Overview
ARGANDOR is a German natural-cosmetics brand built around argan oil, the oil pressed from the kernels of the Moroccan argan tree. It was founded by Ulla and Rudolf Bresink and is run by Argand'Or Cosmetic GmbH, a family company based in Bad Homburg vor der Höhe, Germany [4]. The founders date the brand to 2004, when they first encountered argan oil and chose the name; the first products followed in 2005 [8].
Over two decades the business grew from a single pure skin oil into a range of more than 20 products for face, body, hair and scalp, lips and nails. The formulas are developed and made in Germany, certified as natural and organic cosmetics, and built on organic argan oil bought from women's cooperatives in south-west Morocco. The brand remains active.
Origin & founders
The company tells its origin as a chance encounter. In November 2004, according to ARGANDOR, the Bresinks met a Moroccan man who spoke of a "wonder oil" he called "the gold of the Berbers" [2]. At the time, the founders recall, an internet search on the subject returned only around 1,200 results, and argan oil was almost unknown in Germany. Even well-travelled friends had never heard of it.
The name came soon after. While researching the oil, the founders learned that it is often called "golden oil" in Morocco. A few days later a neighbour mentioned holiday plans for Cala d'Or, the "golden coast" of Mallorca, and the two ideas merged: "Argan" plus "d'Or", or, as the brand puts it, "Argandor – the gold of Morocco" [8].
At the end of 2004 the couple travelled to the Arganeraie, the argan-forest region of south-west Morocco that UNESCO protects as a biosphere reserve. There, in small Berber villages, women still made the oil entirely by hand. They cracked the hard nuts with stones, ground the kernels in stone mills and kneaded the oil out drop by drop. The company notes that it took around 30 kilograms of fruit and two days of work to produce one litre.
Cosmetics were not the first plan. The business began with a pure, roasted argan oil for cooking, which found its way into upscale kitchens; the founders name the chef Johann Lafer among its admirers [3]. Scientific publications on the oil's effects on skin then prompted the Bresinks to develop a natural-cosmetics line of their own.
The founding date is not stated the same way everywhere. The brand's own history pages place the start in 2004, when the name was chosen, and its first market launch in 2005. A May 2025 press release issued by the company and republished on a third-party site instead says ARGANDOR has stood for certified natural cosmetics "since 2015", while the same text says the oils have been made for 20 years [9]. This article follows the brand's detailed account of 2004.
History & milestones
ARGANDOR presented its first products in 2005 at BIOFACH/VIVANESS, the trade fair for organic food and natural cosmetics. The company recalls strong media interest in the idea of bringing Moroccan argan oil to Germany. Shortly afterwards, it says, the international magazine ODE included the business in its "Organic Top 17".
The first cosmetic product was the pure Arganöl Argan-Hautöl, a certified organic argan skin oil. Everything else in the range grew from it, and the company still describes it as the heart of its skincare.
The early years also brought regional business recognition. The brand's certificates page lists it as a finalist in the Hessen Champions business award in 2006 [5], although the company's press page files the same finalist entry under a post dated 2021 [6]. It also reports a Hessian founders' prize for the jobs it created and first prize in a business-plan competition run by the newspaper F.A.Z.
In the same period, the founders say, the cooperatives came under pressure. Industrially produced argan oil reached the world market, made faster and more cheaply. For the women's cooperatives that threatened their income, their traditional knowledge and, in the company's telling, the future of the argan tree itself. In response the brand set up the "Argandor Projekt" with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), aimed at strengthening the cooperatives and securing fair structures for them. No year for the project is given.
Television followed in 2016, when the brand reports that its products appeared on the German broadcaster ZDF's series "Traumschiff". Over the years the name has also been styled in different ways. The legal entity and older press material use "Argand'Or", while the brand now presents itself as ARGANDOR or Argandor Cosmetic.
In October 2025 the company marked twenty years with an anniversary post signed by Ulla Bresink, titled "20 Jahre Arganöl Naturkosmetik – Wie aus einer Idee eine Marke wurde" ("20 years of argan-oil natural cosmetics – how an idea became a brand").
Ownership
ARGANDOR belongs to Argand'Or Cosmetic GmbH, a private limited company registered in Bad Homburg, with Rudolf Bresink as managing director [4]. The company describes itself as a family business, shaped by personal experience and long-term relationships. No parent group, outside investor or acquisition is documented.
Philosophy & positioning
ARGANDOR's tagline, "Arganöl – Hautpflege, die sich anpasst", translates as "argan oil – skincare that adapts". The idea behind it is that skin changes with the seasons, stress, hormones and daily life. According to the brand, its oils, serums and creams are designed to be combined, so a routine can shift with the skin's needs rather than being replaced with new products.
The company sums up its approach as "so viel wie nötig, so wenig wie möglich": as much as necessary, as little as possible. Its formulas are deliberately short, built on selected plant ingredients, and either lightly scented with natural scents or left unfragranced. New products are added, the founders say, only when they meaningfully complement the existing care.
The brand frames its mission as uniting "the original power of nature" with sound dermatological research. The aim, in its words, is care that supports and regenerates demanding skin and skin that is out of balance. The values it lists are transparent quality, respect for origin and nature, fair collaboration, and care guided by what the skin needs. The founders add that this long-term view, known today as "longevity", has always been their approach.
Development follows a split model. The product ideas and choice of ingredients come from the company itself. Formulas are then worked out to its specifications with the chemists of its manufacturing partners in Germany, tested for stability, shelf life and skin tolerance, and checked against natural-cosmetics standards [3]. The brand also advertises what it calls pharmacy-grade quality.
Products & innovation
Argan oil remains the core of every product. The range now covers face oils, creams, serums, cleansers, lip care, body care, nail care, and hair and scalp care, along with beauty tools and care sets. Beyond argan oil, the company points to macadamia nut oil, aloe vera and hyaluronic acid as supporting ingredients.
Among the products the brand highlights as bestsellers are the original Argan-Hautöl, the Argan-Serum Intensiv with hyaluronic acid, and the Arganöl Körperlotion, a body lotion. A notable exception to the argan theme is its Kaktusfeigenkernöl, a prickly pear seed oil also sourced from the Moroccan cooperatives. The Arganöl Augenpflege-Serum mit Hyaluron, an eye serum, and the Arganöl Reinigungsbalsam, a cleansing balm, have each won product awards. The company has explained on its blog why it does not offer skincare with UV protection.
All ARGANDOR products carry the ICADA mark for certified natural and organic cosmetics [5]. The company describes the range as vegan and free from animal testing, says it appears on PETA's cruelty-free and vegan list, and states that the formulas contain no microplastics, parabens or silicones. According to ARGANDOR, the Argan-Hautöl was tested for skin tolerance and allergies by the German testing institute Dermatest and rated "sehr gut" (very good) [2].
The brand ties its products to published research on argan oil. It cites work by Professor Robert Owen of the German Cancer Research Center in Heidelberg on the oil's high gamma-tocopherol content, a form of vitamin E that acts as an antioxidant. It also names the Munich immunologist Dr Peter Schleicher, Dr Rachid Soulimani of the University of Metz, and the biochemist Dr Zoubida Charrouf in Rabat as early scientific contacts. These are presented as sources the company drew on, not as formal research partnerships.
Sustainability
The brand's argan oil comes from wild-grown trees and is bought on fair terms from women's cooperatives in the Arganeraie. Today the cooperatives use mechanical screw presses, which the company says ease the heavy work while keeping production in the hands of the women in their village communities.
ARGANDOR presents the trade as both social and ecological. In its account, the cooperatives gave women their own income and greater standing, while demand for fairly produced oil helped keep the argan tree, whose deep roots hold back erosion and the spread of the desert. The company has also written about reducing cosmetics packaging.
Recognition
Most of the brand's recognition comes from awards and product tests. In May 2025 it was named "Best Argan Oil Brand – Germany 2025" at the LUXlife Health, Beauty & Wellness Awards, as announced in its own press release [9]. For 2026 it lists the title "Natural Cosmetic Brand of the Year" from the Innovation & Excellence Awards of the British publication Corporate Live Wire [5].
Individual products have collected further prizes, as listed by the company. The eye serum won the PETA Vegan Beauty Award 2024 for best vegan eye care. The cleansing balm received the ICADA innovation prize, and the hair oil took first place for most popular hair care with Greenstyle Magazine's FOGS awards. The prickly pear seed oil has been rated a comparison winner by the portal vergleich.org, and a newspaper buying guide, F.A.Z. Kaufkompass, named the Premium face oil its best face oil. An argan soap with mint and lemongrass was rated "sehr gut" by the consumer magazine ÖKO-TEST.
On the business side, the brand reports being included in an F.A.Z. Institute study of 25 innovation leaders in Germany. It also lists finalist places at the Beauty Forum Stars Award in 2021 for a fair and sustainable business concept, and among the top five in QVC's NEXT>IN sustainability start-up competition.
The company's press page also lists coverage in the German editions of magazines including ELLE, InStyle, Grazia, Freundin and Harper's Bazaar between 2020 and 2022.
Current status
ARGANDOR is active. Its blog carried new posts in August 2026, both on its prickly pear seed oil [7], and its press page lists coverage from early 2026. The brand sells through its own German-language online shop and through retailers listed in a store finder on its website; its press page mentions the Manufactum department stores and the Julia Grote catalogue among past stockists.
