Overview
Armand Basi is a Spanish fashion and fragrance house based in Barcelona. It grew out of a family knitwear business and is now known internationally for its clothing and its line of eau de toilette scents, the most recognised of which is the men's fragrance In Blue. The company remains active, running a current bilingual e-commerce store and ongoing fashion and fragrance collections.
The brand carries the name of the designer Armand Basi (1924–2009) and is closely tied to his family. Its own history page dates the fashion label's beginnings to the late 1980s [3], while Wikipedia records that Basi launched his eponymous brand in 1986 [7]. The deeper roots reach back further: in 1948 Armand and his brother Josep Basi founded a small knitting company, inspired by the knitted sweaters made by their mother, Mercé (also given as Mercedes) Sabi [7].

Origin and founders
The story begins with knitwear in an artisan workshop in Barcelona [3]. According to the company, the Basi brothers built on their mother's place in the apparel trade, and the business later passed to her granddaughters as well. In 1958 the family opened a factory on Balcells Street in Barcelona [7]. During the early 1960s the Basis held an exclusive contract to manufacture and distribute Lacoste products in Spain, before the house moved toward its own identity.
In 1986 the eponymous label launched, producing accessories, perfume, jewellery and watches alongside clothing [7]. From a single specialism in knitwear, the company expanded what it calls the "Armand universe" with fragrances, footwear and other lifestyle products.
History and milestones
Armand Basi presented collections on the catwalks of Paris, Moscow, Madrid and Barcelona and opened its first store in London, eventually reaching what the brand describes as a presence in more than 50 countries. Its campaigns drew well-known figures: the house cites work with photographer Norman Watson and architect José Manuel Ferrater, and lists models including Judit Mascó, Inés Sastre, Tony Ward and Naomi Campbell among those who appeared for it.
A footwear line followed in 2005, the same year the men's fragrance In Blue was released. At the founder's death in 2009 the business had branches in Antwerp, Moscow and London and was reportedly in talks to enter the Chinese market [7].
Ownership and the fragrance licence
The Armand Basi name and fashion house remain the Spanish brand of the Basi family. The company's own site does not name a perfume licensee. The fragrance line that appears in retailer listings is created and distributed by AB Parfums S.p.A., a Milan-based company that is part of the Give Back Beauty group; AB Parfums states that it "creates, develops and distributes worldwide the perfume lines of" several houses, Armand Basi among them [8]. Separately from that licensed range, the brand's own online store sells two in-house fragrances.
Philosophy and positioning
The house frames its identity around its home city. Armand Basi describes its values as the connection to Barcelona and the culture of its people, the promotion of young talent, local production, and quality and sustainability in materials and production methods [3]. That sustainability theme is most visible in its REMASTER initiative, which the company presents as circular fashion built on the idea of reimagine, remaster, reuse [1] — a line of remastered clothing rather than a formal certification programme.
Products and fragrances
In its fashion business the brand spans knits, outerwear, tailoring, dresses and accessories. Its best-known beauty product is the eau de toilette In Blue, a men's fragrance launched in 2005 and created by the perfumer Alberto Morillas, whose long career at the fragrance firm Firmenich has included widely sold scents such as CK One and Acqua di Giò [9]. In Blue was conceived as the male counterpart to the women's fragrance In Red [10], and fragrance-community reviews have described it as an early precursor to scents like Dior's Bleu [9]. The licensed range extends to other eau de toilette scents, including Homme and Femme.
Current status
Armand Basi is active. It operates a current Spanish-and-English e-commerce store carrying both fashion and fragrance collections, with a 2026 copyright notice on the site [1]. The fashion house remains rooted in Barcelona, while its licensed fragrance line continues to be produced and distributed internationally by AB Parfums.
