Overview
Balade en Provence is a French natural-cosmetics brand based in Opio, a village in the hills behind Cannes in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It makes solid, plastic-free skincare, haircare and body products, handcrafted in France through cold saponification — a soap-making method that works without heat. The company markets itself under the tagline "Cosmétiques solides Français" (French solid cosmetics) and describes itself as a pioneer in solid facial care.
The brand was founded by Alexandre Vidal. Its public timeline is not entirely settled: the company and a French clean-beauty feature both centre on 2018, the year Vidal launched a night balm that he describes as a turning point for the brand [7]. A separate editorial brand page records the company as created in 2015 in Opio [12]. The brand's own account notes that a range of cold-process soaps preceded the 2018 balm, which implies the business was active before that launch.

Origin and founder
Alexandre Vidal came to cosmetics after a corporate career rather than from within the industry. According to a feature in the French clean-beauty magazine Bien ou Bien, he held commercial roles in Paris and Los Angeles and spent around a decade at Church & Dwight Co. — the group that owns the Batiste dry-shampoo brand — where he worked in its export division [8]. Originally from Mende in the Lozère, he later settled in Opio in Provence.
The company's account describes Vidal as drawn to the region's wild landscape, plants and flowers, and says he taught himself the art of cold saponification to make natural cleansers. The brand began with a line of cold-process soaps; the 2018 night balm followed and, by the company's telling, marked the point at which the brand found its direction, helped by positive responses from people with sensitive skin.
Philosophy and positioning
Balade en Provence positions itself around natural, plastic-free formulation. "Avec Balade en Provence, fini le plastique et les ingrédients chimiques" — with the brand, the company says, plastic and chemical ingredients are done away with. It states that its products are of 100% natural origin and are built around short ingredient lists, with a stated maximum of around nine ingredients per product.
Manufacturing is presented as wholly French. The brand says its products are made entirely in France, with the sole exception of an aluminium travel tin [3], summarising the approach as "la qualité en plus, les kilomètres en moins" (more quality, fewer kilometres). Products are made by cold saponification, which the company says preserves the properties of its oils by avoiding heat.
Products
The brand's range spans face, hair and body care, alongside a men's line and accessories. Its bestsellers are a set of solid balms — a night balm, a day balm and an eye-contour balm — together with a solid hydration-boosting serum and an all-in-one bar for men. The company makes a measured performance claim for the night balm, citing a 52.7% gain in hydration of the skin's surface layers one hour after application [2].
Sustainability and certifications
Sustainability is central to how the brand describes itself. It says its products contain no palm oil, no sulfates and no preservatives, and that packaging is plastic-free — using cardboard cases that it describes as 100% compostable and recyclable, printed with vegetable-based ink, and FSC-certified.
The brand carries several third-party certifications. According to its FAQ, its face balms are certified Cosmos Organic by Ecocert, while its face and body soaps are labelled Cosmos Natural [3]; the haircare line was described in editorial coverage as in the process of certification [7]. The company also states that its products are certified vegan by the Vegan Society and are not tested on animals [3].
Recognition
The brand reports a cluster of awards and shortlistings in 2022, mostly in the natural- and "free-from" beauty space. Its men's moisturising face and eye balm won a bronze medal in the "Free From Achievement" category at the Free From Skincare Awards 2022 [5]. Its solid hydrating serum was named a finalist for the Best Sustainable Supplier prize at the Travel Retail Award [6], and was commended at The Beauty Shortlist Eco Awards 2022. The brand was also Highly Commended at the Pure Beauty Global Awards 2022. These awards are announced on the company's own blog, with the awarding bodies as the third-party sources.
The brand has also drawn coverage from French clean-beauty outlets, including Bien ou Bien and the subscription-box curator Biotyfull Box, both of which profile its Opio origins and its handcrafted, certified solid cosmetics.
Current status
The brand is active. It operates a direct-to-consumer e-commerce site with a current catalogue, says it ships worldwide, and is distributed through European natural-cosmetics retailers; it has also expanded into the German market. Its most recent documented milestones are the 2022 award announcements, and it maintains active Instagram and TikTok accounts.
