Summary

Overview

Artemis of Switzerland is a Swiss skincare and fragrance brand based in Bühler, in the canton of Appenzell Ausserrhoden. It is the consumer-facing line of Helvecos AG, a Swiss company that markets its own brands and licensed brands through specialist retail rather than mass distribution [12]. The brand builds its identity around Swiss manufacturing and a positioning it calls "Hybrid Skincare" — a pairing of alpine botanical ingredients with laboratory-developed compounds.

The company is active. Its products are sold across Switzerland, the European Union and, according to the brand, more than 20 countries, through perfumeries, drugstores, pharmacies and department stores, alongside a direct-to-consumer webshop. A precise founding year for the Artemis line is not documented; the parent company provides the clearest dated anchor (see Ownership).

Philosophy and positioning

Artemis of Switzerland frames its approach as "the symbiosis of science and nature," describing a method that takes "the best of both worlds" while removing what it considers the drawbacks of each. The tagline used across the brand's materials is "Natural Hightech from Switzerland." In practice this means combining alpine plant extracts with proprietary, trademarked ingredient systems.

Swiss origin is central to the brand's self-presentation. The company holds the Swiss COS certification, an industry seal indicating that products are developed and produced in Switzerland, which the brand presents as protection against competitors that use Swiss imagery without genuine Swiss production. Parent company Helvecos describes Swiss cosmetics as enjoying an "unmatched reputation" and notes that Swiss-origin goods are among the most frequently counterfeited [10].

The brand also states a set of formulation choices: products are described as free of parabens and paraffin (mineral) oils, free of 26 allergenic fragrance components, and primarily vegan, with stated exceptions such as beeswax and lactic acid derivatives. Production is described as GMP-compliant (Good Manufacturing Practice).

Products and innovation

The brand's range is organised into multiple lines, including Skin Architects, Skin Aquatics, Med, Men, Skin Supremes, Skin Balance, Skin Specialists, Skinlove and Swiss Milk. Much of the product narrative centres on a set of proprietary compounds the company has trademarked, among them the Hydrocalmin Compound, GABAretinate Compound, SwissSummit Compound and Hydromatifying Compound, along with an Anti-Irritation Complex and a Rosacea Complex.

Two lines anchor the anti-ageing and hydration ends of the range. The Skin Architects line is built on the GABAretinate Compound, which combines edelweiss extract, GABA and tocoretinate (a retinol and vitamin E combination) and targets early fine lines; the line spans six products. The Skin Aquatics line is built on the Hydrocalmin Compound, featuring edelweiss extract, which the company associates with an antioxidant, cell-protecting effect. Across its homepage the brand also promotes a complex it calls SenoCellTec, which it says could reduce the number of senescent (aged) cells in the skin.

Independent ingredient-analysis platforms have reached mixed conclusions about specific products. What's In My Jar assigned the Artemis Med Lipid Replenishing Face Cream an efficacy score of 50 out of 100 and a medium irritation risk, noting that some beneficial ingredients appeared at concentrations too low for meaningful effect [14]. Skin Bliss, reviewing the Skin Aquatics Moisturising Essence, called it a good option for oily skin but a poor one for dry skin and described it as made with "low quality ingredients" [13].

Beyond skincare, the brand extended into fragrance with Artemis Men, an eau de toilette introduced in 2015 through Douglas perfumeries [15].

Ownership

The brand is owned by Helvecos AG, registered in the Swiss commercial registry on 8 December 1999 and based at Trogenerstrasse 23 in Bühler [12]. Because no separate founding date for the Artemis line could be confirmed, this 1999 parent-company registration is the earliest verifiable date associated with the business; the first dated brand milestone in the available record is the 2015 fragrance launch [15]. The Artemis line should therefore not be assumed to date to 1999 — that year belongs to the parent company.

Helvecos markets several brands beyond Artemis of Switzerland, including Zwyer Caviar Skincare and Beauty SPA, and describes its model as selling through "selective qualified specialized trade" rather than mass retail [10]. The company maintains a registered Swiss office in Bühler and an EU office in Wiesbaden, Germany.

Company-registry records show that the current Helvecos AG board includes members based in Hangzhou, China — listed as Zhengjian Jiang (president) and Jianhong Zhou — alongside a Switzerland-based member, with blueAUDIT GmbH appointed as auditor in June 2025 [12].

Sustainability and social initiatives

The company describes sustainability as central to its production. Stated commitments include the use of renewable energy, water sourced within Switzerland, and full wastewater recycling to Swiss standards. Artemis also reports a partnership with Steig Wohnen und Arbeit, a Swiss association in the Appenzell region, which provides employment to people with disabilities, including those with cognitive impairments, with what the company calls fair remuneration and opportunities for social integration.

Cruelty-free status

The brand's cruelty-free status is contested in the available sources. On its own about page, the company states "No animal testing" [2]. The independent review platform Skin Bliss, however, classifies Artemis of Switzerland as not cruelty-free [13]. Skin Bliss generally bases such determinations on third-party certifications — Leaping Bunny, PETA and similar programs — rather than a brand's self-declaration, and no such certification is visible for Artemis. The discrepancy may relate to distribution in markets where animal testing is required for imported cosmetics; the parent company's board includes members based in mainland China, where such testing has historically applied to imports. The two positions are presented here as stated by their respective sources.

Current status

Artemis of Switzerland remains in operation. Its parent, Helvecos AG, is listed as active in the Swiss commercial registry, with the most recent management-change notification dated 23 October 2025 and a new auditor appointed earlier that year [12]. The brand continues to sell directly and through specialist retail across Switzerland, the EU and other markets.
