Summary

Overview

Bijan is an American luxury fashion and fragrance house founded in 1976 by the Iranian-born designer Bijan Pakzad, who opened a by-appointment-only showroom on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills [2]. Built around menswear, perfume and jewelry, the house became known for an exclusivity model in which clothing was, in the words of its current leadership, "never on sale," and the boutique was repeatedly billed in press coverage as the most expensive store in the world. Its beauty-relevant output is fragrance, the line for which Bijan won several industry awards in the 1980s and 1990s.

The house remains in operation. Its founder died in 2011, and the business is now led by his son, Nicolas Bijan, who has continued the brand from Beverly Hills and a location at the Wynn in Las Vegas [7].

Origin and founders

Bijan Pakzad was born in Tehran in 1940 and settled in Los Angeles, where in 1976 he opened the Rodeo Drive showroom that gives the house its name [6]. The brand credits that opening with helping to establish Rodeo Drive's reputation as a luxury shopping destination. From the outset the business was organised around scarcity and personal service: the Beverly Hills location operated by appointment only, and the company describes its founding values as "the world's finest materials," Italian craftsmanship and "one-of-a-kind designs."

Pakzad summarised his approach in a frequently repeated personal statement: "The world said conform, the world said settle for less, the world said compromise and no one will know… So, I made my own world." The house's stated tagline is "Exquisite craftsmanship for gentlemen of taste."

History and milestones

After establishing the Rodeo Drive showroom, the house moved into fragrance. According to its own history page, Bijan launched its first men's fragrance in 1979, presented in a Baccarat crystal bottle designed by Pakzad [2]. Other references date the fragrance differently: the fragrance database Fragrantica states that the first men's scent appeared in 1981 in individually numbered and signed Baccarat bottles, and elsewhere that the first Bijan fragrances for men and women launched in 1987 [8]. The house itself separately notes that by 1987 its men's and women's fragrances had become the best-selling scents in the United States.

A flagship New York store on Fifth Avenue followed in 1982 after a two-year construction. Through the 1980s and 1990s the brand leaned heavily on celebrity and advertising tie-ins, including a 1996 fragrance created with the basketball player Michael Jordan. The City of Beverly Hills proclaimed May 8th "Bijan Day" in 2012. More recently the house opened a location at the Wynn Las Vegas in 2018 and has produced a series of limited-edition automobile collaborations, including a Ferrari SF90 Spider project in 2024.

Ownership

Bijan is privately held; no parent company is recorded in the available sources. Leadership passed within the founding family after Bijan Pakzad's death in 2011, with his son Nicolas Bijan taking over the business [7].

One transaction is frequently misread as a change of ownership. In August 2016 the Rodeo Drive boutique building was sold to LVMH for 122 million US dollars, after which the store relocated across the street in 2020 [6]. This was a real-estate sale of the premises, not an acquisition of the Bijan brand, which remains independent.

Philosophy and positioning

The house positions itself at the top of the luxury market and frames its identity around exclusivity, hand-craftsmanship and rarity rather than wide availability. Nicolas Bijan has described the retail philosophy in terms of presentation and restraint, saying clothing "must be presented in a very delicate manner like a piece of jewelry almost. It's never on sale" [7]. Production is partly based in Italy: the company has said it employs around 30 staff in Beverly Hills and 25 workers at a Tuscan factory it owns. Distribution is direct, centred on its own appointment-based and resort locations rather than third-party retail.

Products and innovation

Bijan's fragrance line is anchored by the Bijan Classic Fragrance for Men, which the company describes as a blend of 98 essences including exotic citrus, patchouli, sandalwood, musk and amber. The current range also includes the Bijan Classic Fragrance for Women and the Bijan Nude Fragrance for Women. The early bottles became a recognisable element of the brand: Fragrantica and Wikipedia both note their distinctive rounded form, described as a circular glass flacon with an open centre.

Recognition

Bijan's fragrances were recognised at the FiFi Awards, the perfume industry's main honours. Wikipedia records the brand winning Most Successful Men's Fragrance and Best Women's Fragrance Package at the 1988 ceremony, and two further FiFi awards in 1997 for Men's Fragrance Star of the Year and Best National Advertising Campaign [6]. Fragrantica frames the same men's honour as the award "for 1987 Men's fragrance of the year," reflecting that FiFi awards are presented the year after the qualifying period [9].

Beyond awards, the brand's reach has been noted in the press. By 1985 it claimed 15,000 customers, "including four kings and sixteen presidents," and in 2001 the Los Angeles Times reported the Bijan perfume and fashion business generating an estimated 3.2 billion US dollars in sales worldwide [6]. One of the Bijan perfume bottles is held in the permanent collection of the Smithsonian Institution [6]. Trade coverage by WWD has documented the next generation's expansion plans, with Nicolas Bijan projecting that five store locations would generate 250 million US dollars in revenue at a one-billion-dollar valuation [7].

Current status

The house is active. Its most recent documented activity is the 2024 Ferrari SF90 Spider collaboration, alongside fragrances offered for sale and operating retail locations on Rodeo Drive and at the Wynn Las Vegas [2]. Editorial coverage describes ongoing expansion under family ownership, with stated ambitions to open further international stores.
