Summary

Overview

Bigelius Skincare is a Swedish skincare company founded in 2017 by Henrik Bigelius and based in Stockholm [9]. It describes itself as a Scandinavian unisex concept, developed and produced in Sweden, built around a deliberately small range of multipurpose products. Its defining feature is an anti-pollution focus: the company includes a patented ingredient called Pollustop in every product, intended to shield the skin from environmental damage.

The brand grew out of a personal problem. While living in Beijing, where he worked as a management consultant and trade promoter for Business Sweden, the founder developed rashes and acne that a dermatologist attributed to poor air quality [8]. Unable to find skincare designed to protect against pollution, he returned to Sweden and spent about a year developing a line to address it.

Origin and founders

The company traces its beginnings to 2015, when Henrik Bigelius moved to Beijing and first encountered the skin problems that inspired the concept. The idea took commercial form on his return to Sweden, and the business was founded in 2017. Sources differ slightly on how to date the brand: the company's own account spans 2015 to 2017, treating the Beijing period as the concept's inception, while the editorial profile that records the founding gives 2017 [2][9]. The 2015 date refers to the idea's origin; 2017 marks the founding of the company in Sweden.

According to the brand, the founder's motivation was partly personal conviction about what skin can do for confidence and energy, and partly frustration that existing products rarely satisfied effectiveness, simplicity, appearance and scent at the same time.

History and milestones

Bigelius Skincare launched its first products in 2018, beginning with a men's collection sold in Scandinavia and Asia [2]. In the autumn of 2020 it introduced a unisex collection worldwide.

In September 2022 the company appeared on Draknästet, the Swedish version of Dragon's Den, where it secured equal investments from Lena Apler and Sara Wimmercranz [10]. The founder has also been covered in Swedish business media for raising more capital than he had originally sought [11].

Philosophy and positioning

The company's positioning rests on simplicity. It argues that skincare "should be effortless, uncomplicated and for everyone," favouring a "less is more" approach in which a limited range of effective, multipurpose products replaces a long routine [8]. Bigelius frames its products as accessible regardless of gender or background, and presents three pillars: being uncomplicated, the sensory experience of use, and anti-pollution protection.

The sensory element is part of the pitch. The brand scents its products with bergamot and cedarwood, which it describes as evoking a Nordic forest and turning a bathroom into a calmer space. Alongside its skincare, the company states its purpose as serving as "an enabler for self-improvement," helping people look and feel better while challenging conventional ideas about skincare over time.

Products and innovation

The range centres on the face and includes a cleanser, toner, facial mist, serum, eye cream and moisturising creams, sold individually and in kits. There is also a men's collection and a hand-and-body line. Separately, the company runs a corporate-solutions arm that produces customised scented products — hand wash, sanitiser, lotion, candles and room sprays — for business clients, manufactured locally in Stockholm.

The brand's signature is Pollustop, which it presents as a patented anti-pollution ingredient included in all its products [4]. The company describes it as "an anionic polysaccharide of high molecular weight, obtained by biotechnology" that forms a "breathing" film on the skin, said to slow the penetration of pollutants while allowing the skin to function normally [4]. It frames the ingredient as a barrier against three kinds of pollution stress — atmospheric particles, UV exposure and domestic chemicals — and, in one interview, claims to be "the world's only brand having anti-pollution ingredients in all products" [8]. The anti-pollution page cites a skincare formulator, Collette Haydon, on how surface pollutants can generate free radicals, but references research on toxic air without providing specific studies or trial data.

Other listed actives include hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, tripeptide, sodium PCA and silica, addressing hydration, barrier function and ageing, alongside botanical extracts such as turmeric root, cinnamon bark and ginger. The company says all its products are vegan and produced in Sweden, and that they were developed with a team of experienced dermatologists [6]. No third-party certifications are cited in the available material.

Current status

Bigelius Skincare remains active. It operates a live direct-to-consumer site with international shipping across the EU and UK, and its products have appeared at several Nordic retailers. Its most recent clearly dated public event is the 2022 Draknästet investment [10]; ongoing retail listings indicate continued trading since.
