Summary

Overview

BIC is a French consumer-goods manufacturer headquartered in Clichy, on the northern edge of Paris. It is best known for disposable pens, pocket lighters and razors, and within the beauty and grooming space its relevance rests on that razor line — the BIC Soleil women's range, the BIC Flex shavers and a long history of inexpensive disposable blades. The company applies the same principle across all three of its categories: simple, low-cost everyday products made at scale.

The business is active and publicly listed on Euronext Paris, reporting revenue of 2.090 billion euros for 2025 [3]. Its grooming products sit firmly at the drugstore end of the market, valued for durability and price rather than premium performance [5].

Origin & founders

BIC traces back to Marcel Bich and Édouard Buffard, who set up a manufacturing business near Paris in the mid-1940s, at first making pen holders and pencil cases in a factory at Clichy. Marcel Bich, born in Turin in 1914 and naturalised as a French citizen in 1932, acquired the ballpoint patent originally developed by László Bíró and worked out an industrial process — using watchmaking tools — to mass-produce the tiny stainless-steel balls a ballpoint needs [4]. The result, the BIC Cristal, launched in 1950 and became the company's flagship product.

Sources differ on exactly when the company began. Wikipedia records a founding date of 25 October 1945 [3], while BIC's own corporate history gives 1944 — the year Bich bought the empty Clichy factory [2]. The firm was separately incorporated as a legal entity, Société Bic, in 1953; at that point the "h" was dropped from Bich's surname to avoid mispronunciation in English-speaking markets [3].

History & milestones

From a single pen, BIC expanded methodically into other disposable goods. It moved into pocket lighters, launched commercially in 1973, and then into wet shaving — the company says it was the first to sell a one-piece disposable razor, in 1975 [4]. Razors have remained a core line ever since.

The grooming range grew over the following decades. BIC added the Soleil women's razor line in 2004, launched the five-blade BIC Flex 5 in January 2015, and in 2023 introduced the EasyRinse razor, which the company describes as using a "reverse blade design and patented anti-clog technology" [3]. During the 1980s its shaving products were already a sizeable business in the United States, reported at 52 million dollars in sales and a 22.4 percent market share.

Alongside organic growth, the company expanded through acquisitions, several of them in writing and correction products: the Swedish firm Ballograf in 1959, Wite-Out in 1992, and the Tipp-Ex brand together with Sheaffer in 1997 [3].

Products & innovation

Within beauty, BIC's offering is its shaving range rather than cosmetics. The women's BIC Soleil disposables are built around three blades that flex to the contours of the skin, paired with a lubricating strip the brand enriches with aloe vera and vitamin E to ease the razor's glide, marketed as suitable for sensitive skin [6]. The wider line spans men's and unisex shavers sold in the Nordic market as BIC Click Soleil, BIC Hybrid Flex and BIC Flex.

The brand's most recent grooming innovation is the EasyRinse razor of 2023, whose reverse-blade construction is designed to stop hair and shaving cream clogging between the blades. Across its categories BIC frames itself as a maker of "high-quality, safe, affordable, essential products," and in 2020 it set out a five-year sustainability programme it calls the Horizon Plan [2].

Recognition

In its 2025 "Best Women's Razors" guide, the review site TechGearLab placed the BIC Soleil seventh, in a "Durable and Comfortable" slot rather than among its top-rated picks [5]. The handle drew praise for being comfortable and hard-wearing and the included blade case made it convenient for travel; reviewers were more critical of the square, non-hinging head, which they found less effective in tight corners and less close than reusable razors.

Current status

BIC remains an active, global business. Société BIC is listed on Euronext Paris, and its regional websites, including the Swedish-language EU portal, were current as of 2026 and marked the company's 70 years of pen-making [1]. Sources differ on its leadership: BIC's corporate site states that Rob Versloot became chief executive in 2025 [2], while the Wikipedia infobox still lists Gonzalve Bich in that role [3].
