Summary

Overview

Arnikamill is a German skin-care ointment based on water extracts of arnica and chamomile flowers. It is made in Germany and sold under the name of biomo pharma GmbH, a family-run pharmaceutical company headquartered in Hennef in the Rhineland [4]. The brand consists of essentially a single product: an ointment intended for irritated, cracked or chapped skin, which its maker also recommends for massage of tired legs, bruises and sprains.

The ointment's own history is largely undocumented. Its consumer leaflet says that Arnikamill has proven itself "millions of times" over more than 100 years [4], but no founding year, original maker or launch date for the brand has been published, and no independent source confirms the century-long claim. What is well documented is the company behind it, which celebrated its fortieth anniversary in 2026.

Origin & founders

Neither the creator of Arnikamill nor the year it first appeared on the market is publicly known. The only time reference comes from the product itself, whose leaflet states, in each of its seven languages, that the ointment has been in use for over a century. That claim describes a tradition rather than a dated event, and it should not be read as a founding year.

It is also unclear whether biomo pharma developed the ointment itself or acquired it from an earlier owner. A 2013 trade-press portrait of the company's founder noted that he built the business partly by buying product approvals that their previous holders no longer wanted [7]. That article does not mention Arnikamill, however, so no link between the ointment and those purchases can be drawn.

Ownership

Arnikamill belongs to biomo pharma GmbH, which is named on the product leaflet as the responsible company and a retail listing names it as the manufacturer [8]. No sale or transfer of the brand is documented.

The company traces its own history to 1986. According to biomo's account of its history, Dr. Karl-Georg Mothes founded it that year in Siegburg under the name biomo Arzneimittel Vertriebs GmbH; it was renamed biomo Naturmedizin GmbH in 1987 and took its present name, biomo pharma GmbH, in 2000 [2]. The German pharmacy trade publication APOTHEKE ADHOC gives a slightly different picture of the first step, describing Biomo Naturmedizin as founded on 1 April 1986 [7]. Both accounts agree on the year and on the founder; they differ only in the name under which the firm started.

Mothes came to biomo from a career that included several posts at large pharmaceutical companies and, from 1983, his own consultancy, Kyna.Mo. Under his leadership the company grew, in its own words, from a garage business into a mid-sized, family-run pharmaceutical firm. It became more widely known in 2007, when it won key active substances, including omeprazole, in the first large AOK rebate-contract tender [2]. The trade press noted the same win, adding metformin to the list.

The business has since passed to a second generation. Diane Mothes-Grossmann, a pharmacist, joined the group in 2003, followed by Patrick Mothes in 2004, and the second generation entered the management in 2009. Both are named as authorised representatives of the company today. biomo says it employs more than 100 people, and it publishes a GMP certificate (confirming that it follows good manufacturing practice) and a manufacturing licence on its website.

Over the years the company's catalogue has moved well beyond generic medicines. biomo lists milestones such as its first antidiabetic medicine in 1998, its first antidepressant in 2000, a scabies treatment in 2012, a potency product in 2018 and a contraceptive in 2019. In 2013 it chose to focus on niche markets and on products that customers pay for themselves, and in 2020 it repositioned its acne brand aknederm through influencer marketing. The 2013 trade-press profile described the same shift towards lifestyle products. The firm describes its overall portfolio as spanning women's health, men's health, skin health and neurological health, together with generics and food supplements.

Philosophy & positioning

Arnikamill is positioned as a plant-based care ointment. Its leaflet says the care properties of arnica and chamomile help irritated, cracked and brittle skin to heal and support the skin's natural renewal. The same text describes the ingredients as soothing and itch-relieving, and says that a firm massage with the ointment relaxes the tissue and brings relief for bruises, swellings, sprains, tension in the legs and burning feet [4].

These are the company's own descriptions. No clinical study is cited in support of them, and no third-party assessment of the ointment's effects has been published.

The product's classification sits somewhere between medicine and skin care. biomo lists Arnikamill among its preparations, giving the dosage form as an ointment and arnica and chamomile flowers as its active components [3]. Its consumer leaflet, on the other hand, carries a standard cosmetic ingredient list, and an online pharmacy files the product under beauty and body care [8].

More broadly, biomo frames its work around quality "Made in Germany" and around access to affordable health care. The company says it combines high pharmaceutical standards with a consistent low-price strategy.

Products & innovation

The ointment's active part is described in precise terms. According to the leaflet, 100 grams of ointment contain 40.65 grams of a steam or hot-water extract, prepared in a 1:4 ratio from 1.66 grams of arnica flowers and 8.54 grams of chamomile flowers [4].

The full ingredient list shows a conventional cream base. Water comes first, followed by isopropyl myristate, stearic acid and chamomile extract, with arnica extract further down. The base also contains beeswax, glycerin, propylene glycol and cetyl alcohol, along with sorbic and ascorbic acid. The list ends with several declared fragrance allergens, among them limonene, linalool, citral, hexyl cinnamaldehyde and geraniol. With beeswax and fragrance allergens in the formula, the product carries no vegan or fragrance-free claim. No third-party certifications are documented for the brand.

Directions are simple: the ointment is applied thinly and evenly to the affected areas, once or several times a day as needed. The leaflet also carries clear cautions. Arnikamill can cause allergic reactions and should not be used by anyone sensitive to arnica or chamomile. It should not be applied to damaged or diseased skin and must be kept away from the eyes and mucous membranes.

The leaflet itself is printed in German, English, French, Spanish, Italian, Polish and Dutch.

Current status

Arnikamill is an active brand. As of October 2026 it appeared in the current product list on biomo pharma's website, with its multilingual consumer leaflet available for download [3], and a German online pharmacy showed the ointment as available [8]. At the same time, the brand's own web address, printed on the leaflet, forwarded visitors to the owner's online shop [6].

No social media accounts, awards or press coverage specific to Arnikamill are documented. Its public presence is therefore tied closely to that of its parent company, which marked forty years in business in 2026.
