Summary

Overview

Bali Body is an Australian self-tan, suncare and skincare brand founded in 2014 by the husband-and-wife team David and Laura Oosterloo [1][2]. The company is based in Melbourne, where its products are manufactured, and sells directly to consumers through localised online storefronts as well as selected retailers. According to the company, the idea took shape while the couple was on a career break in Bali, and the range was built around suncare and self-tan products formulated for sensitive and easily irritated skin.

The brand remains active and trades internationally, with products it says are available in more than 150 countries. It is best known for its tanning oils and self-tan formulas, several of which the company markets as bestsellers.

Origin & founders

Bali Body was started by David and Laura Oosterloo, described on the brand's own pages as a young Australian couple who set out to address the lack of a suncare and self-tan range suited to sensitive skin. The company's About and Sustainability pages, along with third-party trade and retail listings, consistently give the founding year as 2014 [4][5]; an earlier date of 2013 has also circulated, but the brand and its public sources date the launch to 2014. In some older write-ups, co-founder Laura Oosterloo appears under her maiden name, Laura Foley.

The line began with tanning oils before broadening into self-tan, suncare and skincare. The brand says all of its products continue to be made in Australia and manufactured in Melbourne.

Philosophy & positioning

Bali Body positions itself around what it calls a "skin-first" approach to self-tanning and suncare, aiming for a natural, sun-kissed glow using naturally derived ingredients suitable for a range of skin types. Its stated mission is to help people "feel confident and glowing" through self-tan, skincare and suncare ranges that "naturally nourish and promote glowing skin." The company uses the tagline "They bottled summer and called it Bali Body."

The trade publication TheIndustry.beauty describes it as "an Australian beauty brand renowned for its natural, vegan-friendly skincare and sun care products" [4].

Products & innovation

The brand's catalogue centres on self-tan and bronzing products, sun protection and a smaller skincare range. Self-tan formats span mousses, lotions, serums, mists and gradual tanners, alongside face-specific and wash-off options. Signature items the company highlights include the Ultra Dark Self Tanning Mousse, the Face Tan Water and tanning oils such as the Watermelon Sunscreen Oil SPF50.

More recent launches include the Sheer Glow Sunscreen Gel SPF50 and the Clear Self Tanning Gel, which the brand promotes on its homepage as a "Viral Bestseller" [3]. According to Cosmetify, the brand's "Instant Tan" product, launched in 2021, generated assets and videos reported to have drawn more than 200 million views worldwide [5].

Recognition & press

Marie Claire featured the brand's Face Tan Water in a roundup of products for a radiant complexion, noting that it "feels and applies just like water, the only difference being you'll develop a noticeable glow within 4-6 hours" [6]. The brand also lists Cosmopolitan, Glamour, ELLE, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar among publications it has appeared in.

Sustainability

Bali Body states that it is 100% cruelty-free with Leaping Bunny approval, and that more than 98% of its products are vegan [2]. The company says the bottles and tubes used for its formulas are recyclable, with its Essentials line packaged in bottles made from recycled and recyclable material. For order fulfilment it reports using cardboard cartons, paper filler and paper labels, with no single-use plastics. The brand also describes manufacturing practices such as waste separation and pH-balancing of grey water before release, and says it has donated more than $400,000 worth of Essentials personal-care products to charities.

Current status

Bali Body is an active, independent brand. It continues to release new products, has expanded into retailers including Selfridges, Boots and Sephora [4], and operates localised storefronts across the EU, UK, US and Australian markets. Trade sources name a current management team led by general manager Tim Akhounov, with Lauren Mand overseeing product development. The company appears to remain founder-connected, with no record of acquisition by an outside owner.
