Summary

Overview

AROMATICA is a South Korean beauty brand founded in 2004 by Jerry Kim, described as a first-generation aromatherapist [11]. Based in Seoul, with manufacturing at a factory in Osan, the company makes haircare, skincare and body products built around natural essential oils rather than synthetic fragrance. It is best known for a rosemary-centred scalp and haircare range, and positions itself within the clean-beauty and sustainable-beauty corner of K-beauty.

The brand remains active. Its global e-commerce store ships internationally from South Korea, it sells through Olive Young and its own Seoul stores, and it has continued to publish sustainability initiatives into 2025.

Origin & founders

According to the company, the idea for AROMATICA grew out of a stay in Australia, where Kim encountered aromatherapy culture and resolved to bring it to Korea. After learning that petroleum-derived synthetic fragrances were widely used in food and cosmetics, he set out to replace them with natural essential oils, which the brand records as the starting point of AROMATICA in 2004 [2]. Production began modestly: the company says its Osan "Smart Factory" started with a single 100-kilogram kettle, distilling herbal extracts in-house through methods such as steam distillation and decoction.

Kim's stated mission, quoted on the brand's about page, is to "bring aromatherapy culture to Korea" and to "drive synthetic fragrances off the earth." The company frames its approach around two questions — what to put in a formula and what to leave out — and says it favours "honest standards over flashy marketing."

History & milestones

A defining strand of AROMATICA's history is its early alignment with ingredient-safety standards. In 2009 the company introduced the US Environmental Working Group's Skin Deep cosmetics database to South Korea, which it describes as a first for the country and as having opened "the era of clean beauty" there [2]. (One retailer-affiliated source instead dates Kim's launch of the brand to 2014 [19]; brand-site, Tatler Asia, Harper's Bazaar Malaysia and Grazia Malaysia all place the founding in 2004 [9].) The brand registered its ingredients in the Skin Deep database in 2010 and obtained ECOCERT natural and organic certification in 2011.

Further certifications followed: ISO 22716 cosmetics good-manufacturing-practice in 2014, a Vegan Society partnership from 2015, and in 2016 what the company states was the first EWG VERIFIED certification by a Korean manufacturing brand for more than twenty products [2]. COSMOS organic certification came in 2019. From 2021 the brand installed solar panels at its factory and moved toward recycled packaging, and in 2023 it entered the Malaysian market through Sephora [10].

Philosophy & positioning

AROMATICA describes its purpose as creating "safe and honest beauty" with "responsible choices for both people and the planet," and lists ingredient transparency, sustainability, natural aromatherapy and vegan principles among its values. It uses organic herbal hydrosols as formula bases and substitutes plant-based oils such as jojoba for mineral oils. The brand operates its own factory rather than outsourcing production — a point its founder ties to verifying that ingredients are not animal-tested. Editorially it is treated as a premium, sustainability-led K-beauty label; Tatler Asia has described it as a "cult-favorite leader in sustainable beauty across South Korea and Asia" [9].

Products & innovation

The brand's signature line is built on rosemary. Its Rosemary Scalp Scaling Shampoo has placed at the Olive Young Awards run by Korea's leading beauty retail chain [13], and one reviewer reports it is formulated with 32.7% rosemary leaf extract, among the highest concentrations in a K-beauty shampoo [15]. The wider rosemary range includes a Root Enhancer, a Hair Thickening Conditioner and a Scalp Scrub. In feminine care, the company says its Pure & Soft Feminine Wash ranked No. 1 in Olive Young's W-Care category for three consecutive years [16]. Beyond hair, the catalogue spans skincare and body care, drawing on ingredients such as tea tree, calendula, lavender, bergamot and lemongrass. AROMATICA also says it has developed proprietary know-how in essential-oil formulation stability.

Sustainability

Sustainability is central to how AROMATICA presents itself, and the brand reports its founder did not originally set out with that goal — telling Tatler Asia, "We didn't set out to become a sustainable brand at all actually." The company says it is a member of the Science Based Targets initiative, which it states made it the first Korean beauty brand approved, and has pledged to cut its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% by 2030 against a 2023 baseline [3]. Other stated commitments include expanding RSPO-certified raw materials to 50% by 2030 and a refill programme that, by 2025, offered 27 refill packs alongside a monthly "Refill Day."

Sources differ on the brand's recycled-packaging figures. AROMATICA's 2024 sustainability page states it uses "100% recycled clear PET across its entire line of PET containers" [3], while an earlier Tatler Asia feature reported that 97% of its container products were made from recycled transparent PET and recycled glass [9]; the lower figure pre-dates the brand's later disclosed milestone.

Recognition

AROMATICA's recognition concentrates in clean-beauty and environmental categories. The company states it was the first Korean brand named an EWG Safe Cosmetics Champion, in 2011, and in 2021 it received a Water Environment Award from South Korea's Ministry of Environment together with broadcaster SBS and the Federation of Environmental Movement of Korea [9]. Its rosemary shampoo and feminine wash have both topped Olive Young Award categories. The brand has been covered by Tatler Asia, Harper's Bazaar Malaysia, Grazia Malaysia and Cosmetics Design Asia, and its Calendula Juicy Cream was reviewed positively by the independent science blog Lab Muffin Beauty Science.

Current status

AROMATICA is active and multi-regional. It runs an international Shopify store, maintains retail distribution through Olive Young and its own stores in Seoul, and entered Sephora Malaysia in 2023. The most recent activity recorded in the source material is from 2025, including the launch of its "Project Soil" ecosystem-restoration initiative and the start of its monthly Refill Day programme.
