Overview
Ätheria is a small line of bath additives built around essential oils, made and sold by the German pharmacy supplier WEPA Apothekenbedarf GmbH & Co KG of Hillscheid [2]. It does not operate as a stand-alone company or keep its own website. Instead it sits inside WEPA's umbrella range, marketed as "WEPA – Die Apothekenmarke" ("the pharmacy brand"), where it appears as one segment among nasal sprays, heat patches, vitamin drinks and pill organisers [3].
The line consists of two products: an adult bath called the Gesundheitsbad ("health bath") and a milder Kinderbad ("children's bath") for children from the age of three. Both are positioned for rest and comfort during the cold season and are sold through pharmacies. The brand is active, although its most recent printed materials date from 2019.
History & milestones
When the Ätheria line was introduced has not been publicly documented, and no founder is associated with it. Its story is largely the story of its owner. In an interview with the German business magazine Wirtschaftsforum, WEPA's head of marketing, Raphael de Sá Almeida, said the company was founded in 1883 in the Westerwald region, where it originally made clay vessels for storing remedies [10]. He described that origin as the start of the firm's expertise in pharmaceutical packaging.
From there WEPA grew into a broad supplier to pharmacies. The interview names the introduction of the Topitec mixing system in 1998, a system for preparing prescriptions in the pharmacy, as a major milestone. De Sá Almeida also said WEPA leads the pharmacy market for its hot lemon drink and its blood pressure monitors, and that it supplies pharmacies with printed customer-loyalty items such as notepads and tissues. These are the company's own statements.
The company's figures for its own age vary slightly from page to page. Its "about us" page refers to 140 years of German company history [4], while its concept page speaks of more than 135 years [3]. Neither figure applies to the Ätheria line itself, whose age is unknown.
The only dated point in Ätheria's own history is July 2019. The current patient brochure and both package leaflets carry that date in their print codes. This marks the version of the documents rather than a launch, and no later revision has appeared.
Ownership
Ätheria belongs to WEPA Apothekenbedarf GmbH & Co KG, a pharmacy supplier based in Hillscheid, Germany [4]. The product page presents the baths as coming "von WEPA – Die Apothekenmarke", and the packaging carries the WEPA company name and Hillscheid address. No change of ownership or acquisition is documented.
Within the WEPA group, Ätheria sits alongside several other product lines, including the WEPA range itself, Mosquito, Alpenländer and ApoLine. The baths share shelf space on the company's website with WEPA's nasal rinses, inhalation solutions and eye drops under a heading for nose, allergy and colds.
Philosophy & positioning
Ätheria's printed materials describe the line as specialising in the use of essential oils in bath additives. The patient brochure ties this to aromatherapy, which it calls a healing practice known since antiquity [6]. According to the brochure, the oils are drawn from blossoms, leaves, needles, seeds, fruit, herbs, bark and roots of selected plants, using elaborate processes intended to keep them pure.
Quality is the line's main selling point. The company says Ätheria uses only substances of the highest quality and purity, of pharmacopoeia grade, meaning they meet the standards set out in the official reference books that govern medicines. The brochure adds that long experience in obtaining the oils, professional cultivation and careful processing of the plants are taken for granted. These are the brand's own descriptions; no independent certification of them is documented.
The tone of the materials is that of a pharmacy health product rather than a cosmetic. The brochure includes general advice for the cold season, such as rest, fresh air, fruit and vegetables, eight hours of sleep and plenty of fluids. It also prints a simple table to help readers tell a common cold from true influenza, and urges anyone whose symptoms worsen sharply to see a doctor. Readers with questions are directed to their pharmacist. The leaflets close with the line "Ätheria® wünscht Ihnen immer beste Gesundheit!", which translates roughly as "Ätheria wishes you good health, always."
Online pharmacies reflect this positioning. The retailer aponeo, for example, files the adult bath under medicines, in a sub-category for cold baths [9].
Products & innovation
### Gesundheitsbad
The adult product is described as a "revitalising health bath", meant for a restful break and as a comfort during colds. Its blend of essential oils combines eucalyptus, spruce needle, dwarf mountain pine, lemon and menthol. Because it contains menthol, the company states that it is suitable for adults only, and the retailer listing adds that it should not be used on babies or small children.
The recommended bath is 10 to 20 minutes at 35 to 38 °C, with two capfuls enough for a full bath. The brochure also suggests a few rules for getting the most from it: wait at least two hours after a large meal, avoid water that is too hot, and rest for at least half an hour afterwards. It is sold in a 125 ml bottle, in single 20 ml sachets and in a multipack of ten sachets. The leaflet calls the bottle "environmentally friendly" without giving details, and no wider sustainability goals are stated.
### Kinderbad
The children's bath uses a slightly different blend: eucalyptus, pine needle, spruce needle, dwarf mountain pine, spearmint and lemon. The package leaflet says it is suitable from age three because it contains neither menthol nor camphor [8]. The suggested bath is shorter and cooler, at 10 to 15 minutes and 36 to 37 °C. The leaflets advise against using the products during pregnancy.
The published ingredient list shows that the oils are only part of the formula. Alongside them, the children's bath contains water, isopropyl alcohol, several surfactants, added fragrance (parfum) and two synthetic colourants. The adult product's leaflet likewise lists fragrance and colourants. The products are therefore not fragrance-free, despite their focus on natural oils.
### Skin claims
Both products are said to contain care ingredients that leave the skin feeling comfortable and protect it from drying out, and both are said to leave no residue in the bathtub. The wording of the main skin claim differs between sources. The 2019 package leaflet says skin tolerance was "dermatologically tested" (dermatologisch getestet) [7], while the current product page says skin tolerance has been "dermatologically confirmed" (dermatologisch bestätigt) [2]. The substance of both statements is the same skin-tolerance test; the published materials do not describe the study behind it.
The retailer listing, whose text is supplied by WEPA, adds further claims that do not appear on the current product page: that the adult bath is soap-free, pH-neutral and free of preservatives, and that it contains five natural essential oils of pharmacopoeia quality [9].
Current status
As of October 2026, both Ätheria baths remained listed on the WEPA product site in all package sizes, the concept page still named the line as a segment, and the 2019 brochure and leaflets were available for download [2]. Online pharmacies continued to list the products. No new products, reformulations or news specific to the line have been announced, and the brand has no social media accounts of its own; it is represented through WEPA's channels. Its distribution is documented through pharmacies in Germany, including online pharmacies.
