Overview
Ardo is a Swiss brand of breast pumps, breastfeeding aids and nipple care made by Ardo medical AG, a family-owned company founded in Switzerland in 1995 [2] and headquartered in Unterägeri [6]. The company started out by taking over product lines from Ameda and launched its first pumps under its own name in 2010. Most of its business lies in medical devices, from home and clinic breast pumps to surgical suction pumps; its personal-care range is the smaller Ardo Care nipple-care line, which includes a lanolin cream and a vegan balm.
Ardo builds its public identity around the World Health Organization's code on marketing breast-milk substitutes, and says it deliberately avoids selling products that work against breastfeeding [3]. The brand is active: its most recent milestone, the hands-free MELIA pump, arrived in 2024, and it operates through national subsidiaries and distribution partners in around 50 countries.
Origin
Ardo medical AG was set up in 1995 by the Krähenbühl family. According to the company, the family had already held leading positions in the breastfeeding-aid industry since the 1960s, so the new business drew on several decades of experience in the field. A 2023 press release issued by the company's American arm describes the same heritage in broader terms, speaking of a family that built an international reputation over a 50-year span in electric breast pumps.
The Swiss parent calls itself a family business in its second generation [6], and the German website states that the founding family still runs the company today. Ardo's tagline, "Stillexpertise mit Haltung – verlässlich, ehrlich, nah", translates roughly as "breastfeeding expertise with principles – reliable, honest, close".
History and milestones
The company's first decade was closely tied to Ameda. In 2000 Ardo medical took over Ameda's surgical suction pumps [2]. Three years later it moved into breastfeeding aids by taking over the distribution of Ameda's breastfeeding products. By then it had already opened its first foreign subsidiary: Ardo medical GmbH, founded in Germany in 1999.
The shift from distributor to developer came in 2010, when the company launched its first breast pumps and breastfeeding aids under the Ardo name. It stresses that these were designed to comply with the WHO code from the outset. Between 2012 and 2014 it added CARUM, a breast pump intended for clinics, along with further breastfeeding products.
In 2021 Ardo introduced two smart pumps, ALYSSA and BELLIS. The company calls them the world's first pumps with automatic power pumping [2], a claim that rests on its own description. The Alyssa went on to win a UK parenting award the following year. The 2024 launch of MELIA then gave the range its first hands-free model; a British review of the Alyssa two years earlier had listed the lack of hands-free use among that pump's drawbacks.
The company has also widened its international reach. In October 2023 Ardo Medical, Inc., based in Herndon, Virginia, announced that it would act as the US distributor of Ardo's breast-pump products for new mothers in hospital care [10].
Ownership
Ardo is owned by Ardo medical AG, the Swiss parent company, which remains in the hands of the Krähenbühl family. Its German subsidiary, Ardo medical GmbH, is registered in Weßling, Bavaria, and lists Samuel Krähenbühl and Nicky Joppien as managing directors [4].
The company's own websites differ on the size of its subsidiary network. The German site names subsidiaries in Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom and the United States [2]. The Swiss parent's site, an older page, names four: Germany, the US, the UK and the Netherlands [6]. Both describe a wider network of independent distribution partners, put at "around 50" countries on the German site and "more than 50" on the Swiss one. Separate country websites exist for Switzerland, Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, the US and China.
The only acquisition the company lists is the 2000 takeover of Ameda's surgical suction pumps. No sister brands are documented.
Philosophy and positioning
Ardo presents itself as a breastfeeding-support company rather than a general baby-products brand. It says its aim is to develop products that mothers actually need, which it describes as "medizinisch fundiert, saugerfrei und WHO-Kodex-konform": medically sound, free of teats and compliant with the WHO code. The values it names are reliability, quality and genuine care for the people who use its products.
The WHO code in question is the International Code of Marketing of Breast-milk Substitutes, which Ardo describes as a globally recognised framework that helps protect, promote and support breastfeeding. On a page dedicated to the subject, the company says it deliberately refrains from marketing products that stand in the way of breastfeeding, naming formula as a default solution as one example. Its guiding sentence there is that the goal is "not to replace, but to make breastfeeding possible, comfortable and self-determined". Compliance with the code is a policy the company has set for itself rather than an external certification.
A second theme is Swiss origin. Ardo promotes what it calls a "Swiss quality promise" and says that Swiss standards run through every step, from development and precise production to meeting the strict requirements that apply to medical devices. The company says it develops, produces and distributes its own products.
Ardo addresses two audiences at once. For mothers, its German site combines an online shop with breast-pump rental, instructional videos, a blog, a podcast called "Stillleben x Ardo" and printed guides on breastfeeding and on premature babies. For healthcare professionals, it offers training through the Ardo Akademie, clinic pumps and accessories, pump rental for facilities, low-level laser therapy devices, birth-assistance products and surgical suction equipment. The company sums up the dual focus in a short line: "Für Mütter. Für Fachpersonen." (For mothers. For professionals.)
Products and innovation
Breast pumps form the core of the range. The current line-up includes the MELIA, Alyssa, Calypso and Amaryll models. The Calypso Double Plus, a double electric pump, is described by the parenting site Mumsnet as hospital-grade and as approved by the NHS, the UK's national health service, and used in maternity and neonatal units, milk banks and children's centres [9]. MadeForMums describes the Alyssa as a compact, cordless, portable and rechargeable hospital-grade pump.
Around the pumps sits a range of breastfeeding aids. These include Tulips nipple shields, which the company says are free of BPA and BPS, a supplemental nursing set for feeding at the breast, the kindestCup 3-in-1 milk collector and Day & Night breast pads. Bottles, bags and cool bags for storing breast milk complete the consumer range.
The Ardo Care line is the brand's personal-care offering. Ardo Care Lanolin is presented as a 100% natural nipple cream that protects and cares for sensitive, dry nipples; according to the company it is neutral in taste and smell, free of additives and does not need to be wiped off before breastfeeding. Lanolin is a fat obtained from sheep's wool, so this product is animal-derived. Ardo Care Balm is positioned as its vegan alternative to lanolin for dry, sensitive or irritated nipples [7], and the company says it is made from purely natural raw materials according to natural-cosmetics standards. Ardo Care compresses, gel pads described as cooling and moisturising, are marketed as first aid for sore nipples.
No third-party certifications are documented for the range. The vegan claim applies only to Ardo Care Balm.
Recognition
The Alyssa was named joint Gold Award winner at the 2022 MadeForMums Awards [8]. In a review published in August 2022, MadeForMums rated the pump 4.7 out of 5, praising its quiet, powerful suction and ease of cleaning while noting that it was not hands-free and had a short battery life.
Mumsnet reviewed the Calypso Double Plus in an article last updated in August 2025, calling it its top pick for a double electric breast pump. The reviewer singled out its quiet mechanism, but found it potentially difficult to use in public and not the most portable option.
Current status
Ardo is an active brand. The latest milestone on the company's own timeline is the 2024 launch of MELIA, its first hands-free pump, and the German online shop continues to carry the current pump range alongside rental services, a blog and a podcast. The US distribution arrangement announced in 2023 and the 2025 update of the Mumsnet review point to continued activity in both North America and the UK. The company remains family-owned and run from its headquarters in Unterägeri.
