Overview
Bioderma is a French dermocosmetic skincare brand founded in 1977 in Aix-en-Provence by the pharmacist-biologist Jean-Noël Thorel [9]. It belongs to NAOS, the privately held French company that also owns Institut Esthederm and Etat Pur [7]. The brand is built around an approach it calls Ecobiology, which treats the skin as a living ecosystem, and it is sold mainly through pharmacies in more than 130 countries.
Bioderma is best known for Sensibio H2O, a micellar water it describes as the first ever sold, and which remains its defining product. The wider NAOS group operates in roughly 130 countries with about 3,500 employees and 80 patent families.
Origin and founders
Bioderma traces its beginnings to Jean-Noël Thorel, a pharmacist-biologist who had worked in pharmacy and then as a director in the pharmaceutical industry. According to NAOS, he founded the company in May 1977 with minimal capital — around 2,000 francs, roughly 300 euros — starting from a warehouse in Rungis, near Paris. He created the first Bioderma products together with a research centre named CEREDAP.
From the outset Thorel held an unusual view of skin, regarding it, in the company's words, as "a living ecosystem that continuously interacts with its internal and external environment." NAOS describes this perspective as a deliberate break with the cosmetics conventions of the time. The founder's outlook was, the company says, shaped partly by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's The Little Prince; the NAOS name itself refers to a star in the Puppis constellation, echoing that influence.
Ownership
Bioderma is one of three brands owned by NAOS, alongside Institut Esthederm — established in 1978 — and Etat Pur [7]. In 2016 the three were merged into a single unified company under the NAOS name [3].
In 2018, Thorel donated his shares to the Jean-Noël Thorel Foundation, creating a structure in which, as NAOS puts it, "profits are reinvested in the company or used to fund health and human development projects" [7]. The company states that in 2024 NAOS became an organisation with an altruistic purpose [3]. NAOS remains privately held.
Philosophy and positioning
The brand's guiding concept is Ecobiology, which NAOS defines as "considering the skin as a living ecosystem and working with its biology to address the root causes of its imbalances, rather than just treating the visible signs." In practice the company frames this as helping skin defend and regulate itself by reactivating its own biological mechanisms, rather than over-treating it or masking symptoms. The brand holds that healthy skin reflects a biological balance between cells and their surroundings, and it emphasises protecting the skin's microbiome — the millions of bacteria living on the surface that, in its account, keep skin balanced.
Bioderma positions itself as dermatologist-developed and clinically tested. The company says it works with more than 150,000 healthcare professionals worldwide — including dermatologists, paediatricians and pharmacists — and presents its products as offering "clinically proven biological efficacy." Its stated mission, expressed on the Swedish site, is that through Ecobiology "no one should have to suffer because of skin conditions." Products are organised into named lines aimed at particular skin concerns, among them Sensibio for sensitive, redness-prone skin, Hydrabio for dehydrated skin and Sébium for oily, blemish-prone skin.
Products and innovation
Bioderma's signature product is Sensibio H2O, a micellar water. The company states that "in 1995, Laboratoire BIODERMA created the first micellar water ever to be sold in the world" [11], and reports that one bottle of Sensibio H2O is now sold every second somewhere in the world [11]. The date of the underlying invention is recorded inconsistently across sources: NAOS and Bioderma place the launch in 1995 [3], while the editorial outlet Beautytap states that "in 1991, Bioderma researchers developed the method to create a cleansing water" [10] — a difference that may reflect early research versus commercial launch. Micellar waters work through surfactants that form microscopic spheres called micelles; Bioderma says its formula uses a single mild, non-ionic surfactant, a glycerol ester whose structure is modelled on lipids already present in the skin [11].
Beyond Sensibio, NAOS lists Atoderm Shower Oil, Hydrabio Hyalu+ Serum and Sébium Kerato+ among the brand's signature products. Its product range spans cleansing, skincare, sun care and baby products, organised into lines such as Atoderm, Cicabio, Hydrabio, Nodé, Photoderm, Sensibio and Sébium.
The brand's research rests on the proprietary Ecobiology approach and a related framework it calls NAOS Aging Science. The company reports more than 70 patents tied to its innovations, and the wider NAOS group cites 80 patent families. In 2001 the company opened its first specialised biometrology laboratory for skincare research and development, in Lyon [9]. Bioderma also names research collaborations with the French public institutes INSERM and CNRS and with MedILS, the Mediterranean Institute for Life Sciences. The company describes Sensibio H2O as "the top-ranked cleansing product amongst those prescribed by dermatologists."
Recognition
Sensibio H2O has a long-standing reputation as a French-pharmacy staple. In a 2020 feature, Beautytap wrote that "Hollywood celebrities and makeup artists have been raving about the Bioderma Sensibio H2O micellar water for decades," and noted that it "used to be the number one souvenir to bring back from Paris" [10]. The same publication called the product "the OG of all micellar cleansers." Wikipedia lists Bioderma among well-known cosmetic brands produced in France, alongside Vichy and L'Oréal [9].
Current status
Bioderma is active and operates globally. It is sold in more than 130 countries through pharmacies, maintains localised national sites such as bioderma.se and runs current social-media channels. Its most recent corporate milestone, according to NAOS, is the company's 2024 shift to an organisation with an altruistic purpose [3]. NAOS reported revenue of 261.5 million euros for 2014 in the figures cited by Wikipedia.
