Overview
Atelier des Ors is a French niche fragrance house founded in Grasse in 2015 by Jean-Philippe Clermont [1]. It produces luxury perfumes built around a single visual signature: flakes of 24-carat gold suspended inside each bottle. The house works in the tradition of French haute parfumerie and remains independent, marking its tenth anniversary in 2025 [6].
The brand is based at Villa Primerose, a neoclassical building in Grasse, the town long regarded as the birthplace of French perfumery. From the start, Clermont developed the fragrances with perfumer Marie Salamagne, and the two have described their work as a "four-handed creation" — a continuing partnership rather than a one-off commission.
Origin & founders
Jean-Philippe Clermont grew up in Brittany, in a family whose retail business specialised in fine table glass and china — surroundings he later credited with shaping his eye for craftsmanship and design. When he was 17 his family moved to the French West Indies, and he went on to travel widely across Asia and the Middle East, including Singapore, Lebanon and Dubai. He has said those sensory experiences abroad, from spices in Caribbean markets to pastries on Lebanese streets, fed the olfactory imagination behind the house. After a period working with handmade cigars in Paris, he turned to perfume as an art form [7].
Clermont founded Atelier des Ors in 2015 to express what he called his personal interpretation of French haute parfumerie. He described the aim plainly: "I developed Atelier des Ors to bring my passion for art, refined craftsmanship and beauty together" [7]. For the creative side he partnered with Marie Salamagne, a perfumer at Firmenich (now dsm-firmenich), whom he met through a friend. Salamagne has spoken of composing perfumes as if they were paintings, where contrasting tones build the whole.
History & milestones
The founding collection comprised five fragrances — Aube Rubis, Lune Féline, Rose Omeyyade, Cuir Sacré and Larmes du Désert. The house presented Iris Fauve at the Pitti Fragranze trade fair in Florence in September 2016, and released Musc Immortel as an exclusive limited edition at Harrods in London [7]. The range has since expanded into several themed collections, among them the Black collection, drawn from Clermont's travels in the Middle East, and the White collection, a trio inspired by Gustav Klimt's Beethoven Frieze.
In 2025 the house marked ten years in business, an anniversary covered by the French title Luxe Magazine in a feature on the brand's first decade [6].
Philosophy & positioning
Atelier des Ors presents perfumery as a living art form, a stance it sums up under the idea of "Belle Parfumerie." According to the company, "perfume is more than a fragrance: it's an experience, a story, a creative act." The house states its mission as wanting "to move you" by putting an artistic vision of perfumery at the centre of daily life, and it frames its founders as "the archivists of your olfactory memory."
Gold is central to that positioning, and the house treats it as more than decoration. In Clermont's words, the metal "symbolises the pursuit of perfection and the search for the absolute in ancient times," and he draws a parallel to the origins of perfume itself, noting that incense was once burned to communicate with the divine [7]. The house emblem, a seahorse, refers to the hippocampus, the part of the brain that processes smell and memory. Independent reviewers place the brand among French niche houses "present since 2015," describing its compositions as woody, close to the skin and largely unisex [8].
Products & innovation
The bottles are sculptural and finished in an Art Deco idiom, with the perfume's golden tint catching the suspended gold leaf. Signature releases include Lune Féline, built on cardamom and ambergris; Rose Omeyyade, pairing Damascus rose with sandalwood; and Cuir Sacré, a restrained suede-leather scent the house frames as elegant rather than loud. Reviewers note a recurring woodiness across the line and recommend wearing the fragrances on skin rather than testing them on paper [8].
Materials are sourced through dsm-firmenich's NaturalsTogether programme, which the company describes as a traceable and ethical supply chain, and the gold is supplied through a partnership with Aurum, presented as "ethical 24K gold" [3]. The house calls its approach "slow perfumery," emphasising time and quality over volume.
Sustainability
Atelier des Ors says its bottles are made by a French glassmaker and that all packaging is carried out in France. The company offers refills for several fragrances — among them Lune Féline, Rose Omeyyade, Nuda Veritas, Pink Me Up and Noir By Night — which it frames as a more durable, lower-waste alternative to buying a new bottle each time [3]. The brand is a member of Grasse Expertise, an organisation founded in 2017 that promotes local perfume craftsmanship and the cultivation of aromatic plants; Grasse's perfumery savoir-faire was recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2018 [5].
Current status
Atelier des Ors remains active and independent. It operates a direct online store with worldwide delivery, runs current social-media accounts, and was the subject of editorial coverage as recently as February 2025 around its tenth anniversary [6]. Its perfumes are also sold through third-party stockists, including Harrods [7].
