Summary

Overview

Atopik is a Finnish natural-cosmetics brand making pharmacy skincare for sensitive and atopic skin. Its products are developed and manufactured in Helsinki, and the line is sold in Finland through pharmacies and online pharmacies. According to the brand, the Atopik series began in a Finnish family business in 2017 [2], and it is now part of the family-owned Berner Group, in whose brand portfolio it is listed [4].

The brand grew out of personal experience with reactive skin. Atopik says becoming sensitised to common cosmetic raw materials created new demands on skincare, and that the founders' own experiences of sensitive-skin needs continue to guide product development. Its stated purpose is to help people with sensitive skin find harmony with their own skin [2].

Origins

Atopik traces the start of its series to 2017, when it launched as a domestic natural-cosmetics line sold through pharmacies [2][7]. The brand is closely tied to Naviter Oy, a Helsinki company that develops and manufactures skin and hair cosmetics in its own production facility and specialises in professional, medical and eco-friendly products for sensitive skin [5]. Sources differ on which date marks the brand's beginning: the Atopik site dates the series to 2017 [2], while Naviter, the company that develops and manufactures it, was itself founded in 2012 [9]. These are distinct: 2017 is the launch of the Atopik brand, whereas 2012 refers to the manufacturer behind it.

The whole product range is developed and made in Helsinki, a point of domestic origin the brand returns to repeatedly [2].

Products and positioning

Atopik is positioned as a pharmacy series (apteekkisarja) for sensitive, dry and atopic skin. At launch the range was built around two lines, Sensitive and Anti-Age, with the fragrance-free Sensitive line aimed at the basic care of sensitive and dry skin at any age. The current site organises products into five categories: Sensitive, Anti-Age, Hydrate, Balance, and a Sun and self-tanning line.

The company says the products' efficacy rests on Finnish organic oat extract, oat oil and natural bilberry extract, combined with skin-identical ingredients found naturally in skin: prebiotics, ceramides, amino acids and hyaluronic acid. The brand explains its interest in prebiotics in barrier terms, arguing that they increase the activity and amount of probiotics in the skin so that the protective layer is strengthened. For sun care it uses physical, mineral sunscreens suitable for the whole family.

Atopik states that all its products are tested in cooperation with a dermatologist on people with sensitive skin.

Sustainability and certification

The full range is FI-Natura-certified vegan natural cosmetics, and is described as cruelty-free and gluten-free [6]; FI-Natura requires a minimum of 95% natural ingredients and recyclable packaging. The line also carries the Leaping Bunny mark for cruelty-free standards [4]. In 2018 the Atopik All Over Balm was announced as the first cosmetic product to use Sulapac, a biodegradable packaging material, as its primary packaging [5].

05 /

Ownership

Atopik sits within a two-part structure. The consumer brand is listed in the portfolio of Berner Oy, a Finnish family company, while Naviter Oy develops and manufactures the products [4][5]. The atopik.fi about page frames this as a series that began in a Finnish family business in 2017 and is now part of the Berner Group [2].

Current status

Atopik is active. It runs a live e-commerce site carrying its full range, maintains active Instagram and Facebook channels as @atopikfinland, and is sold through Finnish pharmacies and e-pharmacies; it appears in Berner Oy's current brand portfolio [1][4]. Its primary market is Finland. The brand's tagline is "Ylpeästi herkkä," which it renders in English as "Proudly Sensitive" [1].
