cites as verifying that its ingredients are at least 99 per cent of natural origin, and says it has been certified climate-neutral since 2015 through the ClimatePartner scheme, compensating its emissions in part through a climate-protection project in Cambodia [1][7]. Since 2012 it has also held CSE certification, which it describes as assessing the whole company rather than individual products [3].

Its published goals include cutting operational carbon emissions to zero through renewable energy and tree planting, moving to fully recyclable, refillable or degradable packaging, and using only sustainable palm-oil derivatives. The firm says it has aligned its targets with all 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals and is developing a "Sustainability Strategy 2033" with what it calls sharpened ambitions. Its products are certified cruelty-free under PETA's Beauty Without Bunnies programme, and the company says it has used no animal extracts or animal testing since its founding, with vegetarian and vegan lines available [1].

Recognition

The founder was recognised repeatedly for her work in the natural-products field. Annemarie Lindner received the Natural Legacy Award in New York in 2005 — described in the company's own account as the American natural-products industry's equivalent of an Oscar — and the Order of Merit of Baden-Württemberg in 2010 [9]. Earlier honours included neuform's Golden Pin of Honour in 1987 and a place on FÜR SIE magazine's "100 Most Impressive Women of the Year" list in 2003. The brand itself reports a long list of industry and design honours, among them the German Design Award, the German Innovation Award, the ELLE International Beauty Award and GREEN BRAND Germany. The company also states that its products have earned the "excellent" rating more than 40 times from the German consumer-testing organisations Stiftung Warentest and ÖKO-TEST [5]. In 2013 the actress Christiane Paul, a brand ambassador, co-hosted an Annemarie Börlind event during a German Films reception in Los Angeles.

Current status

The brand is active. It remains family-owned and family-run, with Alicia Lindner serving as co-chief executive and brand spokesperson in 2026 and a forward-looking sustainability strategy still in development. Its products are distributed across Germany and Austria and a range of further markets including France, the Netherlands, the United States and Canada.
