Overview
Banana Republic is an American clothing and lifestyle brand founded in 1978 in Mill Valley, California [2]. It began as a safari- and expedition-themed apparel retailer and has been owned by Gap Inc. since 1983 [3]. Within the beauty market it is known for a licensed fragrance line that has run since the mid-1990s, sold alongside its apparel in stores and online.
The brand remains active and global. Gap Inc. describes it as a lifestyle label with over 400 company-operated and franchise stores, and its fragrance catalogue is ongoing, with the newest editions dated 2025.

Origin & founders
Banana Republic was started by Mel and Patricia Ziegler, a couple who had worked at the San Francisco Chronicle — Mel as a reporter and Patricia as an illustrator [3]. Gap Inc.'s corporate page credits the founding to "a journalist and illustrator who embodied the pioneering spirit of San Francisco in the 70s," without naming them; the names come from Wikipedia and editorial records.
According to the account on Wikipedia, the Zieglers quit their jobs, moved to the Tamalpais Valley, and after Mel returned from a magazine assignment in Australia with a war-surplus British Burma jacket, the pair bought 500 Spanish Civil War paratrooper shirts and sold them at a flea market in Marin City, California. The early business was built around a hand-drawn catalogue that printed traveller and explorer stories beside the goods, together with safari-themed retail locations.
Ownership
Gap Inc. acquired Banana Republic in 1983 [3], and the brand has operated as part of the company since. Within Gap Inc.'s portfolio it sits alongside Gap, Old Navy and Athleta. The fragrance line is not made in-house: in 2005, Gap Inc. signed a license with Inter Parfums covering personal-care products for both Gap and Banana Republic, an arrangement under which Inter Parfums handled product development, formulation, packaging and manufacturing while Gap managed marketing and sales in its stores [4].
Philosophy & positioning
Banana Republic frames its identity around the phrase "A Spirit of Discovery." The company says it creates "classics with character," working with established mills on premium fabrics and effortless silhouettes meant to move from work to weekend and from the airport to a destination. On sustainability, Gap Inc. states that the brand has "a proud legacy of upcycling" and a commitment to biodiversity and to better product and operating decisions [2].
Products & innovation
The brand's first fragrance was Classic, a unisex scent launched in 1995 and developed by perfumer Jean-Claude Delville [7]. The modern personal-care line followed the 2005 Inter Parfums license, with releases reaching stores from 2006 onward [4]. In 2013, the brand reintroduced its Classic, W and M fragrances with new packaging, distributed at Banana Republic stores across the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, France, Japan and what the company described as 21 additional key markets [6].
In 2017, Banana Republic introduced the Icon Collection, a set of five unisex fragrances numbered for years significant to the brand: 78 Vintage Green, 83 Leather Reserve, 90 Pure White, 06 Black Platinum and 17 Oud Mosaic [8]. Later listings group current scents under Icon and Legacy collections, alongside matching fragrance candles. The fragrance database Parfumo records roughly 54 perfumes under the Banana Republic name, the earliest from 1995 and the newest from 2025, with an average user rating of 7.0 out of 10 [9].
Current status
Banana Republic is an active, global brand. Its fragrance storefront remains in operation, the newest catalogued editions are dated 2025, and Gap Inc. continues to list it as a lifestyle brand with more than 400 stores. Its fragrances continue to be produced under license by Inter Parfums.
