Summary

Overview

B. Braun is a German medical-technology and pharmaceutical company headquartered in Melsungen, Germany. Its story begins in 1839 with a local pharmacy that sold medicinal herbs by mail to customers around the country [9]. Close to two centuries later, the business is still controlled by the Braun family and has grown into a group with more than 63,000 employees and offices and production facilities in more than 60 countries.

B. Braun is not a cosmetics company. Most of what it makes is used in professional health care: infusion systems, surgical instruments, sutures, kidney-care equipment and infection-prevention products. A handful of its lines do reach ordinary households, however, above all the Prontosan wound-care range and the Askina Scar Repair silicone patch, and these skin-related products are the reason the company appears alongside beauty and personal-care brands. The group is active, with a steady flow of results, partnerships and clinical research announced through 2026.

Origin & founders

The business traces its beginning to a small pharmacy in Melsungen that Julius Wilhelm Braun bought in 1839 [10]. From there the business sold medicinal herbs by mail, reaching customers across Germany rather than only in its home town.

The first big change came with the next generation. In 1864 Julius's son Bernhard took over the business and widened the herbal range by starting to manufacture pharmaceuticals himself. That move, from dispensing remedies to producing them, set the direction the company has followed ever since.

Leadership has passed down the family line. Otto Braun, a great-grandson of the founder, oversaw the business for much of the 20th century. According to the family-business magazine Tharawat, writing in 2020, the company was by then in its sixth generation of family involvement.

History & milestones

In the 20th century the company moved further into hospital products. Wikipedia credits the company with developing the first plastic container for intravenous (I.V.) solutions, the fluids given through a drip. The same article discusses this within its account of the 1960s while naming 1956 as the year; this article follows 1956.

The most dramatic expansion happened under Otto Braun's son, Ludwig Georg Braun, who took charge in 1977. Tharawat reports that he turned a business with annual sales of about $24 million into a group earning around $8 billion a year [10].

A major step came in 1998, when Aesculap AG was incorporated into the B. Braun Group [9]. Aesculap had been founded in 1867 in Tuttlingen by Gottfried Jetter. Its education forum, the Aesculap Academy, marked 30 years in 2025; according to B. Braun, it has drawn more than two million participants worldwide.

The company also built a long presence outside Germany. Its Swiss business began in Entlebuch, in the canton of Lucerne, and the group says it has relied on Switzerland as a location for more than 50 years. Today the Swiss headquarters sits in Sempach, which also hosts a centre of excellence for infection prevention and kidney-related fluids, while Crissier is home to a centre of excellence for plasma volume replacement solutions. The country has three production sites, among them a plant in Escholzmatt that makes single-use items for injections and infusions for both domestic and international use.

At the top of the family business, a generational handover took place in 2011. Ludwig Georg Braun stepped down as chairman, and his two children, Anna Maria Braun and Otto Philipp Braun, succeeded him on the supervisory board. Otto Philipp Braun later left the board, in 2017.

Recent years have focused on digital technology and compliance. In February 2024, B. Braun SE published a policy statement on human rights and environmental due diligence in accordance with Germany's Supply Chain Due Diligence Act. In September 2025 the company received ISO 27001 certification, an international standard for information security, which it announced under the heading of digital medical technology. In the same month it announced the purchase of True Digital Surgery, a company working in digital microsurgery [8].

Ownership

B. Braun is a family-owned company. Tharawat reported in 2020 that eight members of the Braun family were billionaires through their shared ownership of the business, and that Otto Philipp Braun alone held 23 per cent of it [10]. The same profile named Anna Maria Braun as chief executive at that time.

The group's legal entity appears in the company's own 2024 press material as B. Braun SE, whose management board adopted the human-rights policy statement on 7 February 2024 [8]. Older references, including the 2020 Tharawat profile and the name of the group's YouTube channel, use the name B. Braun Melsungen.

The group operates through national companies and specialist subsidiaries. In Switzerland, for example, the local business trades as B. Braun Medical AG; a separate company, B. Braun Medical Care AG, runs nephrology and dialysis centres in Zürich, and SteriLog AG in Lucerne provides services for reprocessing and managing medical instruments.

Two acquisitions stand out in the company's history. The first is Aesculap in 1998. The second is True Digital Surgery in 2025, which B. Braun said would strengthen its technology and market share in digital microsurgery.

Philosophy & positioning

B. Braun sums up its purpose in one sentence: "We protect and improve the health of people around the world." Its brand line is "Sharing Expertise", which the company presents as its core principle of working as a true partner. On its Swiss website the company describes itself as a reliable partner that develops intelligent solutions and sets standards for better health care, and it calls itself one of the world's leading medical-technology companies. It also says it has shaped health care with a pioneering spirit for more than 180 years.

The company lists six values. Sustainability comes first, followed by diversity, innovation, accountability, trust and efficiency. Under trust, it says decisions are made at the lowest possible level; under innovation, it speaks of advancing technology to improve clinical results, care costs and patient satisfaction.

The sustainability value is worded in two slightly different ways on the same Swiss website. The dedicated vision-and-values page says the company lives responsibly and makes business decisions in the interest of future generations [2]. The homepage summary says it acts sustainably and makes business decisions with an eye on the generations that follow [1]. The meaning is the same in both cases.

B. Braun's brand guidelines rest on two ideas the company calls humanity and technological progress. It describes itself as having "always been a human-centered brand" while also pointing to its pioneering spirit and commitment to digital innovation. Four words are meant to guide how the brand looks and speaks: clear, caring, progressive and vivid. The visual identity includes a distinctive colour range, simple pictograms and the Rotis company typeface. On the culture side, the company says that every business is only as good as the people who work for it.

Products & innovation

According to its Swiss site, B. Braun's portfolio includes more than 5,000 products. They range from infusion pumps and systems to surgical instruments, sutures, stoma-care products, disinfectants and wound-care items. The company is also active in nutrition therapy, pain therapy, oncology, neurosurgery, dentistry and blood treatment outside the body, such as dialysis. Beyond individual products, it offers hospitals services including customer-specific sets, intelligent infusion management, surgical asset and supply management, medication management in oncology and technical service.

The products most relevant to skin care are aimed at wounds and scars. The Prontosan line consists of two items meant to be used together at home or on the go: Prontosan Wundspray, a spray for cleaning the wound and the skin around it, and Prontosan acute Wundgel, a gel applied afterwards under a breathable dressing. The Swiss site calls them modern Swiss medical products and lists grazes, cuts, lacerations and minor burns as typical uses, including in children and newborns.

B. Braun makes several claims for the range. It says Prontosan relieves pain, helps prevent wound infection, supports fast healing and minimises scarring. It describes the products as easy to use and states that their effectiveness has been clinically proven [7]. The company explains the approach with the principle of moist wound healing, saying that wounds heal better and faster in a moist environment because crusts are avoided and scarring is reduced.

The second consumer-facing product is Askina Scar Repair, a soft, self-adhesive silicone patch. The company positions it for the care of scars from operations, caesarean sections and burns, and says it helps prevent unsightly scarring so that people feel comfortable in their own skin again.

In hospitals, B. Braun's hygiene products are part of a wider infection-prevention programme. Prontoderm is a decolonising body wash, meaning a wash designed to remove germs from the skin before a hospital stay or surgery. The company says it works against multi-drug-resistant organisms such as MRSA, ESBL and VRE, germs that are resistant to several antibiotics. Alongside it, B. Braun sells Meliseptol acute, an alcohol-based surface disinfectant, and a touch-free dispenser. The company stresses that hands are one of the main routes by which infections spread and that regular, correct hand hygiene is among the most effective ways to prevent them.

Research and new technology feature prominently in the group's recent announcements. In 2026 B. Braun deepened its strategic collaboration with Dräger to build connected systems for acute care. In July 2026 it announced the enrolment of the first patient in the BASKET BALL trial, which compares a treatment using only drug-coated balloons with the use of drug-eluting stents in complex procedures on the heart's arteries. The purchase of True Digital Surgery added digital microsurgery to the portfolio.

Recognition

In 2009, B. Braun was named the best company in Germany to work for, according to Wikipedia. Tharawat Magazine included the Braun family in its coverage of family businesses in 2020, profiling the succession from the 1839 pharmacy to the present generation. The 2025 ISO 27001 certification is a formal recognition of the group's information-security practices rather than an award.

Controversies

In 1969 B. Braun released Lyodura, a graft product. It was used in neurosurgery as a patch material on the brain. The grafts transmitted Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease, a rare brain disease, and Wikipedia states that at least 154 people have been diagnosed with the disease as a result of Lyodura [9].

In 2010 the US unit, B. Braun Medical, agreed to pay $14.7 million for having caused the US Medicaid programme to pay inflated amounts for dozens of its products [9].

Wikipedia also records that, as of December 2024, B. Braun was continuing its operations in Russia [9].

Current status

B. Braun is an active, globally operating company. In March 2026 it reported its results for fiscal year 2025 under the headline "B. Braun meets targets and drives innovation", saying it had continued its long-term growth path. The previous year's report had described continued growth in a demanding environment.

The group's most recent announcement is dated 24 July 2026 and concerns the start of the BASKET BALL coronary trial. Its Swiss company offers a 2026 factsheet and the 2025 annual report. In 2026 the business marks 187 years since its founding in 1839. Availability of individual consumer products such as Prontosan varies by country, and the company refers enquiries to its national representatives.
