Summary

Overview

Beaufort London is a British niche fragrance house founded by the musician Leo Crabtree. Based in Worcestershire and manufacturing entirely in Britain, it is known for smoke-led, narrative perfumes that draw on the country's naval and elemental history. The company remains active, with new releases and editorial coverage recorded into 2026.

The house takes its name from the Beaufort wind scale, the system for describing weather conditions devised by Rear Admiral Sir Francis Beaufort in 1805 [5]. That maritime framing runs through the brand: its founder has described the appeal of "trying to define something invisible — forces you feel but do not see" [7].

Origin and founders

Beaufort London was founded by Leo Crabtree, who has played drums for the electronic band The Prodigy since 2007 [6]. The brand site dates the founding to 2013, when Crabtree began not with perfume but with a single product — a handmade moustache wax in a billet aluminium case [1]. While experimenting with essential oils for that wax, he concluded that fragrance was where the brand's focus should lie.

Sources differ on the founding year. Beaufort London's own account places the start in 2013 [1], while a profile in Club Oenologique gives 2015 — the year the debut fragrance collection reached the market [6]. The two dates describe different milestones: the moustache-wax origin and the first perfume launch.

The company frames its origins around the sea and the elements; according to the brand, it was "informed by early experiences at sea and a very British obsession with the elements." Crabtree has linked the project to his late father, saying the brand's themes were "aspects of things he'd talked to me about or taught me." For the first fragrances he worked with the British perfumers Julie Marlowe and Julie Dunkley [6].

Philosophy and positioning

Beaufort London builds its identity on the etymology of perfume — the Latin "per fumum", meaning "through smoke" — and on what it calls the many olfactory facets of smoke. The company describes its work as marked by an "uncommon approach to fragrance execution, its utilisation of unusual ingredients in 'overdosed' concentrations and its darkly luxurious aesthetic" [1]. Crabtree has compared the compositions to "creating a huge oil painting with a large brush," using thick, deliberate strokes [7].

The house leans on dark, literary and gothic imagery, and on conceptual notes such as smoke, gunpowder, rum, blood, sea spray and leather. It positions itself toward what one retailer profile called independent thinkers who engage actively with unconventional fragrances rather than passive consumers. The brand's tagline is "Extraordinary British Fragrance".

Products and innovation

The brand's perfumes are organised into themed collections. The debut set, Come Hell or High Water, launched in 2015 and included Tonnerre, Coeur de Noir and Vi et Armis, alongside the extrait Fathom V. The Revenants collection followed in 2017 with Iron Duke, Terror & Magnificence and Rake & Ruin, and Force Majeure arrived in 2024 as a three-fragrance elemental series, later extended with an installment named Sirenide drawing on Orkney selkie mythology.

Individual scents carry the house's deliberately confrontational framing — Vi et Armis has been described as "Narcotic Chaos in A Bottle". The brand markets these as eau de parfum and higher-concentration extraits; a 2026 limited "Director's Cut" edition of Fathom V was promoted at a 50 per cent fragrance concentration, marking ten years of that scent.

Recognition

In 2025, the fragrance Cape Wrath was named a finalist in the Best Independent category at the Art & Olfaction Awards [3]. The house has drawn coverage from fragrance-focused publications including The Perfume Society, which framed its launch as a new British house with a deliberately "dark" aesthetic, and Ministry of Scent.

Sustainability and manufacturing

According to the company, all of its fragrances, soaps and candles are made from fine ingredients and "entirely manufactured in Britain by hand" at its Worcestershire premises. Beaufort London states that it does not, and has not, tested raw materials or finished products on animals, nor asked third parties to do so [4]. It uses both natural and synthetic materials, the latter where a note cannot be distilled naturally or to replace animal-derived ingredients. The brand also maintains a formal sustainability policy covering waste reduction through recycling, efficient resource use and continuous improvement in carbon performance.

Current status

Beaufort London is an active brand. Its most recent recorded activity is a blog post dated March 2026, and the period from 2024 to 2026 saw new collection launches, a 2025 award nomination and expanded retail distribution. The company says its products are sold through curated niche perfumeries, independent boutiques and select department stores across more than 20 countries, with no mass-market or drugstore placement [2]; in 2025 it added the Boots Fragrance Boutique to its UK stockists.
