Aromatherapy Associates

Aromatherapy Associates is a British wellness and personal-care brand founded in London in 1985 [1]. It makes essential-oil blends, bath and body oils, home fragrance and spa treatments, built around the idea that scent can affect both physical and emotional wellbeing. The company now operates as part of The Boots Group, under its No7 Beauty Company division, and so continues as an active brand under corporate ownership rather than as an independent house.

The brand grew out of the practice of two therapists, Geraldine Howard and Sue Beechey, and made its name in European spas, luxury hotels and prestige retailers before expanding internationally. Its Deep Relax bath and shower oil is repeatedly cited as its signature product.

Howard and Beechey began working as therapists in the early 1970s and trained under Micheline Arcier, an early figure in modern aromatherapy [6]. Accounts of Howard's path into the field differ slightly: an obituary in Cosmetics Business records that she studied Cosmetic Science and Beauty at the London College of Fashion before training with Arcier [6], while a Montecristo Magazine profile says she came to essential oils in the 1970s after leaving a career in biochemistry [7]. The two versions are not in deep conflict — both describe a move into aromatherapy during that decade.

In 1985 the pair's interest in blending oils turned into a business. They started by mixing their own formulas and offering treatments from a flat in Fulham, London, a small operation that grew over the following decades into an exporting brand.

Through the late 1980s, 1990s and 2000s the brand established itself in the European market, building a presence in high-end hotels, spas and well-known London retailers such as Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Liberty. By 2009 it reported annual turnover of around £3 million [6]. Early clients included Diana, Princess of Wales [6].

In 2013, Howard created the Inner Strength essential oil to support herself during cancer treatment, with proceeds going to the Defence Against Cancer Foundation. She received the CEW Achiever Award and the Leading Woman in Wellness Award at the Global Wellness Awards in 2015 [6]. Howard died in January 2016 after a long illness [6]; the brand continued operating after her death.

The company reports a range for its international reach. The Cosmetics Business obituary placed it in 40 countries [6], while the Montecristo profile from the same year described it as available in over 50 [7]. Both date from 2016; its distribution has likely shifted since.

The company frames its work around therapeutic aromatherapy — the idea that essential oils can have effects beyond pleasant scent. According to Aromatherapy Associates, its blends are hand-made in-house by a Master Blender and built to support both physical and emotional wellbeing. Howard summarised the mission in a line the brand still quotes: "I really do want the world to understand the benefits of therapeutic aromatherapy." The brand positions itself at the prestige end of the market, with a long-standing niche in luxury hotels, spas and high-end retailers.

The brand's range covers bath, shower and body oils, body care, home fragrance and spa treatments. Its signature blends include Deep Relax, aimed at sleep and relaxation, alongside Revive Morning, De-Stress Mind and De-Stress Muscle. The Deep Relax bath and shower oil — one of the first products Howard created, using vetivert, camomile and sandalwood — is described as the brand's flagship. Home fragrance is sold under the name The Atomiser.

The company says it sources essential oils from specific origins, citing camomile hand-harvested in Morocco and vetivert grown in Haiti and Java. It describes a hand-blending process in which oils are combined in small "micro blends" and each oil is assessed by the Master Blender before use.

Aromatherapy Associates describes its products as vegan and cruelty-free, and says it takes part in the Cruelty Free International approval programme. It states that its formulas are free from parabens, phthalates and SLS.

The brand's founder drew industry recognition in the mid-2010s, including the CEW Achiever Award and a Leading Woman in Wellness Award at the Global Wellness Awards in 2015. The brand and its founder were the subject of trade and lifestyle press coverage around that period, including a Montecristo Magazine profile that called it one of the United Kingdom's largest beauty exports [7].

Aromatherapy Associates became a Certified B Corp in 2020 [3]. The company says its headquarters run on 100% renewable energy and that it has removed more than 1.5 tonnes of virgin plastic since 2020. It states that retail cartons use FSC-certified paper and reports community work including a £25,000 donation to the mental-health charity Mind in 2021 and over £100,000 in products given to NHS workers and beauty banks during the COVID-19 pandemic. Its stated future targets include carbon neutrality by 2027 and fully recyclable or compostable plastic packaging by 2026.
